thanks! Yes, we costed those options, but struggled to find anything that was still open by the time we were done with the other things we had to do. Navigating Kuantan traffic turned out to be quite challenging, also. Ended up getting some rojak with sweet chili sauce, which was quite alright. Restaurant guy wants y’all to know that he doesn’t do nasi lemak. Also if I come back tomorrow, there won’t be nasi lemak. Just had a slightly awkward food experience. Two of my friends are fasting, so we went to a restaurant at the right time, so they could eat. Unfortunately, the restaurant didn’t serve vegetarian food during Ramadan, so I felt very ang moh being the only one not eating while everybody dug in lol. We’re now looking for a convenience store. Hope to find something there, b/c that cendol was almost 7 hours ago 😁

I take dance classes a few times a week. I always wear a KF94 mask. I know it isn’t perfect, but those are the ones that fit my face best and, at least from my experience so far, they seem to sufficiently protect me against germs from people who are pre- or a-symptomatic. However: I have the rule that if somebody tells me that they are sick, I leave. Today was such a day. I arrived, talked to someone, and a few minutes into the conversation they volunteered that they are sick, so I got dressed and left again.

I know there’s worse things in the world, but I’m still annoyed. Especially because of the attitude that I get when I explain this. People tell me that I don’t have to apologise for my behaviour. I mean… I wasn’t planning to. So I just say nothing and leave, but it feels really shitty.

I know that people also censor any photos and videos taken at events. As in: if I’m in it, they don’t upload them, because I don’t look “gezellig” enough. I don’t mind that pics and vids of me aren’t shared publicly, but the reason pisses me off.

I feel like a re-introduction is long overdue!

My name is Anna, and I'm an assistant professor in Algorithmics at the Delft University of Technology, specialising in combinatorial optimisation, symbolic AI, constraint programming, propositional model counting, operations research and reasoning under uncertainty.

I'm a nerd, a feminist and a traveller, not always in that order.

I am that person who then tries to find the sources of the original information, then reads academic papers to gauge if the "headlines" that are shared can actually backed up by proper science.

In this process, I often find myself uttering the words "I hate to be this person again, but... *in mice*. They did *one* small study with *mice* and found an effect *in mice*."

While we're on the subject of recommending Malaysian restaurants in the UK: Suissi Vegan Kitchen (https://maps.app.goo.gl/MpitddKsHazHUR237) in Glasgow is excellent!

We shared a starter of achar, which was super fresh and hit a good spice level, and XO sauce carrot cake, which was just perfection on a plate: super soft and tender cubes of carrot cake, charred to perfection on all sides.

For my main I had vegan laksa, and while it wasn't as good as the vegetarian laksa I used to get at Marina Square, it was comforting and rich. My friend had Cantonese crispy noodles, and aside from him wanting to have little bit more broth with it, it was perfect: crispy and flavourful. We shared some pisang goreng for desert, and that was very tasty as well.

Staff was super friendly and helpful!

Can thoroughly recommend, but would suggest that you make a reservation.

I had a blast in London, feasting on laksa (so excited that I forgot to take a pic), hot teh tarik, prata planta with condensed milk, vegan nasi lemak, vegetarian char kway teow, kueh bingka ubi kayu, kueh salat and kueh dadar.

I couldn't go to all the restaurants that I wanted to visit because they weren't all open and I had very limited time, but I was very happy to at least go to Roti King at Euston station (https://maps.app.goo.gl/PGap2APC3JCxYcLh8), Rasa Sayang in China Town (https://maps.app.goo.gl/hMQxjYhDqNPbuGmU8) and Makan Cafe at Portobello Road (https://maps.app.goo.gl/6jfayYo8mXCaQZsj9). Would definitely recommend all of these places!

Roti King's prata was super crispy and indulgent, Rasa Sayang's nasi lemak was good, but I probably would order something else next time because I missed the crispy fried tempeh that I'm used to getting with vegetarian nasi lemak, and personally don't much like the vermicelli in the sayur lodeh. Their food tasted delicious, though, and I really liked their kueh bingka ubi kayu. Will definitely return to Makan Cafe. They have a great vegetarian selection, but I found out too late that I could've ordered sambal or chili on the side, and I want to try their nasi campur. Their kueh salat was super fresh, tender and delicious.

Aan alle Nederlanders die ook naar Wie is de Mol? kijken: ik was afgelopen April ook in Siem Reap, en was natuurlijk ook diep onder de indruk van Angkor Wat.

Wat ook indruk maakte: het Apopo Visitor's center. Cambodia ligt vol met onontplofte bommen en mijnen, die nog elke week slachtoffers maken. Cambodia is dan ook een van de landen met het hoogste percentage mensen die één of meerdere ledematen missen.

APOPO traint ratten ("Hero Rats") om onontplofte explosieven te detecteren. Mensen en honden zijn te zwaar, maar ratten zijn licht genoeg om de explosieven niet te activeren bij het speuren.

De ratten werken max 6 dagen per week en max 90 minuten per dag, in de ochtend, als het nog relatief koel is.

Toen ik daar was, was APOPO al zo'n 20 jaar in Cambodja actief. Ik vroeg hoeveel explosieven ze in die tijd onschadelijk hadden gemaakt: zo'n 90 000 (als ik het me goed herinner). Toen vroeg ik hoeveel er naar schatting nog opgeruimd moeten worden? Nog zo'n 2 miljoen(!)

Ze kunnen dus nog wel wat hulp gebruiken. Ik heb gedoneerd.

My Malaysian friend also recommended Rasa Sayang, so that one is high up my list now. Cannot believe I missed Normah's! They have vegan laksa *and* vegan nasi lemak! Somehow also missed Laksamania, but they also have vegan laksa and serve cendol!

I read all Discworld novels and some of the other Pratchett books. From Gaiman I only read American Gods. It was a pageturner for me, but I found that it did have "white man writing about cultures and religions that aren't his own" vibes, and the way he portrayed women in that book rubbed me the wrong way, so I never read any more of his work. Still, I don't like Good Omens to be tainted in this way. Thank goodness for David & Michael.

I understand what the words mean. I just have never before seen "sudah" and "belum" used together in this particular way.

I can construct sentences that are syntactically and semantically correct, but that doesn't mean that those sentences are actually *used* in (vernacular) Bahasa Indonesia.

I am just trying to figure out if there is a specific grammatical reason or cultural reason or "nuanced meaning" reason for phrasing the question in this particular way.

Like, if I say "Bon kami sudah terbayar?", is it correct but not often used? Is it rude or culturally wrong? Is it perfectly fine? And same questions for if I say "Bon kami sudah terbayar atau belum?"

I know that Bahasa Indonesia is a very context-dependent language, and that details are often omitted if those details can reasonably be inferred from context or if they don't matter. This is tricky while learning, because you have to interpret the context correctly in order to understand the meaning, and the way in which phrases are presented to you in textbooks is often without much context. That's why I am having a lot of questions about the actual use of the language.

In this particular case, I am surprised to find both "sudah" and "belum" in the same sentence, since the presence of one eliminates the need of the presence of the other. Hence, I would suspect that there is a particular reason to emphasize both options in this sentence. That would suggest some cultural reason behind it, and it would still leave me confused about the sentence structure.

I am just trying to understand if this sentence reflects a particular *rule* of the language, or rather a custom in the *use* of the language.

Is it to say “or not yet” or something? Or is it just an idiomatic phrase? Would the sentence be correct without “belum” at the end? I’ve been searching online, but I haven’t yet found a satisfactory answer.
