What I do for push-ups and bench press is that I usually take Wednesday of and then also Friday and Saturday.

On Sunday I do 3-4 heave sets bench press where I go all out on at least one of them.

The rest of the week I only do 3 sets with 8 reps on 70% of my 1 reps max.

This program have so far been my best for gaining strength so far.

That is why I had to find something similar for chin-ups.
