the best thing you can do to keep obsolescence out of your life is to never run discs, never run hydraulics. Pretty much anything 1975-2005 can be made to work, somehow. It's going to be rolling windows of five years of compatibility from 2010 out to forever.

The only disadvantage to #XMPP right now is that the iOS clients are kind of wonky, which in your case doesn't really matter. The #Conversations client as found in F-Droid is excellent, The console #Profanity client is good, #Dino on the desktop worked well enough for the five minutes I checked it out.
