I have an #AI prediction. You know how all these #ChatControl laws are getting rushed through various governments (#Canada: Bill C-22, for example)? You know how all these monstrously large datacenters are getting rushed through to be built? Well, I think these two things are linked together. When the AI industry found they can't really find willing customers to buy the AI services they offer, **to the extent that they profit**, now they are turning to capture unwilling customers who can be **forced** to pay: taxpayers. And how is that capture achieved? By the chatcontrol laws. The datacenters will run AI for the governments (controlled by TechBro billionaires), to scan everybody's phones and computers for CSAM (not to mention any and every agenda an authoritarian leader, TechBro billionaire, etc might also want to pursue). Those Datacenters are meant for mass government surveillance, paid for by taxpayers, who will be ostensibly fulfilling the mandate of the Chatcontrol laws.

Here's what I think is cool about being Autistic. The more I study neurotypical people, to try to understand them, the more I see them as employing socialization as a strategy, precisely like any wild animal has an array of strategies for their survival and flourishing. To my mind, a strong majority of Neurotypicals haven't stepped outside a straightforward definition of "success", as (Darwinian) biology would define it: reproductive success, and there are basically no holds barred to get it: at the end of the day it's just about strategies, where honesty is a kind of a dirty word. Truth must serve strategy to them, in order to obtain "success".

To the Autistic, honesty isn't a dirty word; it's a natural state which has its own virtue.

There's a famous meditation teacher named Ajahn Brahm, who was asked what sort of person attained the deepest meditation, the easiest. Ajahn Brahm has instructed and talked to multitudes of meditators, and answered: "Those who are pure-hearted."

I, for one, don't really have faith that some all-singing, all-dancing messaging app can really hope to successfully aggregate a bunch of different chat apps into one place. Each chat system has a ton of their own subtleties and quirks (not to mention, different philosophy and threat model). Modelling these all, with the hope of providing some sort of homogenized experience is extremely tedious.

It's hard enough for one given chat app to get it's own game right, providing a smooth and bug-free experience across all relevant platforms. Each ecosystem continuously evolves and responds to a shifting playing field of politics and ideology, as culture, society, law and sentiment lurches around to the various dramas of the day. Each OS, programming language, and even GUI widget set supported, is also a moving target.

I'm surprised that developers don't get a lot more upset when the OS and widget sets change so often (making enormous burdens for them), often just for the sake of eye candy: adding and removing it, as the fashions shift.

I think there are good-hearted people in this world, and it would be cynical of me to assert they don't exist.

But by and large, I would characterize humanity - broadly speaking - to be sort of like "carnival-goers". All sorts of sketchy things happen at carnivals. The games are rigged by deeply dishonest "carnies", the place is dirty, loud, and vulgar, but damn it, overall it's believed to be fun and worth it (that's "where everyone is"), despite being seedy. So the carnival that came to town still made a ton of money, despite being so seedy. That's what I'd compare Facebook and X to: a carnival that everyone knows is seedy, but people by-and-large tolerate the seediness, if only to have some cheap, low-ball entertainment.

I did a test in #Signal to see how long it takes for a simple "Hello" text message to get from one phone to another. I was holding my own phone and my Dad's phone at the same time. We were both connected by our cellular SIM cards, not wifi. I sent "Hello" and waited. It took 5 minutes for the message to get to my Dad's phone! I tried to do a similar migration to my new phone in #Signal. I must say #Deltachat had the superior experience. Deltachat was willing to sort of "straddle" two phones with one account (see parent toot).

But Signal? It does a transfer of messages to the new phone, then logs out of the old phone. Then my desktop needed to be "re-linked" to the new phone. This "linking" (done with a QR bar code) that Signal can do: it's phone -> Desktop, or phone-> iPad. But not old phone -> new phone (and then you get an ongoing synced "straddling" of one profile).

I got a new phone, and I tried out #Deltachat's "I already have a profile" -> "Add as a Second Device" feature (synced profile from old phone to new phone). It was as simple as scanning a QR code, and both phones were on the same wifi network (where they get many tens of MB/sec). Synced like blazing full powah!

