This makes it a fantastic church model if all you care about is butts in seats, money in the coffer, and a kind of ego-boost that comes with preaching to big crowds. Rehoboam, Solomon&#39;s son, lost the northern ten tribes after dismissing the wise man who told him to lighten the tax burden. Ahab&#39;s taste for conflict led to the plot to murder Naboth and the resulting Divine sentence of judgment against Ahab&#39;s line. The prophets urged and begged the children of Judah to be peaceful in the face of Exile: they were ignored, and various jewish revolts began, with fruitless bloodshed being the result. After the conquest of Canaan, it seems the only wars and conflicts that God blessed were the ones that were either a last resort or something resulting from grave moral emergencies (e.g., the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem).<br/><br/>So the Scriptural witness is that Christians love peace for its own sake... and fools love conflict for its own sake. Yet the believer *should* be ready to engage in conflict in case it cannot be avoided. If we forget that, then passages like this one end up sounding like a VERY naïve interpretation of monarchism. <br/><br/>Solomon is not positing a medieval monarchism fanaticism, as though he were saying &#34;Oh, but kings never do wrong! Kings are all Godly! They are the closest to God in a society!&#34; Perish the thought. To the contrary, he is telling his son Rehoboam what sort of man he must be when he takes the throne of Israel. It is an exhortation that says he must rule in righteousness, or God may well take him off of that throne.<br/><br/>It is simple: Solomon here advises rulers (especially his son) to love truth, to love righteousness, to have wrath against wrongdoers and to provide blessings for the people. If a king does not do these things, then he may wear the crown but God may not consider the man to be a king anymore...and that means the throne could be handed to someone else. <br/><br/>There is a certain irony to this, since Rehoboam started out as a foolish, hard-headed king. The message did not stick with Solomon&#39;s son at first, and it took some hard knocks to get him back on track. Rehoboam&#39;s pig headed refusal to listen to the needs of the people (that is, being a blessing to them) cost him the northern ten tribes and all of their territory. Solomon often daisy chains two or three together to expand our understanding of the topic. <br/><br/>Here, the poor are first observed as annoying or disliked by their neighbors, while the opposite is true for the rich. And no wonder! The poor man is needy, while the rich man has something to give. The poor man might have bad habits or make unwise choices, while the rich man seems much more stable. <br/><br/>If that was all Solomon said, we might be left thinking that it is wiser to keep company with rich people. After all, it would make life more pleasant, we would have better opportunities to accrue our own wealth, and higher quality friends. But then he gives us another proverb that chastises such thinking. The poor are not disliked because they are unstable, unwise, or dirty; they are disliked because their neighbors who dislike them are selfish sinners. He follows this up by saying the generous are blessed, in connection with the rest of this passage.<br/><br/>The generous man is blessed, because he does not despise the poor. He moves past his normal sinful instinct towards partiality and contempt, and shows compassion on those less fortunate. We have to confront the destruction of the married estate, the whelping of children, and the self-denigration of men and women as they begin to see themselves as little more than pleasure-meat for others to enjoy. <br/><br/>But people still do it. They see the consequences of sexual sin every day, but still engage in it. Why would they listen to Solomon? Heck, even theologians sometimes don&#39;t listen, like karl barth - who tormented his wife by having his mistress live with them. <br/><br/>I think the cause of this abject failure is that we have been seeing Solomon&#39;s wisdom as mere counsel. Solomon tells us it is a matter of life or death; you don&#39;t argue with your passions, you flee temptation when you can&#39;t force them to obey your will. But the Church began to see this as a matter of mere advice, as though Solomon were telling us that by human reason, merely knowing the consequences, would stop it. What a dour mistake we made. Sexual urges are not a matter of arguments; you cannot defeat your lust with facts and logic. With real wisdom, one acts. Truth be told, it is that way with all matters of wisdom.
