Before the age of Starlink size satellite fleets (which are below the van Allen belts anyway), radiation hardened CPUs fell into the last of these four categories:

* Zero cost like microcontrollers
* Zero time to perform tasks
* Zero power like mobile and IoT today
* Zero units including military stuff

As long as the max power draw isn't really high, and waste heat is generally useful for outer system stuff, I don't see any reason not to make such CPUs generally capable. Closer to the zero time set, while of course they're zero units, I remember a typical prices of $100K each which is cheap for their types of missions.

From the replies I got to this post, some of y'all need a tutorial in the diagnosis and management of blunt trauma injuries. While I'm not a doctor, this is something I know a bit about from both book study and some grim personal experience.

So. Jonathan Ross got hit by a 2-ton SUV traveling at low speed. We know it was low speed, because if it weren't, he would be dead and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The effect of that kind of collision is a lot like being whanged by an oversized baseball bat. This is not trivial shit, not just "bruising"....

Yes, you can be ambulatory after that, and he was, but this is a category of injury that can and not infrequently does kill you later even if adrenaline powers you through the prompt effects.

The problem is that the damage from internal bleeding is cumulative, subtle, and hard to diagnose from the outside unless you get really obvious symptoms like blood in your stool. I nearly died from this once myself, which is how I know about this.

So he went straight to the emergency room. Standard protocol is to put him under close observation and do some diagnostic imaging. If he's bleeding badly enough to have trouble standing, it's surgery time - you need to go in, find the bleeders and repair them.

Fortunately Ross wasn't injured that badly. But don't make any mistake about this, anytime you have viscera injury you were only a few pounds of applied force from death. It's plain blind luck that [driver] Good didn't kill him.

You don't want to surgically intervene if you don't have to, because the trauma from the surgery can be as bad or worse than the injury. So you keep him under observation for a while and then you send him home with instructions to self-monitor for indications that the internal bleeding has become serious. Indications: blood in the stool, bloating, persistent abdominal pain.

If he survives 48 hours without increased symptoms, he'll probably be okay and no further treatment required. I think this period is already past us. But believe me, he's going to be under instructions to take it easy and not stress the bleeders for at least a week.

I'm not aware of any vaguely recent incidents where whites attacked in their homes who engaged in legit self-defense against negroes were charged.

The item implies the incident went beyond that to finishing the attackers off, which is illegal and a very bad idea outside of Texas, where there's a unique for states grand jury system that just might choose to no bill you, like happened with that restaurant incident.

They got bought out by Schneider Electric in 2007 and now they don't care about build quality. For example I've seen reviews of their new LiFePO rackmount line where people complain the front panel screws, holes in panel and/or device are messed up..... Someone also did a tear down of I forget which model, perhaps higher end, and the workmanship in the transformer connections was _awful_.

Bought a new 750VA Smart-UPS almost two years ago after my previous had used up two (lead acid) batteries (which is when you start to doubt the further longevity of the rest of it) and now one extra feature or warranty thing?? is cloud based.... :saddest:

The battery or some settings/behavior managing it are wonky, after the _slightest_ hit it starts a minutes long battery charging cycle reported per the USB connection.

That said, the above annoyances aside, it actually works without flaw, including the battery recovering from at least one recent long-ish outage that discharged it a fair amount. And none going back to before their century have ever set my house on fire, which is my biggest concern with UPSs, especially consumer grade which also don't deliver sine wave power.

See the British guy who walking away from his (very rare I think) computer came to the sudden realization he would be spending a great deal of the rest of his life fixing code bugs, including his own.

More fruitful would be for example the CASE era, per Wikipedia and my vague memory "CASE tools were at their peak in the early 1990s. According to the PC Magazine of January 1990, over 100 companies were offering nearly 200 different CASE tools." (The real action where I was in those days was with PCs that had become seriously capable with 386 and 486 CPUs and Windows 3.0 and beyond.)
