My big nemesis in starting seeds is always "damping off."

I'll try to take all the precautions this year! Sterilizing the soil and planter trays, watering from below and keeping a good airflow.

Damping off is apparently a kind of amalgam of various fungal afflictions. I've seen lots of claimed remedy products, but I've long suspected they were all placebo products that keep you busy while your seedlings all die.

Canadian cooking is kind of in the middle between UK and US. We use grams and ml, but also cups and spoons.

I personally don't use lbs and ounces at all, but I know some still do here.

Our packaging is pretty helpful. The butter for example has us covered in g, ml and cups, English and French.

Last year, as we started to modify our new-to-us yard, I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I found an Empire apple tree to plant – my favourite variety of apple!

That was early summer and it grew well all season.

But with autumn I somehow forgot that animals like to nibble. Late january the rabbits suddenly chewed the tree to half its size! Then they started stripping the bark off the lower part!

A #kefir batch completed nicely today. That's seven or eight batches since I started, and I seem to average around ten days between them.

Good results each time now. It works most nicely when the days are cooler, then the cultured grains seem to be at their happiest.

We lost our first pumpkin to the critters–it would've been nice and big by now. We've got lots of small ones though, from marble to grapefruit sized. They're wrapped in chicken wire now. The plant just keeps chunking out the flowers, it's pretty amazing.

I suppose even without viable ripened pumpkins this autumn, the flower display has been really nice.

Thought I'd plant a few tomato plants in the new raised beds I made this spring. Well – I over planted. I did stake and tie the plants early on, but they really went nuts, so are a bit of a tangle. Still, they're healthy and producing well.

Plus I think some of our plants were mislabeled as we have way more cherry tomatoes than we were supposed to have, and no sign of the "Early Girl" variety that should've been in the centre.

I have lotsa #DewaltTools which I've found to be decent. Some are 25+ yrs old. Last winter I needed to replace some batteries so decided to move to try a new ecosystem. I ended up staying w #Dewalt, and their 20V lithium batts.

One of the tools I acquired was a drill that had been fine, but recently become annoying. It spontaneously switches direction! What a hassle. You think you're removing a screw then it decides to go the other direction! Yikes!

Let's see how their #customerService is!

Interestingly we're didn't taste much in the way of licorice in the product, but it's reasonably tasty.

Reading ingredients, it doesn't mention any actual licorice in the licorice swirl part, but does say "natural flavour" and "carbon black." lol

The natural flavour could be licorice extract, but you taste almost nothing of it. I think it's mostly just colour to hint at the idea of licorice. That might make it more appealing to young people who never developed an affinity for the flavour?

Rather had an urge for one of those tiger-swirl things with licorice in it, but alas they didn't have that.

My second choice was something peanut buttery and they had a chocolate PB thing with a nice cocoa-y chocolate and salty hard PB lumps which wasn't too bad.

Heading home across the park there was a #skunk in the failing light. Slightly different timing and we may have got to know him really well.

A morning spent shovelling clay-rich soil that has hardened to almost pavement without rain for so long.

I'm lowering the grade a bit and putting some foundation gravel & stone dust down for a flagstone path at the base of some stairs. Trying to manage the angles and ensure water runs away and doesn't pool.

It's hot - got an umbrella over my work area to stop from getting heat stress. Think I'll stay inside for the afternoon.

As well, the #pumpkins keep flowering but I suspect it's too late to form anything substantial in the fruit department. (See earlier post about our varmint-munched pumpkins).

There are a few marble-sized ones only, and the flowers are keeping the bees happy still.
