I hope so. But maybe it's just a matter of time? I certainly wouldn't want to travel to the US right now, even as a European, even if the passport isn't an issue. Pretty fucked up how everything is getting more and more invasive

As an autistic kid I often felt (or the idea was put in my head) like I was an alien from another planet. As an adult I increasingly feel like I'm actually one of the few humans stranded on a planet full of alien monsters.
I just heard a Danish politician proudly declare that he doesn't see any problem with sending Iranian refugees back to Iran during a fucking war & I just don't understand how these people can look themselves in the mirror. How don't they flee in horror from their own image?

Stumbled upon two new vegan products from the Danish brand Naturli': smoked salmon and shrimp. The shrimp are a bit chewier than I remember shrimp being, but otherwise both are pretty great!
It’s a shame a lot of these products don’t seem to sell very well around here. People should give them a chance.

On NixOS is there any way to
1. Figure out which version of a package is currently being used.
2. Configure the system to ignore any updates to that package and use that version going forward.
I'm thinking specifically of the AMD graphics driver, a recent update of which is apparently causing issues for me. I'd like to roll that back to the previous version, and only that.

That it's not real (even though my story is set in "our world").
I love fantasy — dragons, werewolves, magic, ghosts, gods, etc — and I love it exactly because none of it is real. I think that's what makes it so wonderful, and it's why I find religion and superstition so depressing, because it doesn't just diminish the wonders and beauty of the real world, it also diminishes the fantasy by making it something ... common.

Alas, notice the careful wording: "Tomorrow we will dispatch a naval vessel from Cartagena with all necessary resources in case it was necessary to assist the flotilla and carry out a rescue operation."
They foresee that Israel will sink the flotilla and that the people on board will need rescuing. It doesn't sound like they're actually going to defend the flotilla.

All these people falling over themselves to praise Charlie Kirk worry me way more than whoever killed him. It's not a great sign when we can't condemn a man like Kirk.
If we want political violence to end, we *must* be able to condemn people like Charlie Kirk long before it comes to violence. People who are openly proud of their lack of empathy and who work hard to spread hatred of others belong in psychiatric care or prison, not at the head of political organizations.

Currently reading the diary of Anne Frank, and from the first pages it's hard not to fall in love with her sassy attitude and personality. Knowing that she doesn't survive, and reading what she had to live through is truly heart-wrenching and tragic.
And then you think of all the Palestinian Annes who we'll probably never hear about, because unlike Nazi Germany no one is doing anything to stop Israel from turning Gaza to ashes.

The incessant push to make us all verify our identities everywhere online makes me so fucking tired. I feel like I'm being pushed towards the digital equivalent of living in a shed in the woods, just to retain some remnant of the free & open internet we were promised.

I set services.printing.enable = true and now it can *find* the printer, but it says it can't find a driver.
A search suggested this:
services.avahi = {
enable=true;
nssmdns=true;
openFirewall=true;
};
but if I understand correctly that's only for networked printers, and I do not want to connect my printer to a network.
I'm used to plugging things in with USB and having them just work, which they usually do on other distros, but apparently not NixOS.

I bought a big fancy printer (Brother HL-L8260CDW) but I can't get it to work.
I first tried with AirPrint because that seemed the simplest, but it turns out the printer needs to be connected to WiFi for that and I DO NOT WANT my printer connected to the internet. I mistakenly thought AirPrint surely worked via Bluetooth, but alas no.
So then I connected it with USB to my PC, but NixOS can't seem to find a driver for it. Anyone able to help?

And as you say, Lego is especially disappointing in light of the Greenland situation. The number of genuinely caring companies who will stand by their values seems disappointingly low.

Anyone know what's going on? Occasionally when I start Firefox or Thunderbird (both snaps under Kubuntu) they fail to start. Been happening for a long time but seems to happen at random, & always with these messages "... is not a snap cgroup" & "Unable to assign [undefined] to QString".
Searching for the cgroup message suggests it's to do with running a VPS, but I'm not running a VPS. The other message seems too common to be helpful & might be unrelated.

My concern was that if Mastodon was its own server I'd have to run two servers in parallel, but since that's not the case, the question is a bit moot.
I'm so used to Apache+PHP+MySQL that in my little world nothing else exists 🤣 Although I do currently deploy to MariaDB, but since they're 99% compatible I've never had to bother enough with the differences to switch to MariaDB locally.

I see that the default/suggested setup for Mastodon involves Nginx ... for some reason I had convinced myself that Mastodon was its own server. I guess that means there's no particular reason I couldn't just run Mastodon on Apache instead.

Say I wanted to host a handful of small personal websites and a small personal Mastodon instance, could I do so on a single server?
That is, this one server would have to run (at a minimum) Apache, PHP, MySQL, and whatever Mastodon needs.
Is it possible? Is it advisable? Or is this a terrible, awful, no-good idea? #LazyWeb
