Maybe a blog post could be in order soon? I feel that semi-frequent progress blog posts are a good alternative to roadmaps, since they keep people on a project’s pulse without the devs needing to commit to timelines. It’s been about 8 months since any public-facing updates to the project, so it’d be nice to see how it’s been coming along in that time!

Old school Sesame Street is up there with Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood in terms of absolutely stellar programming for kids. Now, being Gen Z, I never had the experience of watching them growing up, but the timelessness they have in teaching children both how to respect others and they DESERVE respect from others is superb. And then there’s their educational value!
It’s crazy how publicly-funded and democratically-supported entertainment can actually HELP raise kids.

Oh, I don’t mean to dictate what someone’s priorities ought or ought not to be; you’re right, that’s their prerogative. But Daniel’s established that his priority is to support the Fediverse by building strong platforms for it; vision dissonance takes time away from working on the software that thousands of Fedizens now depend on, which runs in contradiction to his OWN priorities. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Frankly, I have no issue with Dansup starting a lot of projects, especially when they’re thematically interrelated. I have an issue with him starting them alone. There’s been no word about organized teams and collective maintainers being deployed to any of his numerous projects, such that he could take on the role of “vision lead” while well-capable programmers support the groundwork he’s laid. Delegation needs to happen when you scale this fast.

While true, allowing yourself to neglect projects that you’ve built in the past and are still not complete (because FOSS projects never are…) AFTER they’ve had time to become a part of users’ social infrastructure is a massive exercise in shirked responsibility. And lending a hand becomes less tenable when the maintainer who will ACCEPT those lended hands is spreading himself thin across multiple projects; one man can only approve so many PRs.

You’re building way too many things at once… Loops only just hit the public, and then you were supposedly working on Sup, and now you’re doing something else? Like the passion is awesome but this feels like an infrastructural level of feature creep. Every project you (and anyone) have always has points of improvements, especially with only one primary developer, and you’re just chasing the next shiny thing. This isn’t focus or growth, this is a lack of clear goals.

Since it’s a little less corpo-coded, maybe there’d be better luck avoiding imposters and other such unsavory actors

Would you be able to add alt texts to your images? 🙏 Even if it's just simple design stuff like this, alt text doesn't need to "describe" the image to a visually impaired user as much as it needs to communicate its information in a non-visual way. So for this one, you could just have the alt text be "Releasing Spout2 on Linux," and that would be good by the AFB's standards!

Truth be told, I’ve never heard of Wise until this very moment, and I wouldn’t be surprised if many others haven’t either. But really the reason I ask is because, for many, these are very recognizable channels through which supporting a project “just makes sense.” When onboarding friction is lower, more people usually donate because they can just use a familiar system. I only asked because I felt having those might lead to more donos, rather than personal need!

Has their been any news on this? While verification doesn’t affect Accrescent’s typical operations, there hasn’t been much word from the project, and the newest commit in the repo seems to be from 2 months ago.

I think this is just a product of its demographic. The people who come to Mastodon, from what I’ve observed, are largely left-leaning, tech-oriented (or tech-critical) millennials, maybe next would be Gen Xers, and then last would be older Gen Z folk like myself. So the “old social media” sensibilities are reignited.
When Fedi becomes viable social media for the mainstream, I worry that stuff might be harder to find and experience.

Ahhh, and that answers my other question of how it had been getting done in the past, since I’ve caught eye of your streams since ages ago and—from a viewer’s perspective—it looked like everything was just fine. The more you know!
Are there plans to “upstream” this work? Not really sure where it would get put, like in Proton/Wine vs PipeWire, but I figure this is work that many might benefit from.

Are any visual/UX refreshes coming to iOS as well? 👀 One of the biggest feature mismatches currently between CoMaps and Organic is the overall routing workflow, which is still very unintuitive on CoMaps (I can’t immediately change the route endpoints for example, and the various route settings aren’t in one place, like in Organic and proprietary competitors). It’s actually a place where y’all can supersede Organic, which I think is also still complex (Route to/Route from v Change Stop).

Is this in response to a particular project/announcement? I could interpret it as a suggestion that projects like Servo or Ladybird might be dead in the water, as they're trying to reinvent all the browser wheels from scratch, and it would be pretty topical seeing the recent AI comments Firefox has made. I could totally be reading into what is otherwise a general "reality check" style of post!

Thankfully, a lot of people in the comments have suggested walking or biking as potential options. So at the very least, people are aware there could (or SHOULD) be other alternatives.
Whether those alternatives are tenable in OOP’s city, now, is a different matter entirely. Especially since “there’s a sidewalk” is NOT always synonymous with “it’s walkable,” much less “there are myriad alternative transport options.”
Why the apt. complex complaint though?

I’d love to adopt Krita, since it’s a piece of software that already almost exists in the mainstream, but still has the unfortunate reputation of being buggy/cluttered; however, I’m not seeing it in the list of apps. Will some of the money from the fundraiser be given to Krita to help the maintainers polish it up some next year? They don’t get much in monthly donations, but I also don’t see them self-advertising that much like what KDE proper does.

Do you know if any of that money might be spent on hiring some contracted UX/UI designers? From the sounds of the usual blogs, it seems that the developers also play the role of designer most of the time, and having a dedicated (if perhaps small) team of people who’s sole responsibility it is to design clean, uncluttered interfaces for the KDE suite might be just what KDE needs to reach that “inflection point,” I feel.

Constant wizards and configuration pop-ups tend to make applications significantly less enjoyable for the average user. The layperson doesn’t want to have to make a new decision every time they follow someone, they just want to click the button and have it work. It’s why a lot of FOSS project with lots of configuration are reliably described as “cluttered,” “busy,” and “overwhelming” by the general public.

That’s unfortunate, and feels a little counterproductive. As for the “source” of the donation, I’m not sure KDE tracks those either, but the perception of success was largely brought on from seeing an unprecedented spike in user donations right about the time of the nag. Yes, correlation is not causation, but Occam’s razor may apply!

For someone who maybe understands Mastodon better than I do, is there a reason for the checkered outline on the GIF attachment, despite there being ALT text on it? I always thought the checkered outline was to mark an picture without ALT text from a different instance.
