Across England just over a quarter of all children live in poverty, rising to over a third of children in London; no wonder many voters do not believe claims by our political class that the UK economy is not dysfunctional & just needs some tweaks to improve.

This level of child poverty doesn't happen by accident nor does it happen quickly; its an indictment of the callousness & inhumanity of our political class' management of the UK's political economy.

#UK #inequality
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/mar/26/child-poverty-london-housing-crisis

      The affordability of housing has dipped from its historic highs (when measured as a multiple of median earnings) - see chart below.

This dip, however still leaves housing across England at just on twice as expensive realty to median earnings as it was a quarter of a century ago (with London even more unaffordable).

Until this ratio is down to at least what it was in 2000 the housing crisis will not be solved - this reduction is a necessary not sufficient condition to end the crisis!

#housing

The UK's energy policy over decades (and its reliance on the market) has now bitten us in the backside;

rather than have a strategic view of energy security, our political class have been convinced that markets would offer us energy at all times because it was in the sellers' interest.

The problem with such economic approaches is they assume that our markets relations are somehow inoculated from any wider disruption... it now turns out that this is very much not the case!

#energy #politics

      Seemingly some lower priced imports POTUS Trump does like:

In an executive order yesterday he paved the way for the importation of medicines from countries where they are cheaper, in a direct move against Big Pharma that often charges US customers around three times the lowest prices levied outside the USA.

This will surely be a popular move, but not with the Pharma sector, which (one must conclude) have done too little to seek favour at the Court of the Tangerine Tyrant.

#BigPharma #politics

      As Sally Gainsbury (Nuffield Trust) says at the heart of the budget part of the NHS crisis is a simple fact:

'While technological advance elsewhere tends to reduce costs, in healthcare it increases them by expanding what treatments are possible.
