      On the subject of looking for a new job: &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I&amp;#39;m VERY put off by fedihire posts which go like &amp;#34;I want to do X (X usually being Rust) but I would EVEN do Y which I haven&amp;#39;t done in 20 years ha ha&amp;#34; (Y usually being PHP or Java).&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Are people actually still thinking this is a cool and acceptable attitude to belittle PHP (or Java or MySQL or..)?? &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;This makes me so SO angry because we ARE DOING IT TO EACH OTHER. Like the software industry as a whole doesn&amp;#39;t have enough problems already...

      I&amp;#39;ve also changed my mind what I advise &amp;#34;beginners&amp;#34;: &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt; I&amp;#39;ve realized that - looking at the (partially really smart) shell usage of harnesses/LLMs -  I&amp;#39;m back favoring the old hardcore sysadmin of olden days approach: learn the technology up and down, the applications, learn one programming language really well (maybe even still C?) but most importantly: get really really good at &amp;#34;shell&amp;#34; and you&amp;#39;ll still beat the LLM usage of your coworkers BY FAR&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;with the modern addition of e.g. jq

      So I&amp;#39;ve had two tiny mini micro successes with teaching to use LLMs much less in the sense of &amp;#34;only once instead of repeatedly&amp;#34; basically by teaching a mix of &amp;#34;automation - so useful!&amp;#34; and Alan Keys idea of writing more DSLs per project (which easily translates into Shell or Python scripts)&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I couldn&amp;#39;t convince any of the juniors however to really dig into shell scripting and spent the effort on learning it for real. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;To them, it&amp;#39;s like argueing that learning Latin from the ground up is useful.

      imagine a different trajectory of LLMs like in support of science and with radical opt-in for all the training materials and using green data centers all the way and first have invested into local and small models and just a pinch of better critical thinking and god forbid maybe even international collaboration and just skipping repeating history...&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;this is a choice we didn&amp;#39;t make and I&amp;#39;m sure the reason is the distinct anti-science and anti-intellectual direction countries are taking

      set aside programming and local tasks like movie watching I&amp;#39;ve moved everything onto &amp;#34;web&amp;#34; since 1995 when I wrote letters to my landlord in HTML formatted in TABLE and printed from the browser.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I 1000% declare &amp;#34;the web&amp;#34; a) my home, b) open  and c) simple and for everybody because &amp;#34;a website&amp;#34; (&amp;#34;homepage&amp;#34;) is still doable by hand in 15 minutes to publish information and LINK to other information so it turns into &amp;#34;a web&amp;#34;.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The web is imho one of the most versatile things we have.
