I've been using i3 and Sway for years, and I'm now using Gnome almost exclusively.

Do I miss tiling windows and extreme customizability from time to time? Sure.

But what I don't miss is spending hours at a time trying to get apps to deal with the window manager aggressively resizing them, or getting screen sharing or screenshots to work.

Like they say: Choose the right tool for the job. Use something user-friendly if that's your focus. If you want raw hack value, use something else. 🤷‍♂️

We're used to index.html being the file that's displayed when requesting what's actually a folder over HTTP.

I wonder whether there's a better word than "index", because index reminds me a lot of an alphabetical index, which is usually not what these files contain.

I've been thinking of "home.html", but I'd say the "homepage" is only the very top level of a website, not the index in subfolders.

Maybe something like "main.html"? Am I overthinking this?

I'm a proponent of static websites. Most generators use a folder structure with Markdown files and other assets as the input.

However, not all users are confident editing Markdown and YAML front matter etc. by hand.

Are there any good web frontends for this kind of stuff?

It should feel like the authoring backend for WordPress or whatever random CMS, with a WYSIWYG editor, and the result are Markdown files & assets. Bonus points for Git support.

We've been seeing efforts to remove the URL bar for years and years now. How long until we're back at AOL Keywords?

That being said, I feel like "the web" as in "open standards, and sites are being built with interoperability and semantic content in mind" is basically almost lost anyway. These days, we're building pixel-perfect web "applications".

Back in the days, when CompuServe's and AOL's non-web services were still a thing, I considered their walled-gardenness inferior to the web. But now, Google is building a new, larger wall. The AOLification of the web is almost complete.

When people say "the complexity of modern web technologies makes it almost impossible to create a new web browser from scratch", what they really mean is "a new web browser that supports everything Chrome does".

I wonder whether that's even necessary. After all, the web _should_ be built with progressive enhancement in mind.

But who am I kidding, right? Most people only test their sites in Chrome these days.
