At 1:15 AM normal people are fast asleep for several hours sawing logs.
Meanwhile, I'm fawking around in the cellar with cover off the main electrical panel that connects the house to the barn and garage and trying to figure out the maximum number of amps that can be pushed between the buildings. I was hoping the line to the barn was over-spec'ed for the current 60A allocated. It isn't (sad face).
Why do I do this to myself? Insomnia and an active imagination are pain. Ha.

Agree, I've got FreeBSD running Plasma with very few issues, just little paper cut things here and there where things are not configured out of the box as expected.
The only thing that really annoys is not having a proper smb client to mount cifs shares in the fstab. It's not the end of the world, could run nfs on the nas, but I don't wanna. Ha. Otherwise there is not really a a show stopper to using FreeBSD on the desktop in my case.
It's disappointing that all these operating system teams are afraid to make a statement one way or the other due to a fear of "missing out" or whatever it is that is stopping them one way or the other.
That shows a lack of organization in the lesser case and a lack of character in the greater case, IMO.

Yeah, that's my understanding as well.
I'd consider going to FreeBSD just 'cause it has the broadest amount of support in community and hardware but the project seems to be as wishy-washy as Alpine re: slop so what's the point? For me, it would be kind of reducing utility to in terms of hardware support to end up in the same place.
I like OpenBSD conceptually but I find the community support off-putting the few interactions I've had/seen and it has even less hardware and software support.
NetBSD just doesn't fit what I need.
Elementary is a "safe place" currently, IMO (systemd notwithstanding 😜).
I'd like to see them re-baseline on Debian Testing the way Tuxedo is doing but that's unlikely to happen any time soon, if ever. And it's certainly not a reason not to use e. Ha.

FWIW, Chimera Linux has a similar bent and it provides basically all the desktop environments you'd typically want - if you don't want a GTK based desktop like Pantheon you can run KDE, LXQt, whatever.
Pantheon is awesome, just a little restrictive for my tastes. I ran e for like 3-4 years back in the late-teens and it did everything I wanted at that time.
Chimera uses the FreeBSD userland, is very snappy, etc. Small dev team but I haven't seen any issues in the ~2 years I've been paying attention to it. No systemd.
These to me are the two standout Linux distros of the moment re: slop.
I'm running Alpine these days and they are kind of wishy-washy on the slop thing it seems. There's a lot of inertia for me to move to something else right now and if I do move I may leave Linux altogether perhaps.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Having run email systems some 15-20 years ago for a government agency, I'm kind of on the fence about whether to bother self-hosting my own domains. It takes effort to do it correctly.
One of the things that people mention is how belligerently stupid or adversarial Google and Microsoft are to small email servers.
I think at this stage of Internet standards and evolution and email routing, etc. that now is the time to say "so what?" and if these to corps won't accept your mail then that is a problem for the recipient to (i.e. ~gmail.com, ~microsoft.com user) to resolve. Get a better email server.
The rest is just technical stuff.
I mean, email just isn't that important any more. If someone wants contact they'll figure it out. Or not. \_ (ツ)_/

It's a rainy day here so instead of working on the garden folly, I've been messing around with desktops and whatnot. I'm supposed to be on vacation... ha.
Finally tried out Cosmic. I like it, it's pretty light (and also unfinished) but it is snappy and usable as far as I could tell in a few hours of usage.
In the short term I'd expect to extend functionality with other apps if I was to daily it. As an example, there is no font management that I could find and ended up adding fonts manually.

Still messing around with (trialing?) FreeBSD over here.
One of the little things that I missed from the typical Linux configuration of KDE Plasma is that FreeBSD's default configuration does not have the Restart and Shutdown menu options in the menu by default.
I found a thread on the FreeBSD forums that explains what to do but figured I'd share it here since there seems like a lot of people are trying out FreeBSD as a desktop client these days. And hunting and pecking through forums is annoying so...
Steps:
* Add your user to the wheel group
* Create /usr/local/etc/polkit-1/rules.d/40-wheel-group.rules with this content:
polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
if (subject.isInGroup("wheel")) {
return polkit.Result.YES;
}
});
* Reboot and you should see the Restart and Shutdown menu options like in the attached screenshot.
This is FreeBSD 15.1 and Plasma 6.6.6

Alpine doesn't get enough mention as a desktop client. It has full featured versions of all the standard desktops in the repos and they are easily installed using the setup-desktop script. I'm running Plasma and LXQt these days but have run Gnome in the past.
We'll see what happens as Gnome gets more and more reliant on systemd and if teams keep making the effort to create work arounds.
At least KDE has made a statement that they have no intentions of abandoning non-systemd distributions and also it is now considered "the standard" desktop for FreeBSD so that bodes well for continued Plasma utility in non-systemd distributions... I guess.

I run Alpine nowadays. It does everything I want in a Linux distribution (desktop, server, embedded). If it wasn't for Alpine and it being an "easy button" of sorts for someone that's been using Linux for a long time I'd be running FreeBSD.

