I grow these from seedlings. They seem to be very slow growing and don't flower until the second year. I'm keeping this year's seedlings in pots until they're robust enough to go in the ground. When I was a kid in the 50s they were called "sample bags" and contained small sized samples of a manufacturer's products. Fascinating for kids. The Fauldings bag had tiny bottles of antiseptic, a gauze bandage and tiny tin of plasters. Kept me in supplies for playing dolls hospitals for months! Another bag had miniature tomato sauce, tinned baked beans, spaghetti etc. Sad that today's kids miss out on this.

The convenience comes at a cost, though. We had heaps of time in those days. Somehow having all those labour saving devices have resulted in folks having less time. I don't have kids but I gather they go to far more organised activities than we did. We played in the street - riding bikes and billy carts, marbles, hopscotch, skipping rope, tossing or kicking balls around, climbing trees, building cubby houses out of wooden fruit boxes and hessian potato sacks. My sisters and I were famous for getting a ladder and climbing onto the roof of our house.
So our parents didn't spend the weekends ferrying us around to team games, little athletics, music classes or whatever (we didn't have cars anyway.)

I don't think the desalination plant can be responsible for algal bloom occurring along 1000 km of coastline. The obvious cause is the unusually high sea temperature. There's no evidence that the desalination plant played any role in South Australia.

Yes. Exactly. It's 50 years since the practice of sorting garbage for recycling became common, and for some reason that's beyond human comprehension, recycling is not yet a public utility like water and sewerage.
When told that X packaging material "cannot" be recycled, the average punter believes it (!!!) when what it really means is "We don't want to spend the capital for the equipment that could recycle it" or some other operational reason that could be easily overcome if the recycling service was state owned.
Some well-meaning people even *post* recyclables like plastic bottle tops to destinations many hundreds of kms away. Yes, really! The manufacturers get free materials, with the freight paid for by the donors. Is "suckers" too harsh a word? .
Demand that your government makes sorting and recycling of "all" waste a state- owned public utility.
