OK, it's time for me to do what I dislike doing the most: to beg. Uhg, I feel gross just thinking about it but...

I want to get the Sparrow Nix package updated in Nixpkgs ASAP because if it doesn't get updated before the Java SDKs 22-24 get dropped (which will happen sometime between now and the release of NixOS 25.11) the Sparrow package will be in a broken state; Hydra won't build it, and end-users won't be able to install it. Which means I'd have to do a NixOS 25.11 backport of the Sparrow package, and I hate backporting.

I'm doing this disgusting begging dance in hopes that some plebs will test the Nix package and make some noise on the PR: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/449169

Luckly PRs have been getting merged much quicker than they used to, so there's still a good chance. So,

1. Test the package.
2. Post stickers, comments, whatever, on the PR.

Also notice that the PR number ends in 69, which is the number of... uh... creation ;)

      OK, sparrow 2.3.0 is out! And you can get the Nix package from my Nix flake https://github.com/emmanuelrosa/btc-clients-nix

Did I beat all of the other third-party packages?

The update will make it to Nixpkgs at some point, but it's worth noting that this Sparrow update did not work with the recent Nix package update to Zulu 24. So, I removed the Nixpkgs JDK and went with the bundled JDK, which is something I recently mentioned I may have to do, which is Temurin 22.

One nice benefit of this change is that the package is simpler; Less Nix code.

      Nix package updates:

- The bisq2 JDK was updated from 23 to 25, and from openjdk to Zulu JDK; Because there seems to be an issue with openjdk 25 and JFX 25.
- The sparrow JDK was updated from 23 to 24. sparrow is currently not compatible with JDK 25.

The problem here is that within a couple of months JDK 22-24 will be dropped from Nixpkgs, which leaves sparrow without a compatible JDK. Yeah, this is all happening again.

I already tested sparrow with the bundled JDK (created with jpackage), which is Temurin JDK 22, and it works. So there's that option.

There's nothing quite like a good game of whack-a-mole.

      Can you imagine Apple, Dell, Lenovo, or HP taking about their defered or rejected products? Yeah, that's not going to happen.

Well, Framework did just that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RzUBqtgODM

What I find interesting about this is that instead of the usual, constipated "business talk" that's used by BigTech, the CEO of Framework talks like a normal person to consumers.

It's refreshing. I asked the Qwen3 "Thinking" Large Language Model to find associations between the Ninja Turtles and the classical four elements. It was quite creative:

- Leo = Fire (energy, strength)
- Mikey = Water (fluidity, adaptability)
- Raph = Earth (stability, power)
- Donnie = Air (movement, speed)

Not bad.

Then I raised the stakes and asked it to use this to create a short funny poem. This crap is to be expected. It's what happens when things get socialized:

quoting
nevent1q…0qxz
US Health Insurance companies are now charging for 2 visits if you take your child in for their regular checkup and ask a question not covered during a routine checkup
This isn’t a conspiracy. This happened to this woman not once but twice, and 2 of her friends
“So I call, and they're like, oh, yeah, you technically were billed for two visits. And I was like, excuse me? She's like, yeah, it says on here that there was a question asked that didn't involve the physical”
“I was blown away. I was so perturbed. I was like, that's absolutely ridiculous. So yesterday when I took my son, my other son, the guy's going through all the, sign here, sign there, then gets to the last one, and then it says, you know, do you give permission to be billed if services aren't covered today. And I said, I don't want to sign this, because how do I know what will be covered, what won't? He's like, oh, that will be determined by your insurance.
— So another lady comes over and she goes, well, if they ask you if you have any concerns, you have to say no. And I go, okay, but if I have concerns for my son, that's technically a second visit because it's not covered under his yearly checkup. She goes, yeah, I mind blown.
Like, I don't know what this world has come to, but I am just insanely crazy about this kind of stuff. And just recently, I've had two friends post about the same exact situation.”
US Health Insurance companies just keep getting worse and worse and nobody in power cares

Waste of time, basically.

It’s a reminder that a big percentage of what you see in heavily politicized media is about narrative framing and talking points rather than genuine attempts to discuss or explore. It reminded me why I normally decline to go on political shows; I had only agreed to this one because the catalyst was in person and so the agreeable side of me was like “sure, why not”.

Well, that’s why not.

      I just got Bisq2 QR code scanning working on NixOS!

Right now, it's only in my btc-clients-nix repo because I'm looking for feedback.

