#Electronics and #HamRadio people, is there any point to getting a phone capable of 2G and 3G anymore? There's still enough areas without 5G in Germany that I think I want to make sure I have a phone capable of both 4G and 5G, but can I do cool projects or IoT stuff with 2G and 3G? What about with radio capabilities? Apparently some phones have FM radio and I don't care about that for music but I would care if I can use it with other of my own devices.

EDIT: since my old phone still works, I guess I can always use it as a hotspot on 4G to provide a signal over wifi to a 5G-only capable phone, if it comes to it. Should I even bother looking for a 4+5G capable phone or just commit to 5G?

Once again putting it out into the world that someday I would desperately like to work on a research vessel at sea. I'll take holiday time and do it as volunteer hours if a short-term opportunity presents itself.<li>I can write excellent code in Python without an internet connection</li><li>I can do basic electronics and soldering</li><li>I have college-level chem and biochem and PhD-level structural biology</li><li>many years ago I was on a sailing team, so I can tie knots and hike and stuff if relevant</li><li>also fine with manual labor and repetitive tasks. I'm seeing an uptick in people using descriptions of mental illness or incapacity as shortcuts for malicious behavior. We have a lot more words for the former than for the latter, and we've all had the associations drilled into us, I know, but please don't reinforce it.

We don't use someone's traits to insult them unless we think those traits are bad. When we call our enemies stupid, insane, etc., people dear to us see descriptions of themselves weilded as insults.

It also reinforces faulty logic that ultimately makes its way into policy. There's no link between mental illness and violent crime, for example. Mental illness spans the gamut of ways people struggle to take care of themselves and interface with society, but not harm to others any more than we see it in the general population. Mentally well people can do every type of evil and horrific act. And no form of unwellness would excuse them, either.

TL;DR Nazis are bad because they're Nazis, not because they're insane, which they aren't.

Since it's not made of fiber it won't be adding microfibers to the wastewater. The way people have been abducted off the streets is also only partly new -- ICE has been around for years doing just this, and their jurisdiction covers a majority of the US in population (but not in land area). It's expanding and becoming more politically motivated, more likely to swallow up citizens and legal residents, but hardly new. We've been the bad guys for years.

I have mixed feelings here. This seems a little under-researched, but coming from a good place. Collecting personal written accounts could be sensible at a stage where you have a plan in place for what to do with them, but just spamming elected officials with them is unlikely to be effective, and would require getting more explicit consent for that purpose.

The other thing is, an open-ended call for ideas and the single person named here suggests he's not already working with organizations that have work in progress and need boots on the ground. I strongly recommend plugging into existing efforts and organizations. That's not to say don't do what he's proposing -- just don't reinvent the wheel. Work with and learn from people who have been doing this sort of work.

Lastly, I would be remiss if I failed to point out that the US is far from the only dangerous place to be trans, and it will be important to make sure any efforts at making space for refugees from the US don't displace or leave behind people in much more precarious circumstances. I know a non-American trans person who came to the Netherlands as a refugee and found the experience utterly dehumanizing. The details aren't mine to share, but there are plenty of stories out there. I think it makes the most sense to start by addressing known problems with the asylum process, with or without the focus on trans refugees, and to get guidance from current asylum seekers and people recently granted asylum.

I hope this can be taken as constructive criticism. Please send Ned my best wishes for his success in this effort, and my thanks, along with my comments.

I've seen vacuum sealed in the US, but they don't make perfect bricks out of them. And non vacuum sealed soft packs are typically sealed under nitrogen with off-gasing valves (since they'll release CO2 for a while after roasting), which also keeps them O2-free just as well.

Today's: I finally discovered that the mysterious brick-shaped packages of coffee are the ground coffee I've been searching for. 2nd edit: I can only find reference to corundum crucibles, which are quite distinct from cuvettes. Interested to know if I'm wrong of course.

3rd edit: okay this is just a terminology thing. Saphire is corundum and there are sapphire cuvettes for specific applications (very expensive). Stuff not qualifying as sapphire might still get labeled corundum, the broader category, and that includes crucibles. I learned a thing!

honestly reading the current era described as “the season of the rescinded offer” is helping me grapple with my verbal job offer never materializing, which means giving up my beautiful apartment -- rent controlled, a short walk to a local grocer, great natural light, and in the heart of the Bay Area -- I'll never get it back.

As much as I'm genuinely looking forward to moving to Hamburg where my preferred lifestyle (bike/walk/train) is much more achievable, I will miss this apartment specifically.
