This arrived today from a Discogs seller in France: a 1995 reissue of an early-80s Japanese project named Pungo, which was intended to be punk tango, and which I had first read about in a book titled “Dokkiri: Japanese indies music 1976-1989”

There are traces of tango in two of the tracks, in the use of the accordion, though not much elsewhere. Similarly, the punk side of this is mostly the spirit of anarchic experimentation; there’s little of the blues/rock-based idiom of punk rock evident, and you wouldn’t file it next to Sex Pistols or Black Flag. There’s probably more free jazz than punk rock in the mix. Indeed, what it sounds like is something you could expect to see at a space like Cafe Oto in London or Fylkingen in Stockholm.

This is quite interesting, and I can imagine it ending up in Bandcamp Daily if whoever holds the rights saw fit to re-reissue it.

A punk/antifolk-adjacent songwriter who goes by the name “Catbreath?” is getting a lot of attention for his music, by the expedient of giving his songs titles like “My Liked Songs”, “Gym Bangers”, “That Last Song Again” and “Country Songs About Jesus” (the last one being two minutes of noise), and relying on voice command handling on Spotify and Apple Music to do the rest. Not all heroes, and all that.

Interestingly, he says he’s getting about $150 a month from this. I wonder if that’s all from non-Spotify services, or if his gimmick is enough to push him over Spotify’s monetisation threshold into the company of the Drakes and Taylors and Harrys who actually get paid.
