☄️ It’s somehow clear again this evening so I had another go at C/2025 R3 of course. This is 50 x 30 second snaps with the :seestar_s30: The comet moved enough against the background stars during that half hour to make the coma look like a tictac instead of the sphere it really is.

Mixed results with my wide narrowband imaging. I can definitely see all the structures I expect, but whilst the oxygen data (blue and green channels) is in perfect focus, the hydrogen data (red channel) is a blurry mess. Not sure if that is because of chromatic aberration and/or lens back focus or because of internal reflections.

Still, it is what it is. And it is this: the Vela Supernova Remnant and Gum Nebula(e), the Southern Milky Way from Crux, via Lambda Centauri to Eta Carina, and the center of the Milky Way in Sagittarius with Lagoon, Trifid, Eagle, Swan and Star Cloud.

All these are 24 x 300 seconds of data with a Nikon 50mm lens at f/4, Altair Astro 6nm dual band filter.

Tonight is a total lunar eclipse for eastern Australia. If you can see the Moon, you can see the eclipse. Best seen by eyes and not any special equipment :-)

The eclipse starts before moonrise (at about 8pm) but there won’t be that much to see until about an hour later, when the core of the Earths shadow starts to take a bite out of Oceanus Procellarum.

Totality begins just after 10pm and the Moon should go a nice shade of red as the combined sunlight from all sunsets and sunrises on the planet faintly illuminates it.

The actual shade of red and how dark it gets depends on what cloud cover is like along the edge of the planet where the sunlight travels through our atmosphere.

About an hour later, around 11pm, totality will be over. The bright stars you’ll see around the eclipsed Moon are all part of the constellation Leo. #astrodon #astronomy #space

My new #astrophotography project is off to a rubbish start! The mosaic mode layout preview and reality do not match up, so I have this mess to show for it.

Each of the four panels are 24 x 5 minute exposures, but they’re supposed to be rotated by about 90 degrees and line up with about 200 pixels of overlap on all sides.

Better luck next try? This is about half of the Vela supernova remnant, which sits in the southern Milky Way.

The blue filaments are gassy shockwaves from a star that exploded at the end of the last ice age. The red clouds are all hydrogen gas that is yet to collapse down to form new stars, or is in the process of doing so.

So it turns out that whilst we were away at #EO2026 a pigeon apparently managed to get down the chimney and into the living room.

I think that it was unfortunately stuck in there all through the heat wave, and with the airco off and everything shut tight it got to 40 degrees inside as well.

No water, so it did not survive. And it did not go quietly into that good night. A lot a lot of things (carpet, furniture, shelves, lights) are covered in pigeon poo.

🪼The Jellyfish Nebula

This thing is a bit tricky to get from down here, but the weather cooperated between xmas and new year and I was able to snap a few nights worth of data of this scene in Gemini.

On the right, a relatively bright supernova remnant makes a jellyfish shape. That thing exploded probably some tens of thousands of years ago.

To its left is a region of gas that is *forming* stars. It is much fainter and doesn’t have a popular name, its is simply known by a catalog number - Sharpless 249. Its shape most reminds me of one of the dancing raw chickens in the Sledgehammer video.

This is about 7 hours of narrowband Ha/[OIII] data with a William Optics RedCat 61, Altair Astro 6nm duo band filter and ASI294MC Pro camera.

Last night did not go to plan. As the sun set, high cloud started drifting in and by the time it was dark it was also completely overcast.

I did spend a little bit of time playing with the new infra-red filter on the big scope. The filter should help make the image more stable; cutting out some of the movement caused by air turbulence that affects visible light more.

Unfortunately, the cloud also meant the heat of the day got trapped so it was still over 30 degrees and the seeing was terrible even with the filter.

Still, I could get a relatively decent view and the electronic focuser meant no jittering trying to dial this in manually and with some processing I got some nice detail anyway.

I got Copernicus, Mare Imbrium and a zoon in on Vallis Alpes and crater Plato on the edge of Imbrium. For a sense of scale, that flat crater on the right, Plato, is 100km in diameter.

Three clips of about 100 x 10msec frames with :meade_lx200_acf_ota: :zwo_294mc: processed with siril.

I managed to snap about two hours of 10 second images from a dry lake last night, between 10pm and midnight.

This is all of them compressed into a time lapse, with the stars rotating around the south celestial pole.

Other than the horizon being weirdly bright and there being a *hint* of a vertical pillar from time to time, this was pretty much not naked eye visible.

Nikon D750, ISO8000, Nikkor 14-24 F2.8 lens at 24mm f/4, 553 x 10s.

From a dark site with a flat horizon and a proper camera, comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) is a stunner at the moment!

Easily visible with the naked eye, with the tail visually extending for about 10 degrees.

With a 30 second exposure at 70 mm f/8, the tail is maginficent! This is just a single snap. Yes, there are also *fifteen* 🤬 starlinks in this single photo. A new record for me 😡

M78 - Orions Liver

This nebula has been on my want-to-photograph list for a long time, I think it’s very pretty with its dark swirls.

Like many in Orion, it is a star forming region with bright blue young stars enshrouded in dark dust. As their extreme radiation eats away at that dust, they erode bubbles inside.

It is located in the sky about where Orions liver would be; close to his belt in the direction of his right shoulder - red Betelgeuse.

The very very bright thing on the left is Venus.

I didn't get comet photos because severe thunderstorms were on the way, but I did get lightning shots of the first storm.

After it had just missed us, clear patches of sky appeared and I noticed the pointer stars - alpha and beta Centauri - so I could finally focus the camera.

Therefore this is a single 300 microsecond exposure. Probably the best single exposure of the Sun I ever did.

Spiral galaxy NGC253 and globular cluster NGC288 in the southern constellation of Sculptor. I guess that’s why they call it the sculptor galaxy :-)

This is a relatively nearby galaxy (12 million light years) and it is about as large on the sky as a full Moon. If you know where to look, you can spot it as a faint elongated blob with binoculars.

The glob is a buzzing ball of stars that orbits the Milky Way. It is “only” 30,000 light years away.

This is one or two irregular dwarf galaxies. They’re known as the Small Magellanic Cloud, but recent studies suggest it may be a pair of galaxies lined up behind each other.

You can just make out some nebulae inside. Those are giant star forming regions, caused by the Milky Way trying to pull the SMC to bits with its gravity.

The bright spots are globular clusters, a bit closer to home. The top one is 47 Tucanae, the smaller one on the left is NGC362.

I’ve started to go through the holiday photos. These are all birds hanging out near a water tap at Kings Canyon (on an unseasonal 36° day)

A white-plumed and a yellow-throated honey eater, a zebra finch and a spinifex pigeon.

The honey eaters and pigeon were not shy. The finches, the whole flight of a few dozen, flew away whenever I tried to aim my camera at them.
