I'm trying to add #phanpy as an app on my android phone, RedMi brand, so I tap on the vivaldi icon, tap on "Add page to" and the option that comes is "Home screen." I tap on that and it says Installing, but then, nothing happens. The shortcut doesn't appear on the home screen. Same story with firefox. A fork of firefox, Iron Wolf, woked, but it was unstable. Now I'm forced to use chrome. Any ideas?

Last night at a film festival in Kampala the audience was treated to my film, The Night Dancer, and it was the first public screening in Uganda, where everyone knows stories of this type of character, but glad they enjoyed it. They laughed heartily, and they said they were scared and laughing at the same time. Which was a good thing.

Sunset at midnight? Some parts of this planet are in a fantasy world. I always get disoriented in Europe when it's not yet 5pm but the sun has set and it's very dark, so I can't imagine how my body will respond to a midnight sunset.

He got interested after I made a presentation about what works for me as an African artist, having left corporate social media. I thought it was the other way round? That having your own site gives you control?
The plugins I cite work in the background and aren't visible and I don't think they verify what a person sells - like the WP eStore Plugin, you can't know if a site uses it especially if, like me, it has customised the "add to cart" button or the shopping cart page (I didn't bother to change much).
But I had not thought of age verification so can't say if they are an option in that regard.

Thanks for these. It is a partition in the drive that has the file system. On my laptop I successfully renamed it, but that was years back. On this Workstation I had renamed it but somewhere along the road the name changed to this machine-type.
The names of the drives are something like "Work" "Stock Videos" etc, a bit like folders, and so they appear in various programs which makes it easy for me to find files. I have like 10 drives.

Good question. I find it useful for some tedious work like creating sub-titles, some vfx tasks (I use offline models that run on my PC rather than on cloud). It has some good and practical uses, but it has stirred a lot of mistrust. Perhaps after this toxic hype goes away and the dust settles, and if we get tools that run on local devices rather than environmentally unfriendly Clouds, well, people would adopt them more widely, and contribute data freely.

In that case, I think writing subjective alt text would be a solution for those who fear it trains AI. Something like, "I took this pretty flower near sunset, there's a bird in the background spoiling my perfect view of the sunset and the flower is..." I like writing my alt text like that, not thinking of AI but because I suck at describing images accurately and so put in my feelings, which I suspect would be worthless to AI?

The problem with online reviews nowadays, because I think most of them do it for affiliate marketing or influencing or something, is they never tell you stuff like this until you get the mic. Last night I finished watching The Eternaut, a great piece of scifi from Argentina, and was pleased that the main characters were older people. It's a riveting show, so don't start it if you have work! But I was frustrated that it ends with a cliffhanger, with a lot of unanswered questions. We are supposed to wait for Season 2 to know what happens next. Eish. I then learn it's based on a comic book, so well, I'll read it to know what happens next.

Does anyone else have songs from artists who perhaps never made it beyond a handful of fans? I have some songs I treasure, got the CDs from the musicians or friends over 10yrs ago, but they've dropped out of the radar and I can't find them anywhere. Just their voice haunting my speakers like a sweet ghost. There's also an mp3 I got off a yahoo group, around 2005. I like the song, but it has no artist name, no title, just a voice and a guitar, perhaps home recorded.

Question on #copyright I intend to publish a public domain book, Myths and Legends of the Bantu. I think it's an important documentation of our cultures, but it has problematic and racist content. So my goal is to strip it of racism, fix some factual errors, etc. I can't claim authorship, original author has moral rights to that. I'll only claim editorship. But 1) Can I legally register a copyright to this edition? 2) Is this whitewashing the author of her racism?

I'm not stressed, and bed is largely comfortable. I just have bad sleep modes. I always find it difficult to fall asleep, regardless of the circumstance, but it looks like it has its seasons because sometimes I sleep long hours. I have taken to reading before sleep these days, or playing music, and it helps me drift off, but once I awake I can go back.

#AI hallucination in #wikipedia is disheartening. This topped a search result (startpage). I at once knew it is false for I've never heard of "Basimba community". It mixes it up with an actual people, the Ngo (leopard) clan of Buganda. Proof of hallucination? It claims to be a Ugandan community but mentions places in Angola, and Portuguese (who never came anywhere close). I've seen other wiki articles of this thing, and also in grok vomit.

Long shot, but hopefully I get results. In the early 2000s, I read a Ugandan newspaper article about two Indian scientists trying to genetically engineer the anopheles mosquito. That set off alarm bells so I wrote a short story, which some universities in UK and Kenya teach in a course Applied African Science Fiction. I've looked for that article but can't find it. I guess it must have been via Reuters or AP or such a newswire.

Finally got a pic of this fella. It comes every morning to my window, 7am-ish, while I still sleep, to play with its reflection. Its beak taps the glass so loudly that I jump awake, really mad. Its wings flutter and beat like a Hitchcockian demon. The first week it happened I'd think someone was at my door and check, only to find nothing, making me furious. It comes on very sunny days to ruin my sleep but today is different for we had a rainy dawn. I should get a cat to eat it.

That I think will be the beauty of federation if it takes root everywhere. Right now to block any corporate social media you have a handful of targets, but the fedi gives thousands of targets, potentially millions, making it more difficult to block.
But I wonder if fedi will ever deliver the kind of political change that corp social media gave its users, hence why dictators fear it, since fedi discourages viral activity and influencing, so it might never pose a political threat.