Finally migrated my gitea instance to forgejo. Was simple enough and took like 5 minutes to accomplish.
It's basically just modify the docker compose file to reference the correct forgejo version to replace gitea and bring it up. This is an internal home lab system so no 2fa/oauth or whatever to reverse engineer as part of the process.

Anyone have the TL;DR; on self hosted fediverse software?
Mastodon vs Snac vs Pleroma vs ?
I'm looking for something that is super low maintenance and lightweight / easy on resources but as full featured as practical within those constraints.
Something easy to tune re: post lengths and media types would be cool too. A "text first" platform is desired.
I've run Mastodon in the past and it's like fishing with nukes for this use case.
What's out there?

I'll try again when I hear about more AMD RDNA 3 GPU kernel changes.

Hard crash to a green screen on the DP connected screen, black screen on the HDMI screen. Was playing video out of Jellyfin fullscreen on the DP screen. Now it's looping the last 1-2 seconds of audio in the video. Can't login remotely, totally hung otherwise.

Ok, I think I've got this display card under control - or so it seems. It hasn't crashed since Wednesday.
I guess this is a combo AMD RDNA3 Navi23 and KDE Plasma (+ Wayland?) bug...
I backed out all my Linux kernel command line switches for AMD GPUs and it crashed to green screen in less than a half hour. So, re-adding them stopped that from happening.
... amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x410 amdgpu.tmz=0 amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 amdgpu.sg_display=0 ...
And then the cursor thing is fixed <?!> by adding
KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1
Currently this is what is set:

From a user experience point of view I don't see any difference with that software cursor setting.
There's another wrinkle to this that might be a factor but I can't really test around it currently. This is a multi-head machine and one screen is connected via HDMI and one is DP.
Perhaps this wouldn't be a problem if both screens were connected via the same type of connector.
Both screens are set to the same refresh frequency. But, in the display control app one reads back at 60.00 Hz while the other is 60.000 Hz. Minor thing right? But in trying to make this work I've seen references to AMD GPU weirdness in multi-head configurations where the refresh rates were different between screens. Red herring perhaps.
Anyway, don't know if there are (or will be) any people trying to make a RX 5800 XT GPU behave under Linux but this seems to be what worked for me and my dual head setup. I'll update if anything changes.

Now to figure out how I can replay some old captures in csv format into something that can be dumped into a live CANBus (or reasonable facsimile) for further playing.

One thing I've noticed is that the Pkg Power consumption displayed in btop is ~1.0W higher with the 7800 XT vs the 6600. Unfortunate.

Back at testing whether my RDNA3 card (7800 XT) will behave itself on this system.
I'm running kernel 7.1.4 (Alpine linux-stable) so supposedly there are a bunch of fixes since 6.19 -> 7.0 -> 7.1.x.
We'll see. Last hour has been solid. No screen artifacts or horizontal aberrations on terminal or web browser windows.
When it did occasionally work adequately before it would hard crash to a green screen on one of the monitors after about 24 hours or so. Didn't matter what kernel parameters I put on the kernel cmd line.
It's kind of weird as I've been running this card in a different system (same OS, different gen CPU/mobo) successfully but it is a single head system so maybe that's the difference. Some combinations of cobbled together junk just don't work in the PC space.

Spent a lot of time today playing with OPNSense (err, fighting - a while back my whining about not getting along with networking was no joke).
Eventually got what I wanted to work to actually work (OPNsense as an exposed node inside a Bell Giga Hub network routing/NAT'ing to a dmz host hanging off said exposed node) but omfg I suck at this stuff. It's painful - be glad you can't watch me work. Ha.
Aaannyyyywwwaaaayyyyyy...
If you haven't already upgraded to the latest OPNSense (26.7), you may be surprised by some of the quality of life GUI clean up and more impressively the sped up boot time. On my N150 based box it boots 'super fast' like a normal PC compared to the old fashioned, slow thing it was doing before. No hard data to share, just a seat of the pants anecdote.

For the last two-three months I've been getting an invoice from AWS for $0.78 and have been ignoring it. That account hasn't been used in over five years, had a zero balance, credit card on file is expired, etc., etc.
Don't know if related to the bug, but got no pennies for that here. I don't even know how I'd go about paying it now since that was like 3-4 positions ago at my employer. Ha.

To add insult to injury, the other end of the cable was Lightning and is the only way to connect the iPhone to the car in order to use Maps. And of course the crappy Lighting cable and iPhone are old enough that if you look at it more than once per minute it randomly disconnects because... Lighting... terrible connector is terrible.
Fumbling around in the dark in the car at 4 AM to drive my son to the airport in the city... Not at my best and very low tolerance levels. Minor dramas. Ha.

LXQt is very light. I like it. I have it on an old HP Cloud book (the blue ones) with 4GB of ram and some POS Celeron. It's pretty snappy in spite of the hardware. Plasma was noticeably bad on the same hardware.
I can't remember what compositor Alpine installs. Might be labwc. It's been many months... Should fire it up and at least update.

If one say wanted to move a ZFS root pool from a Linux host and re-install as a root pool on a FreeBSD host, is there anything "special" that needs to be done beyond the standard export/import type tutorials out there?
I mean, beyond mounting the rpool initially from the install media and deleting everything outside of /root and /home I mean?
Backups are verified; just trying to save the time involved for rebuilding ZFS under FreeBSD (vs import) and restoring TBs of data.
Anything special or considerations about the Linux -> FreeBSD movement of the pool?

