The best word to describe my reaction after reading The Prettiest Star by Carter Sickels is Wow. Set in 1986, the story opens as 24 year-old Brian Jackson is roaming the streets of New York. Having just recently lost his lover to AIDS, and now living with it as well, he finds himself down by the river and imagining how easy it would be to just fall in and be carried away. Then the scene shifts to the small town in Ohio where he spent the first 18 years of his life. His mother is going about her usual routine, but it's clear there's something on her mind. She's received a letter from Brian, who she hasn't heard from in years. She sees the letters AIDS in the letter. Brian wants to know if it would be okay for him to come home for a visit.
This turned out to be one of those books I could have read in one sitting if time allowed, but be prepared and have the tissues ready.

Lost and Found by Liv Rancourt was a pleasant surprise. The setting is Paris the year after the end of the first war. Benjamin Holm, an American doctor, has returned to the city after spending several months in the states recuperating from his experience. His goal is to find his lifelong friend Elias who went missing after the war. After a rough start Benjamin strikes up a friendship with Louis Donadieu, another resident of the building where he's staying. As the two men spend more time together Benjamin starts to feel things for Louis that at first make him feel very uncomfortable. Around the same time we learn there are parts of his memory that are lost to Benjamin, causing him to wonder if perhaps his feelings for Louis are not as foreign as he believes.
Books set in this time frame have previously tended to not hold my interest, but this book has given me a new perspective on the subject.

I've been waiting several days for delivery of a book so decided to check the tracking last night. After leaving Houston and arriving at another spot in Texas on Wednesday it arrived at a USPS facility in York, Pa. yesterday morning. I figured great, just a short trip down the Pennsy Turnpike and it will be here in no time. As of this morning the package is on its way to Austell, Ga.😱

Sheesh. I just got out of the dentist's office and feel more like I spent my time at a used car dealer. The dentist said I have a couple old fillings that are cracked and will require a crown to repair them. Then he takes me to the front desk and up pops the closer with her handy tablet laying out multiple financing options. 12,18,24,36 months. All we need is your debit card to get you started. Every time I asked a question her response ended with all I need is a debit card to get you started. Finally I said oh drat I seem to have left my debit card at home. Maybe the fact that I've seen four different dental hygienists and an equal number of dentists in two years going to this place should have been a tip-off? Neither tooth is bothering me so hopefully I survive 6 months until I'm covered for another visit and find a new practice.

In the continuing saga of the washing machine, the order was placed a couple weeks ago and delivery was scheduled for tomorrow. I was supposed to get a call today with a delivery window, but of course there was no call. I decided to beat the tariffs and start shopping for a new washing machine before prices double. Our current washer is like a tank. It's at least 20 years old though, and starting to run on fumes. Everything out there seems to require at least a 27 inch door clearance so I measured the door it would come in through just to be sure. If you guessed that the door frame measures 26 and a half inches you win a prize.😱

This one kept my attention from beginning to end, and had me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. Not a dull moment in the entire book.

One of the things that frustrates me is that many rural voters who continue to vote red have benefited from the ACA(unless of course their governors blocked it). Who do they think is responsible for providing access to that? Even republicans derisively refer to it as Obamacare so there’s no mystery to it, and yet they vote for people who campaign on taking it away.

How Long Has This Been Going On by Ethan Mordden was first published in 1995, and chronicles gay life from 1949 forward thru an ensemble cast of characters that shows as much as we have in common we're all unique. I'm only about 20% of the way in, but it's quickly becoming one of my favorite reads of the year.
