what I've found interesting about the press coverage, even from less right-wing outlets, is how poor the analysis is and how little info journalists have about GPEW.
The FT thinks GPEW policies have changed because it's now full of ex-Labour supporters. Wrong, policies are the same.
Ros Taylor on 'oh God What Now' had a racist take, saying it's "clever" for a white working class candidate to speak to that group, but "sectarian" for Muslim Greens to address Muslim voters.

we have to give up this idea, because as long as we hold it then making money - anything that makes money - will always be seen as virtuous. Society did not always believe this. We have to accept again that making money is not an a priori good.

I think there’s a deeper cultural assumption that needs challenging, which is that paid labour is related to a person’s worth. Until we let that go of the idea that paid work is good and not doing it is bad, these issues will remain difficult for us to address.

yeah, not always room for subtlety in these convos on social media.
But I'll try - I think the problem isn't actually growth itself. Ideally some sectors would grow a bit (healthcare, adult social care, education). The problem is the denial of observable reality. We can't keep extracting, making and trashing as a means to the end of allocating basic necessities. But our governments will not recognise this, and refuse to focus directly on resource allocation/ needs meeting

I’m reading Graham Greene for the first time and I’m hooked.
The Ministry of Fear is set in WWII and the observation of people carrying on their everyday lives in the middle of the blitz is so rich and subtle.

yeah, difficult to know what to say about the situation in the US anymore. They have completely accepted the idea that breaking down your own society and bonds of community is somehow desirable and even heroic. Until a critical mass can overturn this way of thinking, they are fucked.

ok, but it's not really an individual problem is it? The ability to address a potentially life-threatening problem as an individual is... just not available to most people as individuals. You need infrastructure and services and institutions and other people.
What I'm doing about these things, to help myself, is working with other people to build community, institutions and resilience etc.

Proof if any were needed that Moleskine is using cheaper paper and the notebook quality is worse. Unusable really.
Pages from cahier notebooks circa 2017 and 2024. Lots of bleeding and irregular textures on the newer paper.
I’ll never buy another Moleskine. I’m currently enjoying a Midori MD plain.

I feel your pain.
My old mac had python preinstalled, but to use python you had to install a newer version. So typing 'python' in the command line would start python and 'python --version' would give you a version.
But the newer macs don't have python preinstalled, so to use it you have to install python and then, for whatever reason, call 'python3' in the command line, not just 'python' which doesn't work. so '3' was the magic number I was missing

Yesterday's government announcement that AI is going to fix potholes continues to live rent-free in the rage room of my head.
I don't have words to describe how stupid this is.
Council workers with shovels fix potholes. And since the government continues to fail to fund councils, they are sacking the workers who do this job.
There just aren't the words, faces or palms enough to deal with the asininity.

Some time ago I worked on a pilot research project about AI, which started with a bunch of user interviews learning about how they used technology and what they might want from an autonomous AI agent
The project went nowhere because the users didn't want an autonomous AI agent making decisions for them
The engineers kept asking for "the data" so they could use AI to "model a solution"
Which rather missed the point of what the data uncovered

Meh.
The idea at the core of this is that you have to keep demolishing and rebuilding things, instead of making them to last in the first place.
What should the lifespan of a building be? 1 year? 10? 100? 1000? How does this 'material passport' need to last and be interpreted? How long until a database becomes 'legacy' code that's difficult to access?
The reality is that people re-used building materials for millennia using human skill instead of silly digital tech