If anyone was wanting a way out from #Discord, and other similar closed-source forums, #Flarum will soon be having their 2.0 release. rc3 just came out. They have good developer and bugfixing momentum right now. If you have Sysadmin skills, and know of an #OpenSource community in need of a new and suitable OpenSource forum, maybe warm up a VPS, and/or register a domain? And perhaps try out their RC on a testing rig first.

Now is a good time to get into flarum, I say. I've been watching them for a long time, and have done multiple #Debian installs myself.

Note: Flarum doesn't do team voice chat, unlike Discord. But it's a great web forum, with good mobile support (unlike #PHPBB) . Is also lightweight (unlike #Discourse) - can be run on a cheap VPS or Raspberry Pi.

tl;dr: *Please don't use Matrix for this purpose*. I also don't like the idea of using a fedigroup - is very publicly visible - as the content shared is sure to be of a sensitive nature. Some degree of discretion and confidentiality is advised (even though its effectively impossible to have some 100% perfect, 100% secure solution).

Longer geeky opinion: Here's how I see the realistic options as they stand (and let's pretend we all care about OpenSource, just like Mastodon cares about Open Source):

1) Wait and see (in 2027 sometime) if Mastodon will successfully add E2EE (End-to-End-Encryption) to the DMs. The proposed encryption protocol, MLS, is claimed to support encryption on an entire group's chat (and this is technically very hard to do right - group chat E2E encryption). The MLS spec is here: https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/rfc9750/

Client support remains to be seen...

2) If you want more of a forum chat, with persisting threads on topics (*which have a title*), unencrypted, I would wait a few more months (~Fall 2026), and do it in a Flarum forum (ver 2.0, once stably released). A ~$5US/month VPS is enough to easily host a large-enough group. Has great mobile support.

3) If you want a group chat *today*, again unencrypted, I would do so in an XMPP "public group chat". "Public group chat" means "is not encrypted". Will have a bit more privacy than a Fedigroup. Again, a ~$5US/month VPS is enough to easily host a large-enough group. Disadvantage: the iPadOS/iOS XMPP clients are not all that mature, so the mobile support suffers in those cases

I've started running my own Luanti/Voxelibre server on a Raspberry Pi. I can join the server from my laptop, but after walking around, alas, there are no other players. I'm considering making it publicly accessible, so more players can join.

Science has everything to do with finding that which is reliable and deterministic, and can be trusted, used as a basis, used as a foundation to build higher, more trust-worthy things. You can't summarize these many methodologies, frameworks, etc down to one word. The Comp Sci profs can extoll these lofty, praiseworthy ideals from the safety of their tenured university positions. Once you actually work in the IT industry, it's much more cut-throat, and short-term oriented. It's about making money as fast as possible, cutting many corners. The #enshittification comes from this. This tension between idealism and brutal pragmatism cannot be dispelled by waving a magic wand and saying any one woo woo word like "compassion".

I've talked to an acquaintance who is a schoolteacher in #HongKong . Their education system is so far advanced that they *already know* who all the autistic kids are in the classrooms by the time they're 6 years old. This friend knows who each autistic kid is already, complete with the training on how to keep an eye out for their special needs. #HongKong has blown the doors off Western education in countries like #Canada, when it comes to #Autism awareness.

Hydrogen peroxide, 5 or 6% dilution, in a spray bottle, is the best chemical to periodically kill that powdery white mold growing on the underside surfaces of all that cheap particle-board furniture you own (which has no finish on the undersides). If you live in a dry climate, *where the humidity always stays below 65%*, you can probably ignore this message. But in humid places (especially the tropics) mold loves worming into that cheap particle board. It's not good for you to inhale the spores (they run down your immune system). Hydrogen peroxide has a knack for likewise wiggling into the mold itself, chasing it inward, exploding all those organic cells in a chain reaction.

As a test: shine a flashlight across the furniture surfaces sideways, and you'll see that frosty powder easily - that's mold!

Once the AI actually crosses the dotted line from lackluster to awesome, it is *then* the doors to the public can be slammed down (to all free and easy usage) and the truly lucrative use cases, as in the OP, will be held private. Everyone will be played for suckers, who provided that free AI-training labour.

Congrats on the release! Anytime a Linux GUI app gets more beautiful, that means a great deal to all the non-geeky users of the world, where aesthetics and convenience are king. I just hope it stops short of getting bloated and slow - witness the sluggish Node.js horror show that the #Signal desktop client is, in #Linux.
