Earlier today I re-watched this mini-doc on James J Hill and how he succeeded during the railroad boom despite refusing government subsidies that were plentiful at the time.
He focused on efficient capital allocation and investing in civilization.
Part of his success was derived from how simply he set the goals for his company.
"We must operate:
- the fastest locomotives,
- to pull the longest trains,
- with maximum tonnage,
- over the straightest tracks,
- using the least change in elevation,
- with minimal maintenance costs."
Every capital allocation decision he made focused on achieving these goals.
It's hard not to think about the AI boom and all of the government investment going into the sector these days after watching this. How many opportunists are circling their wagons to feed from the government trough at the moment? How efficiently is that easy money going to be allocated?
Who in AI and the booming energy infrastructure industry budding around it is taking the hard but lucrative path that James J Hill took during the railroad boom?

Days like today are always fun because number go up is exciting and it's extremely gratifying to be validated after many years of being told "you're crazy".
What makes these days especially rewarding though is that bitcoin's price going up is a signal that we're making progress on our journey to fix the money.
The world is increasingly manic due to the ills wrought by the fiat monetary system. Money printing debases everything, not just purchasing power.
By fixing the money with bitcoin, we can begin to anchor our world back to reality. This gives me an incredible amount of hope for the future and my children.

The beauty of bitcoin is the simplicity of its design.
There will only ever be 21 million bitcoin.
Blocks come in every ~10 minutes.
The difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks.
The block subsidy gets cut in half every 210,000 blocks.
Blockspace is limited.
A transaction must be valid to get included in a block.
In a hyper-financialized and centrally planned global economy bitcoin's simplicity is counterintuitive.
"Monetary systems are complex. It can't be this easy."
Not only CAN money be simple, but it SHOULD be simple. We've been brought up in a counterproductive centralized system and humanity has succeeded in many areas in spite of the central planners.
Imagine what we'll be able to do when the central planners are replaced with a simple, neutral and incorruptible permissionless monetary network. Those who abide by and adapt around bitcoin's simple rule set will be able to coordinate economic activity with orders of magnitude more certainty than they have today.
No more guessing about what the Fed will do, how much debt the Treasury plans on issuing or whether or not capital controls will be turned on like a light switch.
That all goes away under a Bitcoin Standard.