This is pretty cool. Compiled and runs cleanly on Alpine. Selecting colours by hue will take some work with the crappy image I'm using. Might do some pre-processing in gimp or something and try it again.

Seems like it's been a busy week for the Alpine devs.
This weekend repo upgrade linux-stable from 7.0.10 > 7.1.3; Plasma from 6.6.5 > 6.6.6. I'll be keeping an eye on the later. Ha.
Maybe I'll take a swipe at trying the 7800 XT (RDNA3) card in my main machine again to see if things have improved. It's too nice out to be screwing around in the lab today.

That's interesting.
I just "unmothballed" my old N100 based router (SZBox) and installed Alpine on it.
Pkg power use in btop says ~1.7W but the Kill-A-Watt says just under 13W. This is at idle.
The 6 x 2.5GB ports (one active) and dual nvme probably not helping.
You are getting much more compute / W bang for the buck. At least at idle. Ha

Does anyone know of a tool that...
Takes an image of a line chart / graph and can turn it into am approximate data table?
If inclined, I could probably use some AI BS to do this but want to avoid fishing with nukes, and do it locally - without me firing up an image editor and manually picking off data points. Ha.

Some more thoughts on this...
Will distros downstream of Debian Testing support Debian in some form or fashion, either monetarily or through helping with other things like infrastructure support or getting involved in building Testing/Sid?
Is there an opportunity here for a collective of distro maintainers (incl Debian) to create a new, Testing adjacent Debian stream, for OEM/VAR teams like Tuxedo, System76, or community distros like say, KDE Neon or Elementary?

I hope that non-commercial, community based distros that use Ubuntu as a base will be looking hard at this as an option as well.

Is it just me or does Vivaldi just not support the standard mouse button middle button paste or Ctrl-^arrow/Ctrl-v_arrow movements anywhere in browser? This is the flatpak version.
Settings reveal nothing, does not appear to be anything in the "hidden" flags settings. I'm guessing this is a choice similar to Gnome 50 (49?) turning off middle button paste as the default.
I mean, if that's the case, then fine. It's a super slick browser but it breaks those ancient little habits when working with forms based work flows.
I'll probably go back to a gecko browser that adheres to the standard 'unixy' way of doing things I guess.

I've never understood the "outdated" comment. I think one person said it and then it got parroted a lot. Similar to "elementary is like an macOS clone" (it isn't).

More whinjing about AMD GPU drivers...
So, downgraded the box with the 7800 XT to a 6600 (RDNA 2). Been rock solid over the last 24 hours.
Further research seems to imply that the problems are mostly isolated to 6.1X kernels and RDNA3 GPUs.
I moved the 7800 XT in my test box (7.0.10) and it's been solid in that host ever since. That machine is single head so don't know if that is a factor.
I think I'll try swapping them back in the AM. Too late in the day to be futzing with that now.

Had to get the scanner working and this was the first time trying KDE Skanpage app (flatpak - not in Alpine repos).
It automatically found my wife's Epson Artisan 837 (i.e very old - ~2011!) even though it's on a different subnet. Simple interface, much less friction than expected.
It's nice when stuff 'just works'.

If Vivaldi had uBlock Origin I'd probably use it more.
I have to use a Chromium based browser to access some sites (business services web sites) and on those rare occasions I'm always impressed by how "snappy" Vivaldi is compared to Firefox and derivatives.
Vivaldi is a much more useful experience on iOS than the iOS lobotomized Firefox in the Apple app store.
Because of the lack of ublock and other extensions like cookie auto-delete and whatnot, I don't do much casual web browsing or researching things on my iOS phone - just the daily routine sites where I understand that there are no adverts - and only when I'm "out and about", never at home where I have access to 'better' browsing platforms. I got rid of my iPad for similar reasons.
I still use Waterfox on Android because I can run uBlock and other extensions.
Sure, Vivaldi is not totally open source but... I hate to say it... I'm starting to care less when it comes to the hellscape that the web has turned into.
I'll still use a gecko based browser for most things.

Actually, I did make a change at that time... using the Arch Wiki's page for AMD (Sec 5.3.1) I added a new boot parameter.

Oh yeah - being wide open like that is not good. Sounds like samba is set to guest browsing for everything on the filesystem.
I don't have any familiarity with Mint. But there must be some kind of app to tune what can and can not be shared? Control panel applet or right clicking on the root (home?) directory or something?
Since the Mint box can't see the Windows box I'm guessing that 'cifs-utils' and/or similar gvfs friends are not installed.
If you go into the software update tool is there anywhere to add system components, something along the lines of 'windows shares' support?

I love that feeling you get when you finish tuning your Linux desktop box with everything optimized and "just so" and nothing left to mess with or install. Colours, hardware acceleration, menus, widgets/plasmoids, filesystems backed up, etc.

For giggles tried the same thing on a Debian box I have here (compile from source) and it installs and can be selected as expected.
Weird.
