While in Bright VIC, I explored the Porepunkah area and Mount Buffalo.

Everything outside the High Country was bone dry, brown, and hot. But it cooled down a lot as ingot higher, and everything turned green. It was almost like Atherton in Queensland, but with different trees.

I rode into Forbes NSW yesterday.

It was a perfect day - lots of motorcyclists around, but otherwise no traffic whatsoever on the backroads.

Crumbed steak is a pub staple back home, and I've often lamented that it's basically non-existant outside Central Queensland, but guess what I found at the first pub I stumbled into at Forbes?

Crumbed. Fucking. Wagyu.

It was $40 AUD ($26 USD), but I couldn't say no. Best crumbed steak I've ever had.

All good things must come to an end, and it's nearly time for me to leave Melbourne.

But before leaving, I picked up new tyres for the Harley: Metzeler Cruisetecs. I haven't put them through their paces yet, but I've heard good things.

The original Dunlop tyres lasted just over 14,000 km (8,700 mi). Weirdly, the front tyre wore out faster than the rear.

If you're ever passing through Parkes NSW, you HAVE to take a quick detour to see Murriyang the radio telescope.

This telescope was used to receive images during the Apollo 11 moon landing, and was also features in the movie The Dish.

It's a nice ride out there too, with fields and bendy roads.

Gotta say, I massively underestimated how bad Melbourne traffic is. It took me an hour to ride 21 km (13 mi). The clutch and rear brake sure got a workout.

The Harley has been flawless since Thomas Lee H-D fixed it up. The tyres are getting worn out though, so I'll need to get them replaced at my destination... Melbourne!

Tomorrow is the final 450 km (280 mi) leg of my journey down.

After getting my Harley fixed up, I made a beeline for my next stopover, Dubbo, New South Wales.

Here's the view from the Newell Highway between Moree and Narrabri, one of my favourite stretches of road. It's straight, in great shape, and the surrounding are flat. You can just sit back, cruise, and enjoy the view.

But I noticed the check engine light was now on, and I was worried maybe the battery wasn't charging and could leave me stranded again.

Thomas Lee Harley-Davidson was on my route, so I dropped by to see if they could check my bike out.

Not only did they check the battery and glue up my torn throttle grip, they also pulled a spring from another bike to install for me... all in under an hour! The engine light was just from being jumpstarted, they figured.

I bought roadside assistance from National Motorcycle Alliance just two weeks ago, so that was lucky.

Unluckily, they didn't know how to get to the battery to jump start it because it was buried under the shock and a bunch of cables.

Meanwhile, I called Thomas Lee H-d in Moree, 90 m away, to see if they could fit a new jiffy stand spring, but they wouldn't be able to get one until tomorrow.

This was starting to look like a significant delay to my schedule. 😬

Thomas Lee Harley-Davidson at least explained how to jump start the Harley: connect postive using a screwdriver to reach the terminal, then connect negative to the frame.

"It's not the right way to do it", they said, but it's the easiest way considering how difficult it is to reach the battery.

And it worked! We got the Harley started, so I zip tied the jiffy stand up, threw on my gear, and hit the road, trying to make up for lost time.

So I woke up in yesterday and found my Harley like this.

I saw something black underneath and thought the sump had been punctured, but it was actually a sinkhole that opened up right under the jiffy stand!

Besides scratching up the engine case, it ripped the jiffy stand spring apart, leaving it unable to retract without flopping back down.

But worst of all, the hazard lights turned on and flattened the battery overnight, leaving the bike unable to start.

Day 2 is done. 518 km (321 mi) in around 6 hrs 40 m.

I'm travelling down the Leichardt Highway. It's mostly straight and would be perfect for cruising if it weren't so bumpy and full of potholes. On the upside, there's been basically no traffic.

Peak temperature of 37°C (98.6°F) was really toasty, but at least the humidity is just 35%.

Best part - I'm getting 4.5 L/100 km (52 mpg) fuel economy - much better than usual.

I bought a touring bag that straps to the sissy bar. Now I have more luggage space than ever! I've also added a Sena 60S intercom to my Arai XD-4 helmet.

With the Harley due for its 8,000 km service this week, I gave it its first wash.

