I watched the Gameoverse pilot. :wolf_peek: I really wanted to like it, but, like... it felt super rushed and kind of all over the place :soft_dizzy: It seemed like it wanted to start off with an origin story, but also started *sort of* in medias res? Narratively it was super confusing and hard to get your bearings on anything.

I was also really hoping that the art style for each character was going to be informed by the style of game they came from, maybe not to the extent of Gumball but something along those lines, but instead they're all drawn in this low-FPS style that doesn't feel particularly video game inspired.

I dunno. I'm interested in the series for sure, but it feels like a pretty uneven start. Also did anyone else notice that Grant Kirkhope straight up stole his own theme from Treasure Trove Cove for Flappers? :soft_owo:

Yeah, how I understand that ATProto works is that you're basically given *everything* and you have to filter it down to what you want. The advantage Bluesky has over a traditional blockchain is that the only "ledger" is the did:plc system which you don't have to host in order to access, and the did:plc system is just a standard key pair instead of being a proof of work cryptographic hash. It's honestly a little bit more like DNS than a blockchain. That said, I wouldn't call DNS decentralized. :neodog_what: DNS has an oversight authority the same way did:plc does. If the core mechanism for accessing the network is run by a central authority, I don't understand how it could be considered federated. Which is part of the reason Blacksky went down. :soft_dizzy: did:plc literally went down while Bluesky was being DDOS'd and it literally brought down *every ATProto service*. Woo federation!!! :blobfoxgooglymlem: There's also did:web, but that comes with all the downsides ATProto people whine about ActivityPub for since you have to first discover that the account exists through federation before you can ingress it.

But yeah, Bluesky is fake federation. If the only part of the stack that you can control is hosting your own data, you're not federating, you're just shouldering some server cost.

If I see one more person justify Apple's stupid walled garden by saying, "Well they have server infrastructure to maintain and they design all the frameworks that developers use," I think my head is going to explode.

1) Apple is the one who forces people to use their infrastructure. iOS could easily permit side-loading and the use of third-party SDKs and frameworks. If the costs are so great for them, then open up the platform.

2) People saying this ignore the fact that dozens of other operating systems, widget toolkits, and other developer frameworks exist without requiring a walled garden.

3) In order to deploy apps for iOS, you pay Apple for:
- An Apple device to develop on.
- A developer license.
- A cut of the app's sale price.
- A cut of every in-app purchase.

Does Apple really need to quadruple dip with their developers in order to provide their phones and SDK? Really? :neodog_what:

Never mind that Apple uses their locked down platform to steal ideas from other companies and destroy them by leveraging their deeper system access (see Tile) or that they regularly curry favor with authoritarian regimes by censoring the apps users are allowed to install (see Ice Block). The economic argument just falls flat on its face before any of that.

Also, just to clear this up because it's come up a few times: yes, Ruffy is also used by Aethy. No, CubHub is 100% ***not*** affiliated with Aethy in any way. I'm pretty sure we've had a few server blocks slung our way because of that, but Ruffy's GitHub was sent to me early on when I was starting out the server and I liked the changes because I thought Glitch was pretty obtuse at the time. :neodog_what:

Mastodon keeps adding new features and I'm really tempted to move CubHub closer to upstream. The problem is that I really like Ruffy. I like the theme settings, I like the modifications it makes to Glitch, I like the emoji reactions. So I'm kinda torn. It'd be nice to get new features quicker to release, but I'm not sure it's worth the trade-off of moving CubHub to a more traditional Mastodon.

I love Zelda lore videos because, like, you've obviously put 1000x more thought into it than Nintendo has. Every Zelda game's story is just kinda shat out without much thought put into it beyond whatever serves the gameplay, and when they actually *try*, it either makes no sense (hello Hyrule Historia), is deeply unsatisfying, or just leaves massive plot threads without any explanation. :meowthinkingglare: Nintendo obviously doesn't care about the story in Zelda games so it's weird when fans try to stitch together things that just aren't there.

You'd be totally fine using Linux if you got someone else to set up. The worst thing about getting Linux is the worst thing about installing any OS: installing the OS. It's not hard but it's just hard enough for most people that, unless they're really into doing it, it's probably not worth the brain space to do it. :blobfoxmlem:

Whenever I walk someone through installing Linux, I also have to sit there and give them a bunch of settings they should flip or change when they finish installing, which is the part that makes me pupset. :blobcorgi_pout:

If you ever got curious though and you have a spare USB stick lying around, you could just plunk a LiveUSB on it and play around with Linux no strings attached. It's fun. :blobyeengrin:

Putting aside that BFC didn't ban the frat and instead banned the person running it (for what sounds like bringing law enforcement to the convention, if the bluesky comments are to be believed), I kinda question the wisdom of having a frat party like that in the first place.

It feels like having a party in the middle of an adults-only space that requires its attendants to get drunk and be hazed while also apparently hazing non-attendees in the hallway is a bad idea from a liability standpoint. I do get the appeal of it for some people, but for attendants who aren't partaking or drinking, it was pretty disruptive.

My point was more about the privacy of ActivityPub compared to ATProto for people actually using the service. ActivityPub has robust privacy controls on the front-end while ATProto just blasts everything out to everyone listening on every relay that's hooked into your PDS.

I'm a bit confused by your broader point though. Big Tech didn't set this particular bar. It is completely infeasible, if not impossible to encrypt the userdata on a service like this. You cannot end-to-end encrypt posts sent between servers, it's impossible to send keys between that many peers that are also constantly changing. As for the userdata stored on the server, you can't encrypt it because you'd either have to distribute keys to all of your users, or encrypt on their password, which only works for things like password managers when you're only serving one client. The server needs constant access to everyone's userdata in order to carry out any kind of functionality. This isn't a failing of privacy considerations, this is just how technology works. On every service you have ever used, unless it's something specialized like Signal or Proton Mail, the host can read your data. Even on privacy-focused services like Signal and Proton Mail, your host can read your metadata and knows which peers you're communicating with because otherwise it wouldn't know who to send your messages to.

To be clear, I can only read people's DMs if I go into the database and manually look it up, and it's prohibitively difficult because I'd have to know what to look for and where to look. It's a needle in a haystack. But yes, to some degree you do have to trust your admin. Mastodon and Fedi is, by all accounts, public. It should be used with the understanding that everything you post can be public. If you want something that can safeguard your userdata, you shouldn't be using it and should be using something like Signal or Matrix instead.

Privacy is not a zero-sum game. Firefox is more private than Google Chrome. It doesn't make Firefox private. iOS is more private than Android. It doesn't make iOS private. Hell, even Signal can read your metadata because it's sending information between peers and it needs to know that routing information. There is no such thing as perfect privacy. Mastodon/Fedi is more private than Bluesky and plenty of other forms of social media, and Mastodon/Fedi are as private as they can realistically be.
