Hello everyone! We had a rough week last week, with two horrible accounts using our instance as a platform to spread hate, and an outage when we tried to upgrade to v4.5.0. Both of these really bothered us, so after a period of reflection, we've decided to make some changes.
We want to focus on making mas.to the best instance we can for our existing users (many of whose donations keep us running!) and their friends. And so we're moving to an invitation-only model until further notice.

We are, but we’ve also had a handful of accounts that are almost certainly scams. Our moderators are working with contacts who can vouch for validated individuals, but this is onerous and not foolproof. Regarding the account you mentioned earlier, this has already been validated with us and we’ve put a note on the account to confirm.

Speaking from a Mastodon perspective, a 'clean' shutdown of an instance should involved the self-destruct process, although I appreciate that's not always possible. And yes, from a technical perspective posts are just text in a DB so I'm not too bothered about the resource implications, and old media from remote instances is pruned after a certain period. But I agree it's 'messy' where orphaned statuses/accounts are floating out there.

We’re sad to hear that https://botsin.space is going to be closing down in the near future.
If you host a bot there and would like to migrate it to mas.to, you’re welcome!
We do have one rule specific to bots:
“All automated (bot) accounts must enable the bot flag in their account preferences, respect #nobot markers, and post as unlisted unless making less than one post per hour.”
(The last bit is just to stop the public timeline getting flooded with bot posts.)

The Mastodon devs have just dropped Mastodon v4.2.12 which is a hotfix following Friday's v4.2.11 release.
We've just applied this update so we're all up-to-date.
