i have had a few air quality meters and appreciated them, changed some things about behavior and house as a result; but the annoying thing about many is the need for mains power. even if they have a battery it usually runs out and you forget to re-plug. like these two (co2 meter and pm10 meter)

js the language used to be ok, and now it is good and even great sometimes. this happened because people decided to work together, and because it was all funded by ads and phone sales and what-not. both conditions have been necessary, and both are lacking if we push responsibility out to "tooling"

a funny webassembly story: perfetto.dev's native trace format uses protobufs. it used to be json, which was used by chrome://tracing. there is a CLI program to convert between binary and json, if you need it; and to open a binary perfetto trace with chrome://tracing, perfetto will run that converter in webassembly https://perfetto.dev/docs/quickstart/traceconv#opening-in-the-legacy-systrace-ui

you can externalize some of the cost by reusing components made by apple / google / mozilla. all of the alternative "browsers" do this except ladybird afaiu. servo re-uses quite a number of things from firefox and that's fine and great. shitting on mozilla while arguing for servo or on google while using some chromium variant is nonsensical

lukewarm take: funding a browser via voluntary individual donations will not work. browers are too expensive. (could they be cheaper? maybe, but there is a lot of essential complexity.)
browsers need a bigger funding structure. the only appropriate strategies that i know of are ads (all of them), product sales (apple could do this) and taxation. i would prefer the latter (i.e. the eu funds a browser), but barring that i do not fault companies using other strategies

it should bring it in! if you are zeroing just before allocating, but in a big enough chunk to vectorize, then you are in the happy space (afaiu, ymmv, &c &c)
in whippet this means when you find a hole, you clear it before allocating into it. but dynamics depend on the program, holes could be just 16 bytes or could be up to 64kB
