After capturing packets of the SSL Handshake the issue was identified and resolved. Below is a breakdown of what was happening and how I resolved it:<br/><br/>1. The client application had a very restricted cipher suite list in it&#39;s client hello packet that only had 8 GCM cipher suites.<br/>2. The server was configured with an RSA certificate from letsencrypt which supported some GCM suites but the OS itself did not support this RSA GCM suite so it could not be offered in server hello packets during a TLS Handshake.<br/>3. The mismatch between the cipher suites caused the connection to be terminated on the server side as it had nothing to offer the client&#39;s application. Other software such as Firefox Browser, Bruno and Firefox support a larger pool of cipher suites and were able to connect to the server via an RSA CBC suite: TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA<br/>4. Since the OS did not support any RSA GCM suite, the solution was to revoke the old RSA cert, issue an ECDSA cert, and increase order of priority of GCM suites in Schannel to be above CBC suites.<br/>5. After a server restart, the server started offering a GCM cipher suite: TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384<br/>That resolved the issue for the client.<br/><br/>Shortly after, it was noted that SQL Server Management could no longer connect to the database. Upon troubleshooting, it was noted that the IIS Crypto which was used to alter the Schannel disabled all TLS protocols except TLS 1.2, when it was instructed to set the default recommended security settings for Windows Server 2012, which was unfortunately not supported by the currently installed MSSQL version. <br/><br/>Upgrading MSSQL 2008 from 10.0.1600.22 SP 0 Patch Level: 10.0.1600.22 to 10.0.6000.29 SP 4 Patch Level: 10.4.6535.0 allowed MSSQL to support TLS 1.2, consequently fixing the issue. The system will not allow a patch to be applied after another without a restart. <br/><br/>This was basically a typical issue caused by running legacy systems in production. Most of the infrastructure was initially accessible only via VPN so some best practices were neglected back in the day. By the time I was recruited, the firm had expanded to accommodating clients from all over Africa; of which, for some, direct access over the internet to our services was paramount. This lead to a lot changes in how clients access our services. I doubt this will be the end of such patches, ideally all servers should just be updated to a supported Windows Server edition, but a mass update like that without considering the legacy tech stack just isn&#39;t advisable either.
