But the world’s a bit chaotic right now and so is the fiat system which I, unfortunately, still have to feed. On top of that, my not-so-cheap 3D printer finally gave up on me, leaving me stuck while I sort things out (although on the flip side I finally found some time to post an update!).</p> <p>In the meantime, I’ve been experimenting with a highly requested feature: a <strong>USB‑C charging port</strong>.</p> <p>I knew this would stretch my skills a bit, but among all the suggestions, this one made the most sense. In public spaces, it adds discreteness, and it’s actually useful. imagine occupying the only available outlet and still being able to charge your phone.</p> <p>To make it work, I had to completely re‑design the PCB and dig deeper into the USB‑C charging protocol. If you already know it, you can skip this part. If not, it’s far more complex than it looks. I thought I could just add a USB‑C receptacle, tie it to the power rails, throw in a few capacitors and resistors, and call it a day. <strong>Nope.</strong> Your device has to <em>negotiate</em> with the charger to decide how much power it can safely draw, check cable reliability, polarity, and voltage variations.</p> <p>There are two main ways to handle this: the proper <strong>USB Power Delivery (PD)</strong> protocol, or a simpler method using variable resistances. I went for the simpler route. Mostly because of PCB space (and my sanity), but also because PD is overkill for this application. So, I chose a chip that takes care of the handshaking automatically and can deliver up to <strong>3 A; that’s 15 W at 5 V.</strong> Not bad for a wall‑plugged Bitaxe, right? <em>Does your Antminer charge your phone?</em></p> <p>Everything worked on the first try, which was immensely satisfying. I spent a couple of weeks on schematics and PCB design (starting from the BitHalo base), then another two for manufacturing, shipping, and assembly right on my desk. It just works. The chip tops out at <strong>50 °C</strong>, which is quite manageable.</p> <p>So, what’s next? The last bit (and my favorite part) was to print the updated casing with the new port cutouts. Unfortunately, that’s when my 3D printer decided to die mid‑print (result on the top image) just out of warranty, of course. I’ll probably have to replace it or make a call as to whether or not buy a replacement part which costs 1/3 of the printer itself.
