Droppie, my completely ordinary two years experiment found that there was no possible scenario that made private health insurance a 'win'. Even adding a price for 'peace of mind' does not balance the book.
Insurance companies employ people to make sure the odds are strongly, permanently, consistently in their favour. Us mug punters? We have neither the information nor the skills to beat them at this game.
(Don't even get me started on their grasping desire to get their hands on DNA info. Ick.)
They are as immoral as the tobacco, hydrocarbon and gambling companies. Profiting from fear? A filthy business.

The letter I wrote to my MP just yesterday:
Subject: Moral and ethical objection to the Tax Act encouragement of private health insurance.
Dear <snip>,
Many years ago, we endured the nightmare years of the Howard Government.
In order to funnel money to their rent-seeker friends, they imposed a private health insurance 'surcharge' on our taxes.
To add a lie on top of the steal, they called it the "Medicare levy surcharge"
It encourages people to take out private health insurance, a scam product with no possible benefits to the buyer.
I am over-the-moon happy to pay for Medicare, a real insurance product, with real benefits to the buyer (and to everyone else in the community).
More of that please. Raise the Medicare levy by all means.
I have just paid my 'surcharge'. I cannot record my moral and ethical objection to private health insurance, and the Government's active encouragement of it on my tax return, so I am asking you to it on my behalf:
Please,
1. Use parliament to say "private health insurance, turning a profit from people's fears, is unethical. The cost of private health insurance far exceeds the benefits; both to the individual and to the community"
2. Rename and/or remove this unethical element from the Tax Act
3. Remove government subsidies of private health insurance, and
4. Put all the money into Medicare, where it belongs

My grandmother's arthritis medication came in a plastic bottle with a 'child'-proof cap that required her to grab forcefully, squeeze and twist.
When people put the "It is more likely a mistake than an intention to harm you" thing to me, I always remember my grandmothers arthritis medication.

I'm not sure it is a problem. I needed an easy way in. I had to scratch the 'gah, no more twitter' itch, not analyse the breadth of options.
Once in, and comfortable, then the rest of the fediwhatsit opened up.
I think mastodon.social is an important thing for the same reasons. 'Start Here' clearly marked. Then wander off into the hills.
