Coming from someone who has an electric unicycle, electric scooters are death traps.
I've seen people flying down roads on these with no gear; no real helmet, not even a bike helmet.
These things have like 8" wheels and zero suspension. If you hit a pothole you're a meat crayon.

Omnidirectional handhelds (non-HF) aren't going to broach a mountain range without a repeater, especially if you're both in a valley.
I think this ultimately comes down to what repeaters you can use. Hopefully there is a repeater on a mountain somewhere you both have line of sight to.

Update, I ate shit.
Slowed down to turn onto a gravel road and my front disc brake locked up. It had been loose (pushing it, not pulling it), but I didn’t think it was a problem. Yes, I’m retarded. If I was a better rider I could have maybe gassed through the lockup, but I didn’t.

I’ll bend identical conduits for the “sleds” so there are no fittings on the ground inhibiting dragging it.
The (small) vertical struts will vary in length to give me the appropriate winter angle.
I will use T fittings to add horizontal members to create a box. Once they’re on I’ll use steel cable and turnbuckles to make it rigid, followed by welded wire screen attached using steel cable ties.

AFAIK the chicken is fairly untainted as far as grocery store chickens go. You're still going to have the retained bleach water from processing, but that's with every chicken you don't pluck yourself. I haven't found the cooking process itself to be repugnant.
They're $5 and they're all the way in the back of the store.
