Mount Monolith might be part of the most unique mountain ranges I've visited.

In the high northern Tundra these mountains weren't formed by your usual tectonic plates pushing up on each other, but by the volcanoes that erupted underneath ancient glaciers, freezing them in time as enormous black vertical walls, with column like pillars extending across the ridge lines.

Meet George :)

Paperwork is still being finalized, but, by the end of the day this lil (big) guy will be part of the family!

He's a rescue, found in Saskatchewan last winter. We've had him for a week already and he's pretty well settled which has been great. And, despite his size, he's really very gentle which is wonderful ❤️ he's also annoyingly clever and smart.

An additional image to my post yesterday - this incredible carving is hidden in plain sight, next to the concrete jungle of downtown #Vancouver. Carved into a massive trunk it feels like the face of an old tree spirit or protector of the forests here.

Whomever carved it has surely captured my imagination over multiple visits here.

Today I share a favourite from a trip years ago into the high mountains of the Assiniboine Range in #Canada during fall when the golden larches were at their absolute peak. The golden larches dotting the landscape in golden colouring at every turn.

Highly recommend backpacking this region. It is absolutely stunning.

I'm only ~186cm tall, and this is a problem I've struggled with for my entire adult life.

My knees are often tender or partially bruised at the end of a flight, and I can usually feel the weight of the person in front of me pushing against my knees through the seat materials - they can never lean their chair back, my legs physically won't allow it.

Oh, and this is all on the "standard" planes, not these extra tight ones.

I used to be much more determined to shoot #CityScapes with unique lighting. For this image, I'd set out on a chilly December evening and trained across town to get to my destination for near midnight - just in time for the full moon to eclipse near the peak of the #NewWestminsterBC Skytrain bridge.

For the wide scene, I ended up liking the image where the moon was entirely obscured by the bridge, creating a unique backlit appearance to the bridge where the stars were still partially visible.

Taken at the impressive #AlexanderFalls in #BritishColumbia this super close take on the lower half of the falls cuts out more than 50% of the true waterfalls height... Another fun fact. I took this image in #infrared, not because I needed to, but, it happened to be the only NS filter I had available to slow the shutter speed. The ND allows the median pathways of the flowing water to be more obvious.

Fun fact - I took this image about 15min before I fell through the ice into the river below... That was the first of two times I would fall into a river in winter that year. I wouldn't recommend.

Thankfully, I was nearby my car and had a sleeping bag and dry clothes ready to change into! Paid off to be prepared.

That said, if they're coming from MAC, I think #Ubuntu or at least a #Gnome based desktop may be more comfortable.

I've spent my entire day in a hospital so far. I am okay now, just a scare this morning, and thankfully have a medical system that wants to run tests to ensure my health. Yay #Canada!

I don't have a fancy image to share today. For #WaterfallWednesday but, I do have a cellphone snap of the impressive White Horn falls!

These falls are located behind #MtRobson in the #RockyMountains within the Valley of a Thousand Falls. The crazy thing is you can walk right up to the base of them... Just a short 20km walk! Though, I wouldn't dare. The river that these falls contribute to would be a swift end if you got caught in them.

From one of my favourite local #Vancouver #Forests to explore, this image of a Maple Vine tree reaching for the light is one of my favourites.

To get the compression I wanted I had to stitch about 9 frames together to get the full image in one shot. Moving closer would mean a large blue sky or the gravel trail beneath the tree would be visible. But, I'm happy with the result :) I titled it "Reach" given the trees aggressive lean.

When I first saw this bird I was absolutely taken aback - it was stunning. The shimmer of blue on its feathers, highlights of greens and purples. Just a gorgeous bird!

Of course, I got laughed at after finding out that this Sparling is effectively the crow of #SouthAfrica. So common that to most it is but a nuisance.

It reminded me of Magpies back home, or even Pigeons. Birds that would be of high aesthetic praise if they were more rare.

