The data's in a register anyways in the real hardware, so abstracting temporal reasoning over it is only useful for experimenting with the concept, not for experimenting with the actual performance characteristics that make it interesting

I've got a hello, world in asm being written to the filesystem as /bin/init, and the emulator is dumping the output as braille to the console

(KnightOS is a UNIX-like operating system for TI calculators. I've almost got a fully working build system on 9front, just need to flesh out a few more bits of the SDK

...and then port them back over to Linux so I can kill the garbage we've been using there)

/dev/sdE1 should be the CD drive; the USB drive should show up as a /dev/sdU..., not sdE; E is SATA, U is USB.

It looks like there's something wrong with that controller possibly (nusb/usbd: too many attaches in short succession), unsure if it's hardware fault or quirk or whatnot

Before I had the Tangara, I was using one of those mini audio recorders for a few years. Unfortunately, couldn't fix it when it broke, which was a major part of why I went with the tangara as a replacement :)

Something fascinating here: this is a codebase in C. It's not doing anything crazy by the rules of C. C is my preferred language, the one I'm best at. I understand every single line of code, on its own.

But a lot of the high level logic feels weirdly foreign, moreso than typical Go code even.

I can read the code and go "oh that's a hash table" pretty easily, and i get using a hash table to quickly identify cached blocks

But the table is, implicit? Sorta?

The heads of each "bucket" are stored in the cache, but there's no real bucket. Each block just has a doubly linked list to follow prev/next pointers which, sure, but then it also multiple other unrelated lists.

Okay, not too crazy.

But they're sorted by a fake ticker clock, except not entirely, only sorta quadratically? Which seems to just be a way to maintain a LRU in *yet another list* sorting the *exact same set* of *statically allocated blocks*.

And, i can untangle all of this. It requires pen and paper ( or a .tex file), but it's a fascinating experience reading something, understanding what it means, but having no clue what it's doing

Working on an old abandoned code base where i can't talk to the authors and it takes hours to figure out some of the bullshit it's pulling off, i can definitely see the appeal for a tool that can quickly read over the code and check my inferences on e.g. memory flow and ownership patterns

Nowadays, people would obviously default to either LLMs for that or for arguing that humans should do it because the other people are saying LLMs and fuck that

But what I'm more interested in: there's plenty of static analysis tools for checking code you wrote. Is there any prior art in deterministic static analysis tools that help _read code_ by other people?

Dataflow and control flow analysis are super commonly used in compiler optimization. Are there any tools out there that do dataflow analysis and then, say, can look at a variable and show all _possible references_ and relevant code?

E.g. this Foo* is passed to foo(), so it can be f there, which might call bar, and ...)

Or "this code allocates Bar, here's the entire possible relevant code for what might happen to that across this 100kloc project, here's every function in every file that might use _that specific value_, and an explanation of how it gets there"

Last time i ran into a deadlock i fixed it in like three or four hours. This is the exact kind of programming I'm best at, and it's with a project I'm familiar with and have used for 3+ years (without, i might add, any data loss or corruption so long as i ran fshalt, across at least four machines).

Fossil has very simple data structures and _already mostly works_. I'm not worried about deadlocks. If there were still data corruption or loss issues that i was aware of I'd be much more hesitant, but all that I'm intending to is related to in memory and on-CPU logic. I have no intention of changing anything about the disk format.

Venti is simple enough that neoventi seemed like a good idea. Compatibility with the disk format was the hardest part.

I think fixing fossil will be less work than trying to replace it, and fixed fossil + neoventi will do most of what i want. Venti is where the interesting stuff happens anyways.

And, importantly, if I'm wrong, i can just stop working on it and go back to e.g. wbfs. I also don't have access to the latest neoventi or pdffs sources until i get back to my pc, so I'm stuck with what i have on the reform; this seemed a reasonable short term obsession

The only data corruption issue In aware of is that the atomic ops intended to ensure poweroff doesn't lose data just, are wrong, so it power is lost mid sync a file can be truncated.

Fossil is not actually super complicated imo. We'll see.

E.g. if you have a function declared in a header and use it but accidentally have only a static implementation, 7l prints the wrong function name as the source.

Reading through the source, i think this is because undef, which checks for unresolved symbols, is called after everything else is done, and it calls diag, which uses curtext as the source, and curtext will not be valid at that point since undef doesn't set it

I'm gonna have to check the other linkers to see if they do the same.

Fwiw fossils code is less bad than ventis in many ways.

