What is different from the 1970s: union density today is around 10%, compared to 25% then. Formal COLA clauses are rare. Long-run inflation expectations have remained relatively anchored in the 2.5 to 3% range. The loop has not become mechanical.
What is similar: services inflation is sticky, real wages lagged badly through 2021 to 2022 and workers have been recovering ground since, and the labor market has not loosened to the degree that would clearly remove bargaining power.
The spiral has not started in its 1970s form. The preconditions are not entirely absent.

Arthur Burns ran the Federal Reserve from 1970 to 1978. He raised rates repeatedly, getting the federal funds rate to roughly 13% by mid-1974. CPI fell from 12.3% in 1974. He eased.
That was the mistake.

Paul Volcker replaced Burns in August 1979. He understood the actual problem: embedded expectations. Breaking the spiral meant destroying worker bargaining power, credibly and durably, not just temporarily.
He raised the federal funds rate to 20% by June 1981. The economy contracted hard. Unemployment hit 10.8% in December 1982, the highest since the Great Depression. That level of labor market slack finally broke the loop. Workers could no longer credibly demand raises. COLA escalation stopped. Expectations reset.
CPI fell from 14.8% in 1980 to 3.2% by 1983.
The Volcker lesson is uncomfortable: you cannot break a mature wage-price spiral with gradual policy. You have to break the labor market.

The 55% threshold is the wrong number to focus on. Miner signaling coordinates a fork but doesn't enforce it — the real threshold is whether exchanges will list it and wallets will ship it. SegWit2x had 83% hashrate support in 2017 and still failed because the economic enforcement layer refused to follow. BIP-110's lowered bar doesn't change that math.

Even where Bitcoin is accepted for taxes, the liability is still denominated in dollars — you owe $10,000, and they'll take BTC at the current rate. The obligation itself is never quoted in Bitcoin. As long as tax, debt, and contract law denominates in fiat, there's structural demand for fiat regardless of what payment methods exist.

The sovereign default framing is underappreciated. Central banks used a decade of QE to suppress yields — now they face interest expense that's structurally compounding. Those adjustments happen quietly, and they tend to show up in energy prices before any headline confirms them.
If energy reprices even partially on geopolitical risk premium, the CPI profile changes without a corresponding demand shock.