Taken in #Yukon #Canada this image is titled "Thousand Meter Descent". We had just finished our ascent of Glissade Pass, climbing at a 45deg slope for over an hour before seeing the halfway point to our days destination before descending into the Valley. Two days later, we hiked it in reverse.

I'm impartial to using #Monochrome for #LongExposure #Photography of #Waterfalls. With time slowed and the movement of the water obscured and averaged into ghostly streams the lack of colour allows focus to placed on these patterns. In many cases, and as the title of this image notes, these pathways end up looking like a white veil, folded up on itself.

I took this image while exploring the #Yukon #Wildlife sanctuary just outside #Whitehorse. I decided to crop it as a 1:1 image to help emphasize the symmetry present in the antlers of hiding elk. The title is of course in reference to the number of points on the rack.

I wanted to capture the sunset from the peak - I had a suspicion that the sky would light up for #Sunset and match the #Mountain flowers. On my descent I stepped funny, bending my ankle and reinjuring my recently sprained ankle again! I then hiked 8km solo in the dark down to camp, I didn't make it back till midnight. Hiking out the final 9km of trail the following morning was very hard!

Took this image of a white #BigHornSheep at the #Yukon wildlife reservation. We were in the area fetting ready for a backoacking trip and decided to see what the area had to offer. A nice little stop to see the conservation efforts of the #Whitehorse area and witness some beautiful animals up close. Most of the animals here have been injured by vehicles.

A personal favourite of a location I have countless images from - something about this small light beacon and rock keeps me returning here.

The logic I see to it is that a given electorate may be a great Prime Minister and leader, but, may not be the best representative of their community.

It would be a shame to restrict a potentially great public servant because their home riding doesn't feel like they are able to address their communities concerns, even if the person fits the higher role.

As for funds, its a rare occurrence with marginal extra expense in the scope of our election process.

I personally have no objections to PP being allowed to run again in another riding. It's an intentional feature of our election system, regardless of its flaws, that I think has good reasons behind it.

That said, if I were a resident there I would be encouraging my neighbors to vote for someone that actually knows and cares about my community.

so, further review shows that the issue happens when any type of VPN is turned off. It doesn't resume once the VPN is restored.

Airplane modes fixes it as noted above. But the VPN service doesn't make a difference. I tried three different ones.

I suppose most wouldn't cycle it on and off, but, I was testing some network stuff and wanted it off for moments.

When I'm on wifi, I have no issues with connecting to the internet or posting online - to Mastodon for instance. However, when I switch to cellular I am unable to often.

The only solution I've found for this is turning off the DNSnet, activating and then deactivating airplane mode. Then my cellular works.

Does anyone know what permissions I have wrong? Or if I have something set up incorrectly?

This past weekend I met up with Morgan Carmont (npub14h5…2sck) to go explore the forests of #VancouverIsland. To say we had an epic weekend would be an understatement.

Amongst our many adventures, we found a new #oldgrowthforest to explore and I had to take a photo in front of one - the size of them is just incomprehensible otherwise. For reference, I am over 187cm tall. This single Big Leaf Maple is easily 10m diameter at its base.

One of the parts I enjoy most about shooting waterfalls is seeing the patterns of the flow of water hidden within the chaos of the splashes and spray.

With just a slightly slower shutter speed the flow of the waterfall cascades becomes obvious revealing these silky white streams.

Really excited to share this image for #MountainMonday today. I took this image on my first ever trip to #Europe last year. We ventured to the #Mountains in Northern Italy for some hiking where we were greeted with freshly snow capped mountains. It made for an incredible welcome to our trip to this area.

This image has become one of my favorites from the trip. Hopefully I will return someday.

I was searching through my images for ones to submit to an upcoming competition and found this frame, it seemed perfect for #WindowFriday.

Taken from the top of Harbourside Place in #Vancouver during an event, I was clearly drawn to the repeating white pillars amongst the chevron like window pattern. There's also a sense of abstractness - am I looking up or down at these buildings?

