🧵 I published my perspective on Bitcoin governance.
Where does Bitcoin derive its censorship-resistance from? And how do we preserve it?
Sharing some frameworks I've found helpful 👇
The main insight: Bitcoin's unique value comes from censorship-resistance, and the two magic ingredients to achieve it are:
✅ Free users
✅ Free software
-> Censorship-resistance requires free users
-> Free users require free software
Traditional governance asks "who decides?"
These systems are easy to co-opt and can therefore never preserve censorship-resistance.
Bitcoin governance asks "how do we preserve free users?", and this is they key to preserving censorship-resistance.
For developers, this means:
-> Optimize for user agency
-> Default to user choice over "optimal" outcomes
Remember: we're building infrastructure for freedom.
These are just my current thoughts - governance philosophy evolves with experience - but it's clear to me that censorship-resistance is a derivative of free users.
There is a leap of faith required in bitcoin’s governance model.
We must trust that when users are given genuine freedom and access to good information, they will make choices that preserve what makes bitcoin valuable.
Users who want bitcoin to remain censorship-resistant will choose software and rules that maintain that property.
Users who prefer other properties may make different choices, but the network’s evolution will reflect the aggregate of all these individual decisions.
When we take the leap and trust that free users will make the right choices, Bitcoin succeeds.
I would love to hear perspectives from builders, users, and researchers working on or thinking about these problems.

I think we mainly agree. Nostr CEOs are lower value targets compared to platform CEOs. But govs could still come after them for ✨️ reasons.
It's silly to expect a protocol to fix arbitrary arrests.

He's correct, nostr doesn't fix CEOs getting arrested. But his point is also moot because targeting CEOs of nostr apps, even of big ones, will never have the disruptive return for governments that the arrest of a centralized platform's CEO has, mostly because switching costs are close to zero for nostr users, while there is no switching option for telegram users.

The information we have about both historic cases is second-hand. On top of that, history is written by the victors and there is a good amount of nuance lost over time, as your example of Father Coughlin demonstrates: barely anyone knows today that there was factions in the US supporting Germany, and that's mostly because it didn't fit the narrative that the US wanted to establish in the history books.
Secondly, we cannot epistemologically know if deplatforming Coughlin or the Hutu radio saved lives. It's even possible that shutting down the Hutu radio could have inadvertently silenced moderate Hutu voices that might have offered alternative perspectives or advocated for peace that could have changed the dynamics of the genocide.
My point is it is impossible to attribute positive consequences to the restriction of speech, but the negative consequences of restriction of speech are always self-evident.

Most people are excited about nostr because it makes it hard to deplatform dissenting voices by virtue of its architecture and I am no different. Hearing you sympathize with deplatforming in the context of a presentation about Nostr put me off, that's why I had to ask directly.
Mind you, I'm not questioning property rights. We're in agreement that you should have every right to kick me out of your living room or your relay for any or no reason, only listen to and associate with the people that you like.
My question to you was about deplatforming as in restricting a person’s ability to communicate publicy - specifically in the context of Nostr.
Glad to hear that you do want Nostr to be a protocol that enables even speech you don't like. Thanks for clarifying.

Nvm, found it. Small UX bug there.
Hitting the "settings" button should always lead to main settings page imho, but when you go into mint config, then switch to wallet, switch back to settings, it brings me to mint config instead of settings main page.

I would call it being upfront and direct about the tradeoff that is made: convenience and ease-of-use for sovereignty and full control.
The alternatives are either being technical and running a server yourself or going through extensive KYC and then using closed source services where you pay a % of your revenue as fees.
Blink X BTCPay is offering merchants a middleground with a reliable service on open source software and just a phone number for registration, no fees for Intraledger / Lightning payments and 0.2% spread for Stablesats conversion. I'm hopeful this reduces a lot of friction for using BTCPay tools and will make bitcoin payments in (e-)commerce a lot more accessible. We'll see.
