It's also been brought to my attention that the German government supports RFC 9580 (thereby rejecting LibrePGP), so actually it doesn't really seem to matter. https://lwn.net/Articles/1074146/

While GnuPG 2.5.x implements hybrid PQC encryption based on ML-KEM, just like https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-openpgp-pqc/, GnuPG's implementation is entirely incompatible with the IETF-specified format, which all other libraries are implementing.
Both serialization and the KEM combiners differ.

The bottom line is that anyone who wants to use vendor-agnostic PQC with OpenPGP should *avoid GnuPG's PQC key formats*.

I also have this issue with libertarianism, which should describe a useful political position about liberty from government abuses independently from your views on economic policies, but now just makes you sound like a gun toting nut. This makes it harder to defend against the narrative that everyone on the left is rooting for some authoritarian communist society.

The same goes for many internet memes and sayings that were once universally used, e.g. Pepe the Frog. It is no wonder members of younger generations keep falling to the alt-right, when the right is co-opting all the things they enjoy, and everyone else not only lets them, but actively works to make those popular things be seen as hateful. In this example, the popular idea that Pepe the Frog is a hate symbol stems almost entirely from some uninformed, reactionary article the Clinton campaign posted to try and smear Trump, then got the media to repeat forever.

They can be pissed at me forever for once working with Techlore too. Even though *he* once published *my* private DMs out of context and with misleading/false context (which does make the whole “they’re private” argument a whole lot less weak in my mind), I don’t really care.

I’m just saying that now that the messages are out, it’s clear to most people that they were out of line. Should they have been shared at all? Probably not, but my point is that *if they are serious* about actually wanting to make amends they have to take *some* responsibility for their actions and meet people halfway.

If they can’t do that then their statements about being willing to forgive seem hollow. All parties involved need to forgive *each other* and not pretend like one party is above everyone else.

It’s interesting, because in the thread I just linked to they said they were mad at Rossmann for streaming “someone who had just been […] swatted,” so they do recognize that their messages to Rossmann were out of the norm, given the whole situation going on. Yet I’ve never seen anyone at GOS ever go “hey I shouldn’t have messaged you like that, it was a crazy month, let’s figure this out” 🤷‍♂️

[Apparently](https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/116302200980197011 ), GrapheneOS is "offering forgiveness" to people they are in conflict with.

A few weeks ago I let them know I would be willing to accept if they were willing to remove the many lies and personal attacks they've posted about me over the years, and I provided a short list of a few examples to make it easier for them.

I have not heard back since, but I'm hopeful they will follow through on their efforts to mend our relationship 🙂

Cisco’s sitting pretty. They were responsible for the last major Chinese attack on the USA by not issuing security updates for faulty products they sold, but that’s ignored in favor of hurting consumers and the Chinese boogeyman.

Security updates should be like vehicle recalls. Some NHTSA-equivalent agency should make corporations issue updates until the products they sell are safe to use. The move fast and break things mentality in tech is broken.

I can tell you that the main point is that we should get along with people with differences in opinion *on privacy* (or the best way to be private, etc). For one example, we often see privacy-focused companies take down their competitors in this space, instead of “punching up” (collectively) towards Big Tech.

actually I'm a little bit off when I double-checked my memory: it's every 2016 blocks, not precisely every 2 weeks. So if nobody mines the next 2,016 blocks, it could take much longer than 2 weeks for the difficulty to be adjusted downwards.

But once 2,016 blocks are eventually mined, then the difficulty will be adjusted downwards, and the amount it is adjusted downward is exactly proportional to how long those last 2,016 blocks took to mine.

Apparently in July 2021 blocks took 20-120 minutes to mine instead of 10, after China cracked down on mining. Once those 2,016 blocks went through though, the difficulty dropped by 28%.

The initial block rewards you can get now are only meant to be a subsidy for miners to kickstart the network, but Bitcoin's ideal world ends up with transaction fees covering everything, yes.

And I believe you are correct about mining prices decreasing as the number of miners decreases too, so it would be self-sustainable economically in that sense too.

Etsy also makes the product description hard to find and discourages reading it IMO. Maybe you need to add a tacky "🍁 Made in Canada 🇺🇸 No Tariffs for Americans!" badge to the first product image or something if you really want people to notice this. So, I helped Britt out with moving her instance to a new server provider this week.

While the people at toot.io were relatively helpful in our email chain (once she was finally able to get a hold of them in the first place anyways), the setup at toot.io was a bit strange and not optimized for an instance of her size. The actual server itself was well *over*powered for her to be seeing the slowdowns she was, and Mastodon & especially Postgres just weren’t using those resources to a full extent.

Honestly the biggest red flag 🚩🚩🚩 to me isn’t what toot.io is doing now necessarily, but that it was apparently sold(?) to completely new management without notice to customers. In a niche service industry like this, that seems like a big problem to me.

The previous ownership is probably more at fault for this relatively speaking, but it’s probably a good opportunity for toot.io customers to reevaluate their hosting options… Even if you ultimately end up sticking with toot.io, you simply might not be fully aware of what’s going on over at your own hosting company anymore, and that’s always worth double-checking 👀

I’ve had a terrible experience since they were sold by the original owner and I plan to move our instance to a new host asap.

Unresolved slowdowns. Lack of replies from support. Unnecessary hurdles to get them to respond. Unending hours of stress.

Em dashes with spaces seems superfluous to me in all cases though.

I have double your active users running on under 30 direct postgres connections most of the time. WEB_CONCURRENCY=24 and MAX_THREADS=15 (this is specific to my 44 CPU core count, don't overdo it...)

This might be over-explaining, but this is my setup:

1. You need to install pgBouncer https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/scaling/#pgbouncer

I have max_client_conn = 10000 and default_pool_size = 30 and reserve_pool_size = 120 set in pgbouncer.ini

This allows practically unlimited connections from Mastodon, but only 30 will be opened with postgres. It will scale up to 150 if absolutely required but that very rarely ever happens.

2. You should set max connections in Postgres itself to 300 and check https://pgtune.leopard.in.ua again.

Use OLTP instead of Web as the DB type. If your DB is on the same server as Mastodon don't just enter your total core count and RAM, enter only what you want dedicated to Postgres (so... probably about half).

Some settings depend on what max connections is, so if you ran pgTune before and then increased it they're probably wrong, best to double-check them all.

3. Profit

Whereas it is literally completely impossible to become a DNS authority unless you are a mega corp. The difference is significant.

It’s so annoying that they basically hand out IP addresses if you want them, but if you want your own TLD in DNS it’s gonna cost you like a million+ bucks.

ICANN is a shitty company anyways, between removing their price cap on .org domains to sell it to private equity, and giving the .amazon TLD to Amazon the company after 7 years of dispute, instead of Amazon *the region that makes up half of South America.*

So I wouldn’t want to give them a dime anyways, but weren’t there any DNS nerds in the 80s & 90s who could’ve stopped this corporate nonsense?