I created a package which runs the Bisq 2 webcam app, so that I can test QR code scanning without having to trade BTC. Here's how it works:

1. From a terminal, execute: nix run github:emmanuelrosa/btc-clients-nix#bisq2.webcam-app
2. Use your web cam to scan a Lightning invoice QR code.

You should then see the Lightning invoice text printed to the terminal, however it may happen quickly so it's easy to miss. You can always see it in the log file $HOME/.local/share/Bisq-webcam-app/webcam-app.log.

It'd be great if y'all can try it and let me know if it works or not. I'm pretty sure I got all the dependencies, but you never know.

PS: I had trouble getting the app to detect the QR code; I had to get more lighting into my room and hold the QR code up close and with a steady hand.

#nixos #nix

      Here's my latest Nix-based project, quickdb (https://github.com/emmanuelrosa/quickdb)

Copy-pasting, ... quickdb is a suite of Nix packages to easily start development instances of PostgreSQL, MariaDB, or CouchDB on GNU Linux.

- Rootless
- The Nix package manager is the only dependency
- (somewhat) portable, because you can use nix-portable to build the packages.
- You can set up multiple instances of these databases by editing the config files to change the database port number.
- Database runs like a normal process you can kill with CTRL-C. This means the database runs when you want it to, and is not started automatically as a service.

It's a protocol, not an implementation of the protocol.

I guess one way would be to design a backdoor right into the protocol, but that would require implementations to not notice the compromise and implement the protocol in such a way that it allows the trojan horse to function.

Perhaps rather than a conspiracy, it's really just a big clusterfuck between X11 vs Wayland and DEI vs anti-woke. Two big piles of poop getting all mixes together, making challenging to see what's going on.

      As Yakko and Wakko used to say: Helloooooo Knots!

So far so good.

Though I must note that neither the bitcoind nor bitcoind-knots Nix packages (in Nixpkgs) have any kind of signature verification process. The Electrum package has verification in their updater script, and the Bisq 2 and Sparrow packages have build-time verification. I may need to roll up my sleeves and do something about this.

#nixos

      The Bitcoin checkout process at Steak n' Shake couldn't be simpler.

Phoenix completed the payment in about 580 ms, and that was over LTE, not Wifi, and while connected to a VPN. In contrast, it takes "tap-to-pay" about 2-3 seconds to send pathetic credits.

      Well, I didn't expect the shit to hit the fan in the Bitcoin Core saga, yet here we are.

One way to avoid accepting the dev's change is to switch to the Bitcoin Knots implementation. Another way, at least until the dust settles, is remain on Bitcoin Core 0.29. It so happens that on NixOS this is pretty easy to do. Especially using Nix Flakes.

First, you need to "pin" Nixpkgs so that your NixOS build remains on a version of Nixpkgs which has Bitcoin Core 0.29. It's not ideal to make this "pinned" Nixpkgs the same one you use for the entire NixOS build because then you'd be suspending all updates to your system. Instead, create a separate flake input:

flake.nix:
```
inputs.nixpkgs-bitcoin-core-29.url = "github:NixOS/nixpkgs?ref=cf3ffa5d140899101f1deb3f4d16b1a1aa2de849";
outputs = { self, nixpkgs, nixpkgs-bitcoin-core-29 }@attrs: {
};
```

Next, you need to override the bitcoind package that's used by the NixOS module that you're using to setup Bitcoin Core. Here's how it's done for the bitcoind module that comes with Nixpkgs:

configuration.nix:
```
services.bitcoind.mainnet.package = nixpkgs-bitcoin-core-29.legacyPackages.x86_64-linux.bitcoind;
```

If you're using a third-party NixOS module to set up Bitcoin Core, it probably also has a `package` attribute which you can set in the same way.

And.. that's it!

Rebuild and you're done; Bitcoin Core will remain on version 0.29 until YOU decide to change it; Unless somebody breaks the NixOS module :(

#nixos #vivaclassicbitcoincore

      Given the current saga in Bitcoin Core, it's worth remembering that "votes" are cast by the Bitcoin implementation (and version) that you run, not by the pull requests that get merged.

But the source code is indeed important. In case shit hits the fan, which I don't expect, I made a Git bundle out of the Bitcoin Core source code. At ~270 MB, it's small enough to fit on a USB flash drive, for safe keeping. And it's easy to do:

git clone https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin.git
cd bitcoin
git bundle create ../bitcoin.bundle --all
cd ..

Then, simply copy bitcoin.bundle to a safe place.

      I sure hope Amazon doesn't REALLY mean "ALL" of Prime when offering Prime at 50% off for socialized assistance programs (aka. "govement" assistence) recipients.

