youtuber/celebrity comics are always so lame. cr1tikal's comic Godslap didn't go anywhere, Kamen America has cute designs but is so preachy it hurts, and this is just a dude putting his rants into a comic book. people are so enamored by the *idea* of comic books but it always seems clear that they don't understand it beyond decent art and text bubbles. idk who this Sciver guy is but I will say I dig this art, it seems he's a professional, it's too bad the dialogue is absolute coal (first page is his work from 1996 and the second page is from his new series, he wrote and drew both)

manga has pretty consistent art, albeit all very similar and typically falling into similar tropes (see the isekai plague). western comics have always been experimental and underground and so the art varies wildly.

haven't been reading much manga lately, actually went back to comics for a bit. I will say there are unique qualities that western comics do that I like better than manga; color's an obvious one, but I really like how comics handle speech/thought bubbles. just from how it's drawn and how much the words fill it can tell you so much about how the words are being said. I think that's becoming a lost art.

Lara Croft, for example, has consistently been popular for decades; Raiden Shogun, on the other hand, ballooned explosively in popularity for a year and then dropped off a cliff the moment new girls and new gachas came around.
