Arsenal are a great team, but they didn’t press for the win against a visibly gassed PSG side and it cost them dearly.

I think they are capable of accomplishing so much more in open play, but in my opinion, Arteta hamstrings them with pragmatism. And if you’re really good at set pieces and have an impressively strong defense? It makes sense to set up that way. I get it.

But when they need to push, can they? This finals loss says no.

For a series of days, I’ve been tackling the back patio. Pressure washed all the moss off, pulled so many weeds from in between the stones, and flossed out the dirt in the gaps with a putty knife. Last night I put down polymeric sand and soaked it in.

Very happy with the results.

Loooong bike ride, then dinner out with my wife at Evie’s Bakery. One of my favorite spots — that kind of funky, eclectic, indie restaurant you can always walk in and find a table.

Took the day off to head up to Natural Bridge State Park with my wife. Pictures don’t really do justice to how massive it is.

Then there are the Blue Ridge Mountains, always gorgeous. Will return to Skyline Trail later this summer, as it’s an official International Dark Sky viewing location. Perhaps in August for the Perseid meteor shower season.

By day? Track is too tedious and too many people! I much prefer the paved trails and seeing the sights.

Took a couple of rest days b/c I could feel my hamstring & feared possible injury. After a consideration of time spent in each HR zone over previous runs, it was clear that I was overdoing the pace, even with 4/1 min run/walk intervals. I ~could~ do that pace, but I ~should~ dial it back a bit & build fitness. Anaerobic all the time wasn’t helping.

Cold tonight, just below freezing and 25 mph (40 kph) winds gusting to 50 mph (80.5 kph). #TeamShorts but definitely bundled elsewhere!

I had wanted Jones over Mac Allister, but I have to admit that Mac Allister was really excellent.

And while Kerkez was messy early (that stab at the ball... 😱), he really was quite good the rest of the game. They must have told him not to cross it anymore and he listened. He was good and physical, which we need more of that physicality.

I'm gutted for Conor Bradley, as he'd looked so much better with regular minutes and is so very good at establishing himself in that forward channel.

Given the defensive and set piece struggles LFC have had and going up a team that excels at set pieces and pressuring defenses... I'm delighted with the result.

Arsenal, like Newcastle in MW1, completely lost their heads and almost gave the game away. I actually believe that Slot, a man who's been under the threat of being sacked, outcoached Arteta.

If Frimpong could place a final pass, or if John Brooks wasn't asleep on VAR duty to see Trossard drop Wirtz in the box, #LFC might even have won.

Ventured further down the greenway into Salem. This segment is pretty industrial, but I sometimes see a heron which, together with several bridge crossings over the Roanoke River, makes it interesting. The heron was not out, but this massive train running parallel to the river made up for it.

Ran/walk 4/1 min intervals to 6.94 km in 53:58 for an average pace of 7:46:km.

Today’s plan: buttress a sagging shelf in my daughter’s closet. Bought some new brackets & thought it’d be pretty straightforward.

However, the vertical foundational wood piece might be overlapping the edge of a stud, but is more edge proximate.

Then the wood rail that the shelf sat upon, is not mounted to the wall, but instead to the foundational piece, leaving a gap between it and the wall and, crucially, meaning that any bracket would not be level with the wall, sagging inward.

A cruelty of aging is that no activity is safe. I somehow injured my groin/hip last night… getting up out of a chair!?! I don’t even know how. Any leg motion in an arcing fashion, that is to say not directly forward, caused such pain that I was reduced to hobbling about. I despaired that my return to #running was over just as I’d begun to think a normalcy was settling in.

This morning, I woke to find the pain had almost entirely subsided. I think I’ll rest another day, but there is hope again.

Today’s mission is to take down this ridiculous 4’ x 6’ tapestry, then patch and paint the repairs. Builders around here in the late 90s and early 00s seemingly put them in every foyer that had an open design. After two years in this house, it’s finally time to stop putting it off.

This will require an extension ladder because it’s on the second story. I wonder how heavy it will be.

Finished "I See You've Called in Dead" by John Kenney and loved it.

Bud Stanley is an obituary writer, adrift after his divorce. After a particularly brutal blind date, Bud has a bit too much to drink and accidentally publishes his own joke obituary. Chaos ensues.

Manages to be witty and funny without being over the top. Really great characters & dialogue, which reveal deep emotional questions about really living & caring for each other.

5/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Was in Indianapolis for the weekend for my stepdad’s 90th(!) birthday party. He told us the story of being 6 years old, his family listening to organ music (out of Chicago! 🤷‍♂️) on the radio on a Sunday, when the news of Pearl Harbor broke. Remembers the day electricity came to their farm and how he was supposed to keep it from his dad as a surprise, but his poker face was not up to the challenge.

I only ever intended to assist someone else when my kids started playing, but there was a shortage of coaches, so… battlefield promotion kind of thing.

But it turned out that I was good at it & kids that played for me liked it enough to keep coming back.

The varsity HS teams, normally impossible for kids that played rec, are filled with kids I coached. Most starters.

But my son aged out & my daughter didn’t want to play her final year, other interests competing. Felt like it was time.