So in #Uganda they have found a way to deny internet access if you use vpn? I used to imagine VPN's actually hide you from such things. They banned all social media (but I guess the fediverse is not on their crosshairs either because they don't know about it, or its not ban-able due to the numerous sites? So we've been using VPN but now if you have vpn running you don't get any access. This is frightening.

I haven't used Windows since around May last year and I don't want to go back, but a little frustrated with HDR creation options in Mint. I used Insta360 x5 to take the images, but Darktable doesn't recorgnize .dng as RAW, while the appimage of Raw Therapee isn't responding. Gimp is asking for plugins for these two and I can't figure it out. I've tried Luminace HDR, Photomatix, Hugin, Affinity won't install on Wine... Anything I can try? Or how do you make HDRs in Linux?

The process is daunting, though, one reason I couldn't get on Linux earlier until I discovered LM. It's like I'm downloading and learning a new program every other week (sometimes to just test them) since VFX requires working with very many tools, and I can't imagine doing this every time I come upon a new thing to check out.

When I was in Nepal, they advised me not to drink the tap water because I was not a local and but at the end of two years I was drinking it (boil first!)
Here we also have a huge bottled water industry and they might be behind the rumours that you need to boil your water. So perhaps, if some locals consider it safe then perhaps the bottled water corps might be spinning a narrative?

My monthly water bill is around 15000 UGX which is about 4 USD ($1 = about 3,500/-) and the water is clean enough to drink, though we are advised to boil any water before drinking.

This person blocked me after I pointed out that their post is a misrepresentation, and it makes them look suspicious. From their own words, they don't know these children. They stereotyped them, which is typical of NGOs selling poverty porn for donations. Why not use images of people they actually support (I don't see any person on their accounts) with consent, or consent from their guardians?

Fedi hive mind, I'm writing a story. The MC investigates a Luo folk song (re: oral history, Uganda/South Sudan) that has clues saying 500 yrs ago an astronomer from China visited and documented Luo space travel technologies (portals to the stars). This knowledge is now lost and my MC has to unravel the clues, but what clues could point to China without usung racist stereotypes? Perhaps a word, a name, a description, something?

It's the season when pressures mounts to socialize with family. To my neighbours, since I live alone with no plans to "travel to the village" to be with family, I appear to be a very weird creature.
Anyway, I'm looking for comedies and horror films/TV series to binge on, perhaps with a box of cheap wine. Perhaps watch a comedy then right after switch to a horror and do that all day, and hope wine blurs the line so I laugh st horror and jump in fright at comedy.

I love banana cakes, but failed to make them on my own. Perhaps I wasn't patient enough for the process of baking takes forever. This one with cassava flour seems like an easier.3 Here is my first disaster. Someone advised me to keep the dough for a day so it ferments a bit before cooking, but it tasted awful. I first made it like ordinary pancakes (pic 1) and the result was horrible, so I deep fried it and it was nicer (pic 2).

New year resolution is to learn to make this. A delicacy around here. We call them kabalagala, but in English they say it is "pancakes" which some people now call "pan" or "paani". They are made from overripe sweet bananas and cassava flour, and I think these ingredients, along with milk and eggs, could make waffles too. If I crack it I'll stop buying wheat.

Most of the techs I imagine are not new, just traditional ways of doing stuff that have been lost over the years because of capitalism, and are revived using new tools. A jar like this gives me ideas, perhaps there's a whole vault full of them, or granaries/silos built like this to store very large quantities of food. For decades? Thanks a lot for the pointer!

Because their policies allow anyone in the world to open an account and back projects, but they allow only people based in certain countries to create projects. I'm in Uganda, East Africa, and so not eligible to create a campaign in any of the platforms, apart from patreon. It has something to do with the global financial setup, all these platforms use either stripe or paypal. But patreon also uses payoneer which is more inclusive.

Until today, there are communities who trace their lineage to an ancestor who was banished from his home village over a crime (and one folk tale from West Nile has such a storyline). In the film the protagonist will insist on his innocence, leaving the community with no option but to send him away.
But also, this is a community in the near future, who still have memories of prison/police, so.... Well, I'm yet to write the script but these will be in my head as I do.

I don't understand why a lot of software in #linux don't read external hard drives. Trying to use Gaupol subtitle editor and it is functional. But it can't read files on external HDD or flash drives, which makes it the only pain.

Why does #google make it so hard to delete photos from google photos? I never signed up for it, and have denied it all permissions on my #android phone, but somehow my photos keep ending up there. Perhaps I might have accidentally used it to open a phone once, and that gave it all permission to upload my photos?
Yet to delete it from the app it looks like I have to go photo by photo. For thousands of them. There seems to be no way to delete all at once.

In 2017 I made my first ever visit to the USA, and while there I thought being a movie tourist (going to places featured in films I enjoyed) would be a nice way to pass the time. I removed the Jetpack plugin from my wordpress site, and now I don't get AI features at me every time I go there, so I guess that was the cause? I wonder why they force everyone to use jetpack and for a long time I thought it was essential for running my site, but it's just bloat.

A cinema picture, and I will hope for it to go to festivals and perhaps land on a distribution deal to give it maximum exposure.
If that doesn't yield good results then I will explore ways of pushing it out via the internet, maybe using a monetization app on peertube or something, and then just go round begging for people to review it and spread the word.
