if i only ever need at most the next byte after the current buffer ... simply read that byte back to the start! and then it's also ready to go as the "current" char in the next loop of fread :3
the trick that was throwing me off was that i need to loop over `numRead + 1` bytes (because of that extra byte at the start), and that rollover variable for if i increment `i` right at the end of a buffer (used for character escaping)

the `fread`s! the little rollover variable!
i had a comment i wrote myself from last night saying "please just go with the two banks!" (a la devine's modal implementation), i'm glad i didn't, this is very fun :>

i don't do lookaheads actually, but even incrementing is kinda tricky? - to check if i need to do a new buffer read *every time* i increment the pointer for the current character?? yeesh ..
