I hope someone can point you to better advice than this, but I had something similar happen to me, and my takeaway from the experience is, be politely non compliant with anyone claiming to want to talk with me who is *already recording.* A sincerely interested would-be journalist should ask for consent first before recording you.

There are multiple ways to approach this, but I do not recommend DIY because it doesn’t last as long and the chemical is toxic to cats until dry. Getting your clothes treated professionally is cheap, like $10 per item.

If your budget is tiny, get permethrin-treated socks, tuck in your pants, and use DEET on skin and clothes. 2/2

The avoidance advice here is solid. I would argue with the list of effective natural repellants — not because they aren’t somewhat effective, but because they simply aren’t effective enough. So long as DEET and permethrin are available, I’d prefer them as more effective.

Caveats: DEET is sometimes sold in stupidly high concentrations, like 98 percent. That’s way too much for your skin. 20-30 percent is adequate for a day outside. I still try to minimize DEET … 1/2

All good suggestions! I would also add, however, that you should limit the amounts you collect to just a few. People tend to underestimate their impact. Also, don’t collect seed too early. If it’s fully mature, it will come off the plant quite easily.

If a species is well suited to your property, it will flower and set seed for you (may take a few years) and you can collect all you want from those plants!

Megan Lynch (she/her) (npub1fn5…2e3g) 's thread about Carob -- and discussion of other trees that are also legumes, like Redbud, Cercis canadensis -- sent me down a fun #botany rabbit hole about another tree in that category, Black Locust, Robinia pseudoacacia. I've always loved to eat its flowers raw off the tree, but could the pods also be edible? Maybe.

My sister is ok but weak. My dad (89) tested positive for 3 days but is neg now and never had symptoms.

Pawpaw news! Here you see the first harvest of a Pawpaw tree (North America’s largest native fruit) I planted almost a decade ago.

Sitting in the bowl, they were almost *overpoweringly* aromatic, and the scent was sweet. Processed, they yielded three cups of pulp and a lot of seeds. The pulp went into two loaves of sweetbread.

And that’s it for this year!

Visiting for the first time and I'm not sure whether you'd like to see any US wildflowers. I have four lovely wetlands blooms from last week cued up and ready if you'd like to see them.

Pleasingly cool in the summer heat, too.

You are making me wonder whether winter sowing (which I’ve only done with wildflower seeds) might work for beans.

Admittedly, it looks a lot like many other flatsedges, but a close look at the flowering part of the plant should help. The “flatsedge” refers to the flat whorl of leaves under the inflorescence. This group of sedges blooms when it’s hot, but I’d guess the best time to harvest would be fall, when they would be fattening up their winter reserves. Check their status where you live, but around here they are considered a weed — although the Flora hedges bit and says their nativity is “uncertain.”

Sedges in the news! An article in the Guardian made a reference to Horchata, but not the Central American drink made from barley. Apparently Spanish Horchata is made from tiger nuts — but what are those? Turns out they are the tuberous roots of a flatsedge, Cyperus esculentens.

As someone interested in #sedges, I’m delighted to find one that has been used for food for ages. And it’s widely distributed around the world, so you may have it in your area. #nativeplanya

Lovely, and it fits into a category of music that I love but never been to explain well. Instead of having a strong melodic line, this sort of music (or segment) has a very minimal melody, while forward motion is provided by the changes in the accompaniment. The melody can be as simple as one note, even just a held note, but its interaction with the rest of the music creates different harmonies and tones like light through cut glass making shifting rainbows.

I saw this group assembling. The lowest bee arrived last and had some interactions with the others before taking a place on the blade of grass. The single bee in the second photo also interacted but decided to settle on another leaf nearby. The grass is Broomsedge, last year’s growth. Flatbush Gardener 🌈 (npub1nz2…wgl6) already tagged you on #inaturalist !

Bad storm, but also one of the last times I felt like the Internet was going to make the world a better place. After a day or two, a G+ friend in California was concerned because he still couldn’t reach his mother, who lived alone in the woods. My kids and I went to check on her, and we found her without electricity but fine — standing in her driveway, saying goodbye to some *other* random Internet person who also went to check on her. We do have Carolina Mantis in Virginia still, but it’s much harder to find than the invasive kind. I make it a practice to destroy any of the non-native egg cases that I find, and I even (squeamishly, and with great regret) euthanize the adults by catching them and putting them in the freezer.