Reading through the fossil source code and refactoring to clean up and get familiar, already found and fixed a few stupid but mostly harmless bugs. Most recently, telling fossil to print out the list of file systems when none are configured suicides.

So if you launch a fossil with just a console, to configure interactively, and prompt for the list, hahaha no you don't

But wait, there's more!

Normally you can run e.g.

% fsys main check

To run a fsck on fs main, or you can

% fsys main

To set the current fs, and then

% check

If you run fsys without args, it looks like it's suppppposed to clear the current fs.

Instead, it clears a _second variable_ for current fs because there's two of them 🤦‍♂️

And it doesn't even clear that! It sets it to the name of the first fs!

I'd noticed a breeze coming from the circuit breaker panel due to shitty insulation for ages, way before the fire

I think the high winds of the storm, at like 5F temperatures, was providing inadvertent _active cooling_ to the circuit breaker

So as the wires and breaker were heating up due to overload, the breakwr was cooled down

But the circuit ran through a better insulated part of the house

So eventually, the breaker trips - but the circuit was already far, far hotter than the breaker

Still not certain how the heat translated into fire several hours after the breaker tripped, but - that might explain why the breaker failed?

Does this make sense?

We've been incredibly fortunate. Given that the house was on fire two days ago, i cannot imagine being in a better situation right now. This was an absolute tragedy, and some amazing people have responded with miracles.

Shelter, at least for the short term, has been sorted out thanks to a friend's casual acquaintance being an absolute angel.

The Red Cross, bless em, reached out to us and helped us with temporary lodging while we figured out something a little more stable and, unprompted, offered more assistance due to the ongoing storms.

Rabbi brought food through the storm, even though it took 10 to 15 minutes to get his truck turned back around.

There's so many people that stepped up to help that I'm struggling to even remember them all.

The fire and police departments responded very quickly even though we didn't actually know there was a fire until after they showed up, they got the information they needed and then got us out of the cold while they took care of it. We never even saw flames, and I'm grateful that they were able to keep the damage as minimal as it is, and that they got us in touch with the red cross even as they were fighting the fire.

We're okay, mostly. Horribly rattled, but okay. Looks like almost everything that matters survived too - e.g. important documents, sentimental objects. Some things are horribly damaged, our home is partly in ruins, but. Even Bubbles, the sourdough starter baby, frozen as it is with the heat gone, is alive.

Based on info from the fire inspector plus own observations, looks like a faulty circuit breaker that failed to trip while moderately to severely overloaded for 12+ hours. Uncertain how exactly the flames started, since the breaker did eventually trip 2+ hours before the fire. Seems likely that residual extreme heat plus weather conditions and lack of windproofing on parts of the structure did Something. There was likely a *lot* of heat built up, there was definitely some fuel - e.g. some spiderwebs - near the breaker panel. Arc of it tripping may have ignited something slow burning which eventually hit structure. Don't know exactly, though the root cause seems certain.

I'm fine, cats are fine, house is mostly fine but damaged. They had to tear the ceiling to get at it because the attic was inaccessible. It was an electrical fire.

Something that was done either before i moved in, or by the contractor who bailed on me, was done very very wrong.

House is damaged. Most stuff should be fine, or is water damaged. Frankly i don't care much about any of it right now.

Figuring out next few days. Very, very hectic. Will not respond. Just making sure people know.

My issue is just that I think a combination of factors ends up with some worse results:

- You're required to disclose if there's any
- You're not prohibited from saying that there is if there isn't
- Anyone can sue you if they claim there is and you didn't disclose it
- It's cheaper to just assume everything's dangerous than to actually measure

I think that some of the labels are so clearly ridiculous that nobody takes them seriously, and that results in people not taking the _actual disclosures seriously_

The warning that "this bookshelf contains formaldehyde" - useful. "and it will off-gas for a few weeks, make sure there's good ventilation, keep it somewhere where there's good ventilation for a month before moving it anywhere where there isn't" would be even more so. It tells you what you have to do to use it safely.

"This may contain _something_ bad but we don't know what, we just don't want to be sued if we missed something" <- detracts from the first one. It just makes people see "califronia says..." and zone out. There's no actual information in it, there's no instructions on how to make sure it's safe, so if you're already going to get it anyways, it doesn't change what you're going to do anyways...

AFAIK, lead in leaded solder is dangerous not for the fumes it provides but because it leaves contaminants in the environment. As long as you keep leaded solder in a dedicated work environment, always wash your hands before leaving it, and don't ever bring food in, AFAIK it's genuinely safer than the flux.
