my previous job (which was also my last job pre-transition but that’s just a coincidence) involved writing maintenance and diagnostic scripts for a series of medical laboratory analyzers that had been in the market for like 15 years by that point. if you’re in the business you’ll recognize the company name but it’s not important here.

what was important was that as a result of working on these machines, the office had several literal clinical-chemistry labs with several of them set up to do QA and such. i didn’t have to go into the lab very often, but because i did, i had to take all the trainings on how to properly use the lab space. things like proper use of PPE, how to handle a sample, various types of hazards, etc.

one of the most useful ones mentioned the Hierarchy of Hazard Controls: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchy_of_hazard_controls

basically, there are tiers of approaches to accommodating a hazard and ensuring the safety of the humans who need to work around them. from most- to least-effective, they are:

- physically removing the hazard to render it impossible
- substituting a hazardous situation with an equivalent, less-hazardous one
- creating a physical separation between the worker and the hazard, like a fume hood or a guard rail
- implementing a procedure or a ruleset to manage the hazard, like requiring training
- providing Personal Protective Equipment for the workers to mitigate the hazard, like hearing protection or respirators

the early items are considered better than the later ones because they rely less on the attentiveness of the workers to ensure safety. the more you can render a hazard moot, the better work you can perform without having to worry about accommodating a hazardous situation.

thinking about the DS and how best to play those games

i have an old DS flash cart but it's one of the old ones that only accepts a 2GB SD card >_> i could get a new one but then i have to get a new SD card, and then i have to make sure that the flash card i get is actually decent quality and works with an unlocked kernel so it won't hit a timebomb after a year

i could load roms onto my 3DS, but that's actually *really* slow to deal with, because of the number of 3DS games i've downloaded plus the delay of opening TwilightMenu. it actually makes using my 3DS kind of chore and makes me not want to use it most of the time

there's emulation but then i'm dealing with the form factor - if i'm not playing on my Steam Deck or my phone, i need to do something weird to deal with the touchscreen. other handhelds need an alternate input mode to operate emulated touch, and a PC/Mac will need to deal with a mouse to do it.

Delta is pretty good with DS emulation, but i still feel Really Weird about running any game with more time investment than sudoku on my phone tbh. i have a really hard time getting into anything that way

so those are my options. juggle files, spend $30, deal with slowness, or deal with weirdness. and thinking about how to do it "best" makes me avoid actually *playing video games* 🫠

i'm forgetful. sometimes it can seem like something you told me an hour ago is already out of my head. if something's not written down where i can reference it as needed, there's a decent chance i won't remember it when it counts.

sometimes i will forget what i'm saying in the middle of saying it! if i'm addressing a group and you know what i'm talking about and you see me start to struggle, it can get the conversation moving faster if you can finish my sentence. no guarantee i'll appreciate it in the moment, but it'll probably be for the best.

i may appear skilled at different things at different times, to the exclusion of each other. i may be better at coding in the morning, presentations in the afternoon, project planning on Mondays, architecture design on Fridays, et cetera. it doesn't even necessarily follow a rigid schedule, either - often it's chaotic depending on meds, caffeine level, sleep quality, general mood, life stuff, or just random whims.

i may appear to get things done slower than a singlet (non-plural person). due to the scattered nature of my attention and skill level, i may not be able to work on things as consistently as my neurotypical peers.

however:

over the course of my career, i've learned to counteract these potential negatives by playing to my strengths. my disparate focuses allow me to gain a greater breadth of knowledge than if i had one consistent specialty. the rotating nature of these focuses drives me to treasure each one and hone them to a great depth. the fickle nature of my memory leads me to call for detailed documentation of processes and architecture, for the benefit of myself and others.

i do not consider my plurality a curse. rather, it is a blessing. and the nature of the work i do uses this blessing to great benefit. i'm grateful that we can use our talents to the effect that we can.
