In theory you should be able to go out there with some goo-gone and it'll take that right off. Not sure why that cost $3k unless the finish wasn't bonded properly and it peeled off with the adhesive.

She shows how plants manipulated the atmosphere, manipulated the crust of the earth, then manipulated animals to do things like pollinate their flowers and carry their seeds around. She ends the book by posing the question "are plants manipulating us?" Namely by being ornamental, tasty, etc they get us to spread them to new locales. It's a fascinating concept.

One of my favorite rhododendrons in my garden is blooming early this year. It's been a mild winter. This is Rhododendron sinogrande (no common name) which is native to Southwest China. In the wild it can grow more than 30 feet high and those leaves can reach three feet in length. It won't get that large in our climate. I particularly like the partially emerged buds when the scales are just coming off.
#gardening #PNW #rhododendron #Bloomscrolling

(August-September). Mostly because of the European orb weavers, invasive here, which are around all year but are more noticeable in the fall. You have to carry a stick through the garden in the morning to knock down the webs so you can pass. They're quite harmless though. We also have very large wolf spiders that like to live in basements. Not much of a haven for arachnophobes I'm afraid.

Xera plants offers "climate adapted plants for the Pacidic Northwest". They used to have a retail location in downtown Portland, but now sell directly out of their grow houses in Sherwood. chatting with the owner, he said they got tired of carrying plants back and forth.
5/x #gardening #PNW

I had the day off work yesterday so I took a day trip to lovely Portland Oregon. I stopped at a couple plant nurseries. First up: Cistus Design Nursery on Sauvie Island. Sean Hogan, the owner, is a well known garden designer and his residence (just behind the nursery) has been featured in magazines and glossy coffee table books. Sauvie Island has an unusually mild microclimate that allows plants like this eucalyptus to thrive. Find the Lake Eleanor trailhead on the map. It's on the North side outside the National Park boundary. You can park there and hike in a little less than 3 miles and that gets you to Grand Park on the North side of the mountain. From there it's relatively easy access to the Northwest side of the park. I'm not sure it's any easier from Paradise/Longmire but worth considering.

Two places that stand out for me: the area around Indian Bar on the East side has got some spectacular views of the mountain. Berkely meadow on the North side just East of Skyscraper Mountain is a particularly pretty meadow. Spray park is really big and very pretty (lots of bears!) but I don't recall it having the same dramatic views as the East side. But you'll likely have it all to yourself now that the bridge to Mowich lake is closed.

Sailing ships would record their speed at regular intervals by throwing a log overboard, attached to a rope, at the bow. Here is an unassuming little fern in my garden. Asplenium trichomanes, maidenhair spleenwort. You wouldn't guess that it has one of the largest natural ranges of any vascular plant on the planet. It's found on six continents for sure and possibly now in Antarctica as well. It has very tiny spores that can easily get wind-blown high up into the atmosphere and right around the planet. It grows most anywhere but prefers rocky places with adequate moisture. #gardening
#nativeplants #PNW #fern

I wonder if work like this could even have been conceived in the era before digital special effects became common in film. Like certain paintings were only possible after the advent of motion pictures, this feels like a digital motion graphic made physical. On a practical level I'm trying to imagine how it got fabricated and installed. The welds (I'm assuming it's welded) are very expertly hidden, at least in the photo.

Mint is ridiculously easy to grow in most circumstances. This sounds like more bad luck than anything. If they're arriving in heavy clay that means the provider is just digging them out of their yard or something. Moving around plants growing in garden soil carries a risk of invasive pests or diseases. I'd avoid sellers that do that. I suspect what you got was a freshly dug start that may not have had enough established roots on its own to survive root washing.

Scorzonera is also called salsify (I think the narrator mentions that) which is the more common name for that I think. There's some salsify growing on the community college campus near me. Not even cultivated, it's just a weed in the parking lot.

None of these are banned and "Big Ag" doesn't care about them. But I guess that's what it takes to get views on YouTube

I've been coming to this show on and off for years. The gardens have gotten more and more impressionistic over the years, and they're now more like art installations. This one is super fun but kind of inexplicable. It also features a little crevice garden, which I love to see. They're becoming popular all of a sudden.

3/
#PNW #gardening #Seattle

Most of the show gardens are sponsored by plant nurseries or hardscape suppliers, like this one sponsored by a landscape stone company. So, like, if you want a replica of Stonehenge in your backyard you'll know who to call. Photo 2: check out this clever artificial bonfire that works by combining one of those sonic water-fog makers (like you see in terrarium shops) with some orange LEDs. It's pretty convincing if you don't look too close.
2/
#PNW #gardening #Seattle

I stopped by the Northwest Flower and Garden Festival at the Seattle Conventiin Center yesterday. This show happens every year. It's huge. The highlight are these "show gardens" which are sponsored by various landscape industry vendors, retailers, and organizations. This one happened by be done by the Putallup Indian Tribe and it features all native plants of the Pacific Northwest. Residents could have plants no higher than six or eight inches unless they were “useful” or “ornamental.” Vague laws play an important role in the history of segregation. Law enforcement can deploy them as they see fit, and neighbors, as in the Virgil’s case, can weaponize the law by phoning in complaints."

