When you spend almost 2 weeks unsuccessfully searching for a particular animal an image like this - the suspense of her emergence from the shadows, the partially obscured eye, the glints of hallelujah gold on her coat - all express the nature of the beast so much better than the "better" images where she is out in the open. Woodland Kingfisher. We could hear these guys calling to their mates at almost every bit of woodland adjacent to water, but they seldom came down to eye level. This pair was very agitated at the presence of a a large monitor snoozing in the bush and they came down to yell at it - and lucky for us - do a bit of displaying as well. #birds #birdphotography

I've seen bee-eaters "tossing" their prey before - but I've never managed to capture it in mid-flight! This is the same sequence as my previous photo, but now the bird quickly flicks the grass hopper into the air, catches it headfirst and swallowed it - all whilst still flying! #birds #birdphotography

We were watching a pack of wild dogs laze around on the airstrip. Something triggered the chief hunters instincts and he immediately went into stalk mode. He wasn't serious - as you can see from the full belly and the remnant blood staining on his ruff from breakfast and soon flopped back into sleep mode with his friends. #wildlife #africa #photography #naturephotography

The good ole "bin chicken" aka Australian White Ibis. There are hundreds of them around at the moment - all jockeying for nesting spots. I won't pretend they're an attractive bird - and the sounds and smells they make are even less so. But they are interesting to watch. The pink on the back of the head is normal and I think something to do with breeding colours. #birds #birdphotography

We have Standard Bin Chickens (Australian White Ibis), Fancy Bin Chickens (Straw Necked Ibis) and my favourite - the Disco Bin Chicken (Glossy Ibis). Of course this is merely my terminology and the rest of the world is being painfully slow in catching on....

The weather was wrong, the time of day was wrong. I really shouldn't have bothered going at all. then this happed! Little Eagle lovely and close (this is a genuinely wild bird!) and even at times at eye level. I first thought it must be in poor health but it flew off and returned twice and fought off several magpies, a whistling kite and a Willy Wagtail so nice and healthy. #birds #birdphotography

Whoops - I just accidentally deleted my previous post of this - so here it is again. These are Red Tailed Black Cockatoos which are currently desperately searching for food in suburbia (as so many of the native trees they historically relied on have been cleared). These were feeding at my neighbours. They're so vulnerable on the ground (and road!) but it is lovely to see how many people stop to watch them. #birds #birdphotography
