I cut down a lot of Giant Ragweed (Ambrosia trifida) today and have a lot more to cut down tomorrow. Not only are they very tall (some over 6') and thick, their pollen is a big human allergen. The tall, leafy stalks are great for surface mulching so I am going to use what seems like a limitless resource to prep for some new beds.

It's humbling when nature reminds us that it's not always about us and what we need or want. The gorgeous plant below is a Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) and is toxic to mammals, wild birds can feed on the ripe flesh of the berries though.

We're getting a steady and varied supply of sweet and hot peppers: Bell, Sweet Banana, Habanero, Cayenne, Tabasco, Serrano,and Cherry Hot. We've also got this yellow-orange-red hot pepper that was supposed to be Jalapeno. It's not Jalapeno, but it's good.

One goal I have is to ID all the plants and trees on my property so I'm always on the lookout for anything that catches my eye on walks. Today I caught the purple popping in a sea of green. What I found was an Ironweed (Vernonia.) There are 25 different species so I'm not sure of which it is. I'll save that for another day. But along with being a beautiful native flower, the Ironweed is a big producer of nectar therefore, making it a great plant to attract pollinators 🐝, and therefore great for gardens (and butterfly watching.) 🦋

This flower grows very aggressively. It was started from a cutting from my grandfather many years ago and it continues to grow very aggressively, outcompeting other plants for growing space. After some research I discovered it is called Asiatic Day flower (Commelina communis). It is native to southeast Asia and has been used for food, fodder, medicine and dye. Since it grows so well I am going to supplement it with my life stock feed and maybe pick some flowers to add to a salad. They are a fascinating plant and I recommend further reading on them.

I have never heard of this insect prior to you bringing it to my attention. I don't believe they have migrated to my area yet. I did some quick research and it appears to be a non native species without a natural predator as you stated. They are researching the possible introduction of a parasitic wasp but at the moment the only control is pesticides (which I don't like) and mechanical means (i.e. smashing them). I did read a positive of the Spotted Lanternflies are the bees consume their honeydew and is a good source of cold-weather food and improves honey flavor. I'm always in favor of bee health.

I identified a new plant on my property called a Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans.) Apparently it also has the common name Cow Itch Vine due to causing redness and itching for some people. I didn't touch it, so I don't know if I am one of those people.

Today was canning day. Our counters were full of tomatoes, so we went with a preservation method that seemed pretty straight forward for the first time. We did a couple of jars of salsa and a few each of whole, diced and crushed. We also grouped like tomatoes in a few and mixed up a few for aesthetic. I am looking forward to some of the other suggestions everyone gave throughout the summer.

I found this little guy in the garden. Its the first Cantaloupe (I still dont know if there is time for it to grow into an edible fruit though.) I planted the Cantaloupe too early this spring and the temperature dropped near freezing and killed most of the Cantaloupe plants except for a few. After that they grew and developed incredibly slow. There have been a lot of flowers for weeks but I not seen one bee on them.

Long deep irrigation (not only will this encourage deep root growth but it will also help flush the salts down), add mulch to reduce evaporation and shade cloth over the top. I would also consider shading from western sun in the evenings if they aren't already

I took some pics today of a bunch of Habanero peppers I am anxiously awaiting to turn orange and a Charleston Grey watermelon (I think it looks cool.) I spotted this little guy in the garden--a Sugar Baby Watermelon. I had almost given up on watermelon and cantaloupe this year. I'm still not sure we have enough time to ripen. I planted really early and then it got cold and almost killed them all. But slowly they began to grow. I also found an even smaller Charleston Grey, Black Diamond and Hailey's Best cantaloupe.

I found this Black-eyed Susan growing up through my bush beans this morning. Initially when I saw it there was a butterfly sitting on it. But it made me think about how little honey bees I've seen this year. I am truly worried about bee populations. Today is already a great day. My son and I took took care of the garden and the animals from which we collected eggs. Then we came home and he cooked scrambled eggs by himself for the first time. I love that he is learning:
1. Where food comes from
2. How to prepare and cook food
3. What good food taste like (tomatoes from a garden vs. store bought, etc)
4. He was also discussing the economics of farming on our walk back

Its almost time to harvest some okra. I like to slice and dredge them in egg and corn meal and fry them in oil until crispy. Simply season with a little salt and pepper out of the oil. Pair them with sliced tomatoes--it doesn't get much better to me. How does everyone else like okra?

We've trained our new quackheads to go into the house at night so they dont get eaten by the racoons and coyotes. We have only 2 out of nearly 20 ducks that we released on our pond last year that didn't get eaten. We didn't train them, but they have been able to outsmart their predators.

Day 52: #grownostr initiative

Today i harvested Zucchini, Yellow Summer Squash, Cucumber, Jalapeno, Parsley and Mint from the garden. We are making Dirty Rice with the Zucchini, Squash, Jalapeno, Parsley and some Deer meat from a friend. The Mint is used to garnish a cocktail made with Hibiscus and Lavender Simple Syrup, Gin and Tonic.

Day 50: #grownostr initiative

I had to build a quick chicken run from fencing panels and some plastic sheeting. I used to free range my chickens but they like to eat gardens. I will be turning this into a tractor sometime soon. I've noticed since I've stopped free ranging the chickens they don't lay as many eggs. Hopefully a little more room will help.

As much as I like this message, as a man I think we were raised and expected to get out there, do what you have to do to provide for your family, take care of things that no one else wants to and do it without fanfare. And I think there is some beauty in that.