In the same years as the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, which made it illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, or financing of housing, the vast majority of American municipalities passed laws that one way or another left homeowners little choice but to plant turf grass in their front yards."

A lot of the plants are readily recognizable as houseplants, but not all. It seems like the larger specimens are permanent, but quite a few of the smaller plants are grown in greenhouse grown and added as they come into bloom, and periodically swapped out. Still, it takes a lot of skill to create arrangements like photo 4-- naturalistic but attuned to human aesthetics.
3/4
#BainbridgeIsland #PNW #Vancouver #Houseplants

Visited the Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver BC yesterday. It's named after Prentice Bloedel, scion of timber baron Julius Bloedel and relative of Seattle arts philanthropists Virginia Weighted (Bailey Wright). Bloedel reserve in #BainbridgeIsland is their other botanical legacy. There's a very similar geodesic dome tropical conservatory at the St Louis Botanical Garden. #PNW #Vancouver #Houseplants
1/4

Despite their excoriation of the bigotry of Christian fundamentalism, they eventually outed themselves as insufferable bigots in their own manner, Dawkins (anti-trans, anti-gay) and Harris (anti-Muslim) in particular.

I'm especially intrigued by the eyes of the baby in photo 2. Mask in photo 3 is a replica of a sacred sa:sq'ets mask carved by Sts'ailes artist Ambrose Point in 1938 then lost and found 70 years later in the Museum of Vancouver and returned to the Sts'ailes. Field trip to British Columbia this week. We stopped at the Sasquatch Museum in Harrison Hot Springs, about 2 hours' drive East of Vancouver. It's actually the visitor center for the town, which is mostly closed in the winter (the hot springs resort is open). They have some cheesy statuary, a life sized fiberglass sturgeon (sturgeon found in Harrison lake), and a very perturbed eagle.
1/2

We lost a chicken (only 7 months old!) for a similar reason last week. We noticed something protruding from her vent, and some blood on her legs. We found an animal hospital that would look at her (40 minutes away) and they told us that what we thought was a stuck egg was a large ulcerated tumor. They told us her prognosis was extremely poor owing to the amount of dead tissue present and the infection setting in so we had them euthanize her. They were very kind.

It's usually a lead-great sky, drizzle, and mist. As it happens a lot of plants here are evergreen (sword ferns, salal, evergreen huckleberry) and the moss turns bright green in winter. At 2500 feet elevation there typically would be at least some snow. As you ascend in elevation snow patches get more frequent till it's everywhere. This time I didn't hit extensive snow till 5500 feet.

They work for no pay, can't come and go, can't quit without being excommunicated from the cult.

And hoo boy in the second half of the show they did a whole false history propaganda interpretive dance thing. I got that creepy felling up the back of my neck and was wondering if they were gonna let us leave after. It's a bad thing. Extended family member apologized afterward--"I didn't realize what it was" she said.

Here's the view looking back down from the pass. You can see the waters of hood canal, the the Kitsap peninsula, followed by more of Puget Sound. Then on the horizon, the snow capped Cascades and just a glimpse of Mt. Baker, one of our active volcanoes.
END
#mosstodon #Moss #PNW #hiking #nativeplants #mountain

This is the final approach to the pass at around 6000 ft (1830m) elevation. The last mile was all hard, icy snow-- here about 5 feet deep-- but still far, far less that is normal for these mountains. I turned back once I saw the holes where previous hikers were postholing up to their hips. With the low winter sun already headed over the ridge by 2 PM, I thought it prudent to head back down.

#mosstodon #Moss #PNW #hiking #nativeplants #mountain

We've hit the tree line now. What strikes me about this place as opposed to the same transition zone on the West slopes of the Cascades is how litttle meadow vegetation there is. Where is the grass, the alpine blueberries, the asters, the corn lilies? Yes it's winter but last year's foliage should be evident. It's very dry and rocky here, such a sharp contrast to the mossy valley below. #mosstodon #Moss #PNW #hiking #nativeplants #mountain

More lichen, this is one of the commonest forms we see here in the Pacifice Northwest, called witch's hair (Alectoria sarmentosa). Here it's growing on a hemlock tree.
#mosstodon #Moss #PNW #hiking #nativeplants #mountain
