I called my mechanic the other day to see when Penny could bring the vehicle in to have it checked out for an exhaust leak and he said he would just swing by in a couple days and check it out and give me a price.

He got here tonight and sure enough, there is a leak at the manifold connection.

He gave me a price to fix it and then he said, "I hate to do it, but because of the economy, I have to charge you an $80 service call charge," which is something new.

I said I didn't want a service call. I wanted to drop by and get an estimate to fix the leak but you said you would swing by and provide me an estimate.

No. The fighting neighbors are gone. One went to jail (unrelated to the disputes and behavior at their home) and I'm not sure where the rest went. They had a knocked down drag out one night and I think they were forced to move.

The only other "bad house" on our street which I nicked named the "drive through "pharmacy", because it is a drug house, got foreclosed on by their bank and is for sale. After it is cleared up, my street will be near perfect.

We had several empty houses that families with young kids have moved in and our street has done a 180 over the last 6 months, except one MAGA man and woman.

It is. They come and see us around once per month and had an opportunity to sell their place at a premium due to a store development and over the past 7-years fell in love with #AppalachianOhio and decided this is where they wanted to be, esp now he is 70 and retired.

The place they are looking at is 10 minutes away but my neighbor here just listed their place and it is a bigger, better, and cheaper place and they are going to look at it.

I see why people may want to auto purge posts on Mastodon but that is unfair to people who reply or quote post, which leaves orphan replies and interactions with no context. It also leaves database entries and media that may come with interactions on servers.

I think one option to be fair would be to create a post setting that marks a post with an icon or something warning people that it is subject to auto purging, giving people advance notice who then can decide to interact or not

Post not made with the auto purge option can still be deleted but must be deleted manually.

It would be great if manually deleted posts had a user panel that users could see and then manage their orphaned interactions.

If you are following #PaulsYard, here is the view of the front yard #NoMow #WildFlower meadow from today's work from the security camera. The front yard edging and mulch beds, that surround the meadow, is now 90% done. We call that the horseshoe.

Tomorrow, The side yard raised bed garden work begins.

The front yard when completed will have one patch of grass next to the driveway that is 6 ft wide and around 20 ft long just for any visiting dogs to have a grassy place to potty. #Gardening

Sissy is not taking to having a newbie in the house.

We are still having to isolate Millie to the "cat room" and let them be in the same room for a while together. We're spending time with her. She has really taken to me.

Sissy is being such a witch.

It's going to take patience and time. It's only been three days.

I feel bad for Millie. She is ready to be out all the time now.

Sissy even hisses at us if she smells Mellie on us.

That would be great. I've been using Michael Thomas (npub10fw…2fd9)'s #FediFetcher python script since 2023 to backfill accounts of people. I am not sure how far it goes back when it backfills accounts, though, but it really makes it nice to open a profile and see posts instead of an empty profile.

tl;dr: Invasion of privacy by camera. Porch to porch is very close on my street. It's very unnerving that my neighbor across the street has one of those motion detecting cameras on its porch and every time there is significant movement at my desk, inside my home at night, it detects me and the spotlight, which is a joke, comes on and it records me for so long. Lort knows what data it is sending to lort knows where. I know a lot of them have AI detection built in.

I shouldn't have to completely black out my windows to have some basic #privacy in my home, at my desk. Even when I close the blinds it detects shadows.

There should be a law or regulation that mandates and gives a right to a neighbor to enforce a neighbor with a camera to setup blind zones. #law

Just think if a next door neighbor in those close subdivisions that share a fence sets up a backyard camera on its roof eaves. You have zero privacy behind your 6 to 8 foot fence.

RIP Dale! Had to flip through a bunch of old little notebooks to pull out the family contact info for one of my best friends I used to hang around with for about 15 years until we moved back to Ohio in 2012 because the normal contact pattern with him has ended. It took some time but finally got it and found out that a few months ago, he got gourd by the bull he had "rented" for his cows on his little gentlemen's old fart farm in Tennessee and passed away.

That is exactly how he would have wanted to die, if he had no choice in the matter, just for the story alone.

X-ray tech arrived with her mask on when she came to take x-rays of my lungs today. So glad I didn't have to ask her. I think she remembered from last time.

The doctor ordered it at 10:30 a.m. this morning when he came to my home for my visit and she arrived shortly after 1:30 p.m.

One of the benefits of getting primary care in the home is getting labs, radiology, etc also done at home. Another benefit is catching medical issues like emerging pneumonia as soon as possible without an ER or hospital visit.

The program doesn't cost Medicare any extra money and it actually saves by catching things that would lead to hospitalization early and treating it. Since I've entered the program in 2014 I have not been hospitalized unless it was a scheduled event. Prior, I was in ICU at least twice per year for like 4 years. I know I'd be dead without it. It's probably saved #Medicare a million dollars in billing over that period. I know it has saved my family a cheap funeral.