I've always been absolutely thrilled with this image I took of Crown #Mountain in #Banff #Canada

Specifically how the mid day light illuminated the closer peak and the clouds drifting between and around it to accentuate it's shape. The blue cast is from the haze in the air.

I might get a chance to revisit later this year which I'm excited about.

A deep dive into my first images after moving to #Vancouver found this shot. I like to think I was a trend setter, I'd bought the glass orb if my own fruition from a garden store well before the #Lensball craze happened. It was sat next a garden gnome and meant for a pond decoration.

While a bit cliche now, I remember having a lot of fun shooting these images and playing with the orb.

I was inside the capital building of Antigua #Guatemala and as I walked up the stairs I looked out the stairwell window to see this gorgeously framed flower pot. Someone had to have put it there on purpose! I particularly enjoy the effectively black canvas created by the dark interior behind.

I hope frozen water counts for #WaterWednesday

An image from 2022 of the infamous Abraham Lake in #Alberta #Canada with its frozen methane bubbles trapped just below the surface.

The bubbles from my understanding are a result of organics buried in the lake bed after it was created by the nearby manmade dam. This place has unsurprisingly become a huge photo attraction as a result.

#ThrowbackThursday to one of my favorite images taken on a trip to the #Canadian #RockyMountains back in 2021.

I've re-processed it now, after having lost the original edit. Thankfully I still have the RAW file!

It became a favorite mostly because of the setting I shot it in. A quiet moment in a very busy trip that became a moment to relax mentally and enjoy the evening breeze.

I had just barely moved back to the #Edmonton area for a short work stint, and my sister and I already had made backpacking plans. We headed off into a lesser known area of the #CanadianRockies to explore an old route the settlers used to traverse the area. This #Mountain - the Sphinx as I came to know it - towered over the valley as we hiked the meadows. A wonderful welcome back to #Alberta

Every once in a while I grab one of my vintage lenses and adapt it to my Fuji, add a combo of extension tubes and head out into the forest to see what small things I can find.

I often search for scenes like this one - a small capped mushroom standing proud on a log. To my joy, I noticed this very tiny slug traversing the log too. For scale, this mushroom is the size of the white of my thumbnail! Tiny!

It's #WaterWednesday and with it I share a gorgeous sunset I witnessed years ago after a heavy rainfall on the coast of #Canada
With the clouds breaking, the warmth of the evening sun cast a gorgeous fiery colour palette over the remaining storm clouds.

My partner noted this image yesterday to me - we've been looking through my archive picking out images to print for our walls at home. So this one is now high on the list.

#Throwback to my 23rd birthday. My sister and I decided to do a siblings trip down to #Guatemala - our gift, paying for each other's flights. I had just purchased my first camera. A #Fujifilm X-T20 with some basic lenses.

Being so new to #Photography I came home with way too many images, often from taking more shots in the hope one works. Well, this one did! A found frame in my archive of files.

At the time, I couldn't find a single image of this place that wasn't just a snapshot. I probably wasn't the first, but I'm positive I was one of them. Since then a neighborhood has been developed nearby, a 3D image published to maps with a pin, and the spot found by the influencer crowds. It's a shame seeing the state of the area now. I haven't returned for years.

I run a landscape photography discord online, [@michaelrussell](https://mas.to/@michaelrussell ) introduced me to Mastodon a year ago, and we've been explaining it to some of our friends on the discord over the last few months... we're both a bit shocked at how in one fell swoop they all finally took our praises of Mastodon seriously and signed up within a week or so of each other. I'm excited a bunch have jumped on board for me to enjoy here now :)

Mount Cimbanche, Italy (2024)

I had hoped to climb a portion of this peak on my first visit to #Italy #Dolomiti however upon arrival I became ill and had to be satisfied with roadside pullouts. Luckily, it snowed the day before I arrived so I had beautiful snow capped #Mountains to #Photograph!
