Hmmm... the main way I could be happy with those retrocomputer projects would require just mostly foregoing the notion of working in RAM and largely just going full-persistent, with RAM being the minimal working-memory.

Without fast persistent storage that would be pretty slow. On the other hand, it would make power fluctuations and such barely do anything as almost no state would ever truly be volatile.

      webdav (http), sftp (ssh), 9p

Are these our options for reasonable network transfer or access options that can be (or should be possible to) FUSE mounted? (Yes, I deliberately excluded NFS and Samba.)

I thought about ftp but I vaguely recall it being fussy and having RCE & similar bullshit galore.

An object.

Of course insulting a status symbol still involves an ego-based violent reaction, but I don't think they can actually feel the emotions normally involved.

I wonder about tablets, are there some where it would be fully feasible to just use a Linux distribution on them, disable all the mobile parts (is there something the OS can do here?) and just using them as conventional computers with USB-C/OTG hubs?

Essentially something that would keep old tablets usable without the dramatic security consequences of outdated Android.

Other than formalizing the adoption of some improvements that really should have something like CLRFIs, I don't really see a point in new CL spec versions.

It holds up pretty well for the model of computation it considers a priority.

There are some models of computation its design cannot quite accommodate with the richness one would hope, though. CLOS collides in some unfortunate ways with massive parallelism.

Misbehaving scrappers overwhelming servers is just a demonstration of yet another fatal flaw in the server-centric model of networked communications.

The solution isn't to make it worse for humans (and irrelevantly slightly more expensive for commercially abusive scrappers), the solution is to move away from a model that clearly had issues even before rampant abuse became a thing.

And another note on rampant abuse and scrappers, scrapping does *not* need to be abusive. It is not synonymous with abusive behavior nor does it imply it. Providing a more reasonable way to get tarball'd copies of static sites or weekly db dumps (both of which could be torrented, like Wikipedia's) would prevent load even from those that are being considerate about it.

Much of the uses I have for scrapping are effectively working around bad administrator decisions, fuckups (both theirs and those of others such as infrastructure operators/providers') and protocol/design limitations (always-online with low latency assumptions are not good assumptions).

Assuming they've bothered to even consciously use such a framework instead of going with whatever impulse they have.

> which, is what historical communist extremists have done (lenin, stalin.)

Those were just fascists with a red coat of paint. Opportunists that took on the trappings of a different movement to fool others.

In particular, C#’s AOT was not good enough.

I see

> I guess that “AOT” may be a requirement to avoid requiring people to have another runtime installed (I know I would be miffed if I had to install a JVM in order to compile my front end project)

If it's packaged in one's distro I don't really see the issue, unless it requires a ridiculous amount of storage.

I reckon cycling or walking to somewhere to carry out unless bureaucracy would cause less damage than the electricity wasted by JavaScript.

Many highly corrupt places have designed their urban environments to be car-centric in order to enable the petrol and car industries to extract rents from society. This has led to considerable negative effects on health as well as statistically significant spurious deaths.

That being said, with pandemics being an issue, lightweight networked computation options should be prefered to unnecesssary in-person meetings. The energy & resource use resulting from an infection and potential care outweight the savings, not to mention the personal distress momentary and long-term that could result.

Computational notebooks are useful educational tools.

Active engagement's positive effects on memorization and learning are well researched by now.

They could also not pretend to be using HTML and could be fully Free/Libre Software (environments) distributed as such, rather than abusing HTML & web-based technology.

> None of them need JavaScript and should NOT have JavaScript.
Correct. They should be using Lisp.

But most of them also don't need a dynamic interactive code environment at all.

> Working without JavaScript is the minimum acceptable quality standards for any website.
Yes.

It doesn't need to be particularly powerful for electronics to receive it and very few user-oriented items emit it in a way that couldn't be fairly easily filtered out/tolerated as noise.

> It could be a device-to-device meshnet, with many base stations, provided all the devices are in visual range (with maybe a backup wireless link), but sensitive enough detectors that can pick up for example a stream of single photos are patented up the wazoo and such sort of bandwidth and connection sharing arrangements are prevented as much as possible.

Basically all of those patents should be invalidated for prior work (of which there is quite a bit online), but mostly I think they should all be invalidated because the entire patent office should be invalidated as harmful to scientific and societal progress. (A lot of energy/resource efficiency improvements that we *need* with the climate crisis are locked away by patent rentseeking.)