It was even filthier than I thought. There was *so much mud* in and around the rear wheel. Cleaned up pretty well though.

I discovered that the lower exhaust shield also got scratched up when I dropped the bike in gravel. More battle scars. 💪🏻

Planning to take it on a small overnight trip next weekend. Can't wait.

With the road trip now over, I've booked my Harley-Davidson Street Bob in for its 8,000 km (5,000 mi) service.

It's been pretty reliable. The only real problem I've had is difficulty shifting from first gear to second - the bike tends to shift into neutral instead. Unsure why, but I'll get the dealer to look at it.

Besides that, one of the turn signal lenses is cracked in multiple places, but that's a cheap fix.

After shopping around for new motorcycle jeans, I bought a fresh pair of Dririder Titans - the exact same ones I've been wearing for the last two years.

I had my eye on a pair of PMJ jeans for their superior protection, but they just don't fit me well. The Dririders fit perfectly, and have held up well in a small slide on the road. My first pair is still in great shape after all this time.

Now that I have two pairs, I can still ride while one is in the wash. 😁

I've been trying to avoid riding my Harley. I'm planning a trip of up to 4,000 km in April, but the next service is due in 5,500 km. I've basically been rationing the difference of 1,500 km so I can get the bike serviced when I return. Motorcycle mechanics will be few and far between where I'm going.

But not riding my new bike sucks. Maybe I should just ride it as much as I want, then get it serviced straight before and after the trip?

Finally saw Longlegs! It was really good.

Maika Monroe is fantastic as the protagonist. I haven't seen her since It Follows in 2014 (also an awesome movie), but it turns out she's been in /a lot/ of highly rated thriller and horror films since then. Now I need to check them all out!

Nicholas Cage hit it out of the park as the titular villain. I couldn't imagine anyone else doing a better job. Can't wait to see him in The Surfer (2024).

Out of all these new models, I think the Flying Flea is the only totally new one.

The Goan, and Classic 650 are a different suite of parts for existing models. Likewise for the Bear, but it also has a modified frame.

I'm not too sure about the FT450 yet.

I've discovered a new challenge to working fully-remote: Daylight Savings Time.

Our headquarters is in a state that observes DST, but my state doesn't. For the next few months, I'm behind most of my coworkers by an hour. Meetings that started early now start *really* early.

I passed my motorcycle course and upgraded to an unrestricted license! 🎉

It was easy - basically a recap of the same course I did to get my restricted license two years ago. Only difference was that we had to do it on unrestricted motorcycles.

I found my trainer-supplied bike (some Honda inline-4 standard) very uncomfortable, with a forward-leaning position, difficult to turn, and with the stiffest clutch I've ever used. I can't wait for my new bike to arrive.

On the way to the grocery store, I decided to take a short (400 km) detour and visit Moranbah, QLD - a small inland mining town.

Nice little place, with a big bucket, and lots of rusty dirt.

Couldn't stay long though, as I only had five hours to get there and back before the grocery store closed. I'll have to visit again and check out some of the other towns in the area.

I use Fedilab and just tested this out. It will let you draft posts, attach photos, and add captions while offline. However, it seems that it can't post opportunistically. Submitting a post while offline produces an error about the attachment upload failing.

This would definitely be a neat feature for clients to support.

I don't remember struggling with keys in Blood. However, I do remember the enemies being a lot more difficult on the standard difficulty than Doom or Duke Nukem 3D. It took me a while to get used to it and stop getting blasted by hitscanners. 😁

BMW, Triumph, Indian, Aprilia, Royal Enfield, and Vespa are 400 km away.

Locally, we have Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Harley, KTM, Husqvarna, Gas Gas, and CFMoto.

Royal Enfield used to be close by. Sadly, dealerships are gradually dropping them due to problems with the national importer.

I actually wonder if Harley are doing ok in Australia. They certainly seem to have plenty of dealerships. Other brands like Triumph, BMW, and Indian might have better value, but none of them have dealerships within 400 km of me. There are also Harley mechanics everywhere due to their ubiquity.

Unfortunately, the Japanese brands can't really compete in the cruiser segment. Besides the Vulcan S and Rebel, they've all been discontinued in Australia.
