Fuck no. Ask any trans kid whether their parents can make the right decisions for them. It's one thing to want to protect kids (who doesnt?), it's another to provide absolute power to the parents over them like they're their property.

Kids' rights are human rights should not be an empty statement. It should mean fight back against age verification, fight back against their systematic surveillance, fight back against removing kids' rights to digital privacy. And fight back against this insane idea that parents should inherit an almost divine right to police everything about their children's lives.

This is also absolutely true for software localization.

Translation tools are useful when I’m in charge of how I use them, and when I have contextual hints to help me interpret them.

But when a piece of software is localized exclusively using machine translations, not only are the resulting translations of poor quality (yes, even when done with LLMs — I’d even argue that they’ve gotten worse with LLMs), but also, as a user, I end up at a loss as to how to deal with them, except by switching the app back to English (if the option exists).

Suffice it to say that you’ve massively failed at your localization mission if the result is so bad that you’ve made me fall back to a language that I don't natively speak.

So, I have actually read the text of California law CA AB1043 and, honestly, I don't hate it. It requires operating systems to let you enter a date when you create a user account and requires a way for software to get a coarse-grained approximation of this that says either 'over 18' or one of three age ranges of under-18s. Importantly, it *doesn't* require:
Remote attestation.
Tamper-proof storage of the age.
Any validation in the age.

In short, it's a tool for parents: it allows you to set the age of a child's account so that apps (including web browsers, which can then expose via JavaScript or whatever) can ask questions about what features they should expose.

In a UNIX-like system, this is easy to do, with a tiny amount of new userspace things:
Define four groups for the four age ranges (ideally, standardise their names!).
Add a /etc/user_birthdays file (or whatever name it is) that stores pairs of username (or uid) and birthdays.
Add a daily cron job that checks the above file and updates group membership.
Modify user-add scripts / GUIs to create an entry in the above file.
Add a tool to create an entry in the above file for existing user accounts.

This doesn't require any kernel changes. Any process can query the set of groups that the user is in already.

If a parent wants to give their child root, they can update the file and bypass the check. And that's fine, that's a parent's choice. And that's what I want.

I like this approach far more than things that require users to provide scans of passports and other toxically personal information to be able to use services. If we had this feature, then the Online Safety Act could simply require that web browsers provide a JavaScript API to query the age bracket and didn't work unless it returned 'over 18'.

But it might be even more specific than that: it's when navigating back with the ← arrow key, then attempting to scroll *while the mouse cursor is on top of the Ivory window*.

The view will not scroll until I move the mouse outside of the Ivory window, then back over the window (without clicking).

Here's the Weather app incorrectly labeling a *heat wave* weather alert as “Intempéries,” which is only used in French to describe *wet* weather conditions, such as storms, heavy rain, or snow, and never in the context of extreme heat.

I strongly suspect the person who localized this string simply looked up the translation for the original string “Severe Weather” and chose “Intempéries” as the first result they found.

I've been getting some questions from admins regarding Tangerine UI for Mastodon (npub1lge…urx0) and its compatibility with Mastodon 4.4 releasing next week:

Unfortunately, I've been overwhelmed lately, so I was not able to release the new version of Tangerine UI ahead of the upcoming Mastodon release like I usually do.

However, *yes*, I am working to adapt Tangerine UI to Mastodon 4.4. It just may not be ready on day one.

In the meantime, nothing will dramatically break if you update to 4.4 and don't wait for Tangerine UI. Just note that users of the theme may encounter broken UI elements here and there (especially on small screens where there have been some significant UI changes in 4.4).

I recommend you enable notifications on the Tangerine UI for Mastodon (npub1lge…urx0) account, where I will inform everyone as soon as Tangerine UI is ready sometime next week!

Afaict, this still seems to be a thing in Ivory; however, I find that it triggers very inconsistently, or perhaps that the sensitivity of the two-finger swipe is very low and makes it hard to perform as a result. That being said, swiping back from a post to the timeline with two fingers is very easy to do and pretty reliable.

Is that something you've noticed?

My point stands firmer than ever now that Apple has introduced its 2025 Pride Collection. The company has brought this criticism upon itself.

In 2014, Brendan Eich, creator of the JavaScript language and now CEO of Brave Software, was appointed as CEO of Mozilla. I will quote his Wikipedia page for you (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Eich#Appointment_to_CEO_and_resignation), and you will very quickly understand why:

I think it would be more than fair to call for his resignation for the same reason that it was fair to call for Eich's resignation back in 2014. And yet, it seems that a majority of people are choosing to dismiss Cook's donation and subsequent stance regarding Trump's administration as either necessary, pardonable, or irrelevant.
