Speaking of reasons to not use Proton; there's an interview with Andy Yen, Proton's CEO, in our local NRC newspaper today, and there's a number of things in it that are worth highlighting;

1) Dude only does job interviews on Sundays, because that filters out the people who aren't really 'committed';

2) They want to grow to a billion users by 2030;

3) The unmasking of the Stop Cop City protester is not the first time Proton has assisted law enforcement, there are similar cases involving a French climate activist, and a Catalan independence activist;

4) They have complied with 94% of all requests for information since 2017, and got 9.301 requests last year, of which they rejected less than a thousand;

5) One of their latest products, Proton Meet, is built on top of US cloud services.

So, yeah, be wary of Proton, and the promises they make. They are Big Tech, they are tech bros, and they want to grow, grow, grow.

Also, since this is the likely source of some discourse that has crossed my timeline in the past 24 hours, a few thoughts;

1) While schadenfreude is wholly inappropriate, there is a core of truth in any 'this is what you get' type of responses you might see. Because this is not the first time this has happened to someone, it is not unique to Apple, and the above 'cloud sync is not a backup' is a piece of advice that has been given but gone unheeded many, many times.

2) I am kind of rolling my eyes at the 'I have been nothing but loyal for many, many years' vibes this has. Not only does it not really matter to the current situation this person finds themselves in, it reeks of privilege, and entitlement.

3) Because YES, it could totally HAPPEN TO YOU TOO, independent of your technology choices. The KYC legislation as it exists in many countries these days makes it more likely, not less. The resulting fraud detection and response is automated, and imperfect.

This toot reminds me of a thread I did on Twitter, over a decade ago now, about making a self-help comic book for white cis males, aimed at teaching them about privilege, and empathy.

(It would not qualify for the quoted poll, read an actual book)

It would be modeled on the Hero's Journey. The Mentor would be a wise old African woman, who sends our white male on a quest; to defeat that which endangers women most. To do this, our hero would have to defeat Privilege and Supremacy, and free Empathy.

In the process, our hero would learn that the biggest hurdle to fulfilling his quest and returning to the Mentor is himself. To succeed, he would need to defeat his own assumptions first, because they make him powerless against Privilege.

After Privilege has been defeated, he needs to travel across barren lands to find Empathy, and earn the treasure he seeks. Once freed, Empathy grants him two weapons essential to defeating Supremacy; Humility, and the Heart of Empathy.

1) Requires severe population compression, or collapse. The kind of shock to the existing system that creates the conditions for change, but disproportionately affects the areas where you could establish such a distributed society.

2) Organising emergency services, including healthcare, firefighting, policing, and disaster response.

3) Where will your technological base come from? If it's not local, how will you acquire, transport, maintain it? Solar panels, for example, other complex electronic components that require cities right now; who makes them? Who builds and maintains your farming equipment, medical devices? Why would they even sell or trade with you?

4) If you have a local technological base, where are your raw materials coming from? How will you mine them at a scale that satisfies the requirements of your society without oppressing anyone else?

The people who deliberately invested in a brand new Intel Mac Pro in 2023 likely (hopefully) did so because they intended to use what is essentially an appliance; hardware purchased as the computing core of a studio, edit bay, or other similar professional purpose, where it might not even be connected to the internets.

Like, no continuous recording, nothing stored, camera stays off until human gets within sensor range? 🤔