3/ Penny is doing fine. They are concerned about some dangerously low blood pressures. They reduced her water pill to take only any morning that she gained 3 pounds. They hope it is because she isn't keeping enough water in her system. They did change her visits back to every 3 months from twice per year again.

A month or so ago I had a server failure and had to roll back my self-hosted Mastodon, and due to bad backups and a failed backup system, I had to roll back 9 days to the last successful backup.

I have 9 days of Mastodon media stuck in my storage with no relationship to the rolled back server and most of that media came from relays, so it is a hefty chunk of files and storage.

Will tootctl media remove-orphans remove them?

edit: I want to add, my backup system has been fixed and I have multiple daily db backups that are rotated and held for a significant period of time off the Mastodon server... I also check them often to make sure. Learned my lesson.

A week in and it looks like our new MAGA neighbors are the kind that hang out in mass droves on their porch and small, 10 foot or so front yard, with everybody they know, which means I will have to close up my office window curtains, maybe even move my office to a different part of the house. All day and most of the night 6, 10 or more adults hanging out.

WHY do they all have to talk so loud over each other. They don't let one person talk but talk all over each other loudly.

The noise and chaos has been unbearable and summer is coming. It used to be a street with families and kids, not always quiet, but not a destination venue, either, until MAGA moved across the street.

It's been a while since I have posted this, but on days when my motor control is off due to my Parkinson's, or in times when my meds are "turned off" in-between doses, being able to "Flip" through my Mastodon timeline has been a godsend and has granted me more #accessibility to the #Fediverse as well as all the content through the #Flipboard app. Flipping through my timeline allows me to stay connected socially. It is really a great #a11y application.

Yesterday, on the way home from visiting my brothers, (180 miles round trip) around 5 miles from my home a car went flying out of the long driveway into the street at a high rate of speed without stopping and looking and nearly made us have to crash off the side of the road.

We barely navigated without hitting it or going over into the widow maker ditch. We are the red dot and the driveway is on the right.

This program has been a good program and has kept me out of the hospital or even institutionalized.

Looks like they have a new part of the program for safety. They are going to send someone out to service our furnace and check for overloaded outlets and resolve any issue there, like install extra outlets and circuits.

To my surprise, a new part of the program includes consumer directed needs. I will be reimbursed a total of $2500 per year for out of pocket items as long as it is related to my health or safety and not covered . Like the feeding tube supplies I buy out of pocket because Medicare doesn't supply enough, new smoke alarms when the old ones meet end-of-life or batteries, medical or accessibility items not covered by insurance.

The carport conversion to the cardiac fitness, music and rec room is coming along nicely. The window and door out to the future garden "patio" is in.

Tomorrow, the siding goes up on the outside front then we will have a two week layover until we get the crew out again to finish the siding and do some interior work. #PaulsRoof

What started as getting rid of a couple flat roofs turned into this.

Our goal is to get it dried in, some electrical, get the outside done and setup Penny's cardiac equipment and stop.

We'll wait a few months to do the extensive interior finish.

Penny went with tan siding, white trim and going to paint the doors Hunter Green. If you recall, we found the siding for $2.22 per panel and purchased a bunch of it. That was like getting 7 panels for the price of 1.

So, who is mad in love with #gardening and #landscaping and would love load up in their RV and take a vacation to come to #AppalachianOhio on the #Ohio River (70 miles east of #Cincinnati) and get in the mud with my small yard. Got 8 raised beds to setup for vegetables, a nice wildflower meadow to seed, some dwarf trees to plant, sacks of bulbs, etc. Making as no-mow as possible for the environment and so we can take care of it due to my disability and Penny's reduced strength and endurance after her widowmaker heart attack.. #NoMow

Our little #AppalachianOhio village has a mom and pop "door dash" like service now. We only have a dollar store, a pizza shop (that doesn't offer delivery), creamy whip, and a gas station which doubles as the "fresh food" grocery store.

My brother said my old school bus driver sent him a message the other day asking about me. The message was, "Are you related to Paul Chambers who lived on [redacted] road?"

She's got to be in her 80s now, or pushing it.

The last time she drove the bus, before retiring, was in 1987 just before Halloween. She had a medical issue, did a low speed crash, and I did CPR. I was the second to the last person on the bus. The other person ran for help. We were "rewarded" with season passes to Kings Island Amusement Park because of it.

We ended up with around 8 inches of snow but the worse part of it is moving in as snow is turning to rain and the temps are below freezing. The rain that turns into ice that comes in after the snow is what takes out the power and really makes travel unsafe in #AppalachiaOhio #Ohio #Weather #OHwx #wx

Luckily, we have a whole-house generator that automatically switches over that runs everything but the oven and dryer. We have heat, and so far, the small village hasn't had a water main break. We are stocked up with water, though, just in case.

You can't see it but her head is perfectly resting in the hole of a donut plush toy that she uses as a pillow. She actually positioned it for her head. lol. She tried with the heart plush toy but it didn't do the job she wanted so she is using it as a arm rest for her paw. lol