These programs are purposely restricted so that only certain items can be purchased; They are funded by everyone, after all.

For example, if someone tries to buy wine at a supermarket using an EBT card, the point-of-sale system automatically rejects the purchase.

Prime offers streaming video, and free shipping on all sorts of things; Computers, TVs, you name it.

So... how is this going to work, Amazon?

https://www.amazon.com/58f8026f-0658-47d0-9752-f6fa2c69b2e2/qualify

      Since Bisq 2 got kicked out of Nixpkgs moments after it was merged, I'm going to wait until after the Nov. stable release to create a new pull request.

To be clear, Bisq 2 was removed due to contention with the staging-next branch being merged into the master branch, so it wasn't a malicious act. It was just bad timing on my part.

It does give me some time to look into getting the QR code scanning to work.

      I think that with a little push, y'all can help get my Bisq 2 NixOS package over the finish line so that it gets merged prior to the NixOS November stable release.
Especially considering that it's easy to do :)

First, run: nix run github:emmanuelrosa/nixpkgs/bisq2#bisq2

That will grab the package from my PR, build it, and run it.

If you have a HiDPI display, then use this instead:
nix shell github:emmanuelrosa/nixpkgs/bisq2#bisq2
bisq2-hidpi

Then, go ahead a play with Bisq 2 for a bit to see that it works. Note: QR code scanning is unavailable at this time.

Finally, go to the PR at https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/347160 and add a comment stating that you tested the package, and then explain the results: Did it work or not?

The package code has already been reviewed and I addressed all of the concerns. What's needed is to have users report that it works; Those who merge code in Nixpkgs don't usually know how to confirm whether a package works or not since they don't use the software themselves.

Let's make this happen, y'all.

#nixos #bisq

      For those of us using Nixpkgs master beware that the staging-next branch is scheduled to be merged into the master branch on October 30th.

The staging branches often contain major changes; In my experience, they destabilze the master branch.

I use the Nixpkgs master branch. The strategy I've been using for years is to update Nixpkgs prior to the staging branch merge, and then hold off until the stable release "branch off", which is on November 14th. After that the master branch should be in a good state.

#nixos

      After such a downer regarding Bisq 1 on NixOS, I want to mention something positive.

I started a new Nix flake to bring amazing support for Squeak, Cuis, and Pharo Smalltalk to NixOS.

By amazing, I mean a level of seemlessness that is unmatched by any other operating system. The idea is to provide tooling and bundles to make it mind-blowingly easy to install and use different Smalltalk implementations and images, all at the same time.

For example, if you have a Smalltalk image, you can open it right from your file browser:

Right now I only have a "bundle" for Cuis 7, but soon it will be possible to install various versions of Cuis, Squeak, and Pharo Smalltalk, all at the same time without conflicts.

You can also launch a "bundle" using an app launcher or menu, which will then produce this Zenity prompt:

Creating a new Smalltalk image is damn fast because the image is already in the Nix store. Just choose a directory, or create a new one, and before you can blink your eyes the Smalltalk image will appear before you, executing with an appropriate Smalltalk virtual machine, ready to go.

Gone are the days of fumbling around, downloaded VMs and images, extracting them, .... boring.

Well, that's the idea. The project is still in it's infancy, but you can play with it here: https://github.com/emmanuelrosa/smalltalk-nix

If you have the Nix package manager, and Nix flakes enabled, you can just do this: nix run github:emmanuelrosa/smalltalk-nix#cuis-7_0

Before you know it, you'll have Cuis Smalltalk 7.0 right in front of you.

#nixos #nix #smalltalk

      I recently mentioned that Bisq 1 is now marked as broken on Nixpkgs because OpenJDK 11 was removed.

I came up with a solution to get us by until Bisq 2 is feature-complete. The basic idea is this:

1. Create a NixOS-friendly AppImage of Bisq 1.
2. Keep a copy of the AppImage in a safe place.
3. Either use the AppImage, or use a bisq-desktop package with a pinned Nixpkgs, so that you can still access OpenJDK 11.

All of the above can be done with the Nix flake https://github.com/emmanuelrosa/bisq-for-nixos

Note: It's very likely that NixOS users using Bisq will soon discover that it can't be built anymore. Since NixOS doesn't track its users (how dare they!), this build failure is actually the best method we have to communiate that action needs to be taken. I've been emailed in the past by people using Bisq on NixOS, so I'm sure I'll here from them soon :)

I plan to remove the Bisq 1 package from Nixpkgs after the November stable release. I did not expect to have to do this so soon, but here we are.

#nixos #nix #bisq
