This is my favourite photo from my skydiving, probably because it's the most ridiculous.

I started a new tradition of skydiving every 15 October, because that was the date I lost my Julia. I wanted to associate that date not just with losing something infinite, but also something exhilarating to look forward to.

However, I think this year I'll do it twice: once on 15 October, and also on my 47th birthday. I achieved a hell of a lot this year, most notably enduring an absurdly difficult recruitment process and succeeding in scoring a job I love, and of course beating breast cancer (well, assuming I will have beaten it once treatment ends). I think I deserve to actually celebrate my birthday for once.

I'm blown away by how much my colleagues at work have stepped up. I'm relaxed and relatively unconcerned about the next month because I am confident that I can deal with it whilst balancing the other aspects of life, but knowing that there are people who genuinely care makes a big difference.

This will sound strange, but I'm glad this happened. It's been a clarifying process in two important ways:

1. I'm impressed that I've been handling what most people would consider a major crisis with considerable aplomb. It's reassuring to know I can count on myself when under duress.

2. While the difficult part was realising that my friends are unworthy of that title, I'm grateful for that clarification. And as I said above, I'm pleasantly surprised by how the new people in my life have stepped up without me even having to ask. I won't forget that. I'm generally wary about work relationships, but I think these people have shown me that I can safely call them friends.

I feel so lucky. Now if the rain could please bugger off so I can ride my bike again.

They mansplained my own tyre preference to me, made excuses as to why they used the different tyres (excuses which fell apart under the slightest scrutiny), and then flat out lied when they said it was because they didn't have the same size in stock and didn't want me waiting further. But they replaced them on the spot from tyres they had in stock!

I had my bike serviced last week, and they replaced my tyres with skinny ones. I called this morning and explained that skinny tyres don't fit my purpose and that I would like them replaced with thicker tyres like I had before the servicing. I gave the tyres a chance yesterday and they didn't work out.

Dude proceeded to explain my own purpose back to me and why the skinny tyres are more appropriate.

Things are going well in my life in many ways, but lately I've been kinda depressed not because I'm going through diagnostic testing to hopefully rule out breast cancer, but because contemplating all possible outcomes has made me confront the fact that if I do kick the bucket, the only person it will matter to is me.

Just wanted to thank some of you for being here and making me smile anyway. You guys are wonderful. I'd tag you, but I don't want anyone feeling left out (and you probably know who you are, anyway).

At any rate, I'm optimistic about the outcome but prepared for the worst. And by prepared, I mean I'm prepared to blow my entire savings that were meant for a home deposit and go on an epic round-the-world trip that will end in New Zealand, where they are humane enough to put you to sleep with dignity.

In my anecdotal experiences (recent and longitudinal), when you tell someone you aren't interested in being in a relationship now or in the forseeable future and they assure you they're totally cool with that, they really aren't totally cool with that. At all. In fact, they may even ask if you want to move in together very soon.
