I think you conflated 2 unrelated things. Data centers don’t provide internet service to residents. The amount of data center space required to supply internet service is minimal. If the goal is tech and ISP for locals, it could be scaled way down.

Maybe you’re thinking that data centers can get a lot of money into a community, but they come with all these negatives. So the plan is alleviating the negatives. I don’t know if you’ve looked at the long-term viability of data centers, or the profit margins. They are very low profit. Sometimes the companies using a data center are very profitable. But the renting of computers in racks is a low-profit business.

So I like the thinking and the goal, but I think the data centres are a bad long-term bet for a community. They are so capital intensive, single-purpose, and super slow to build. A community starting today would cut the ribbons in like 2-3 years. And the AI/data centre landscape will be radically different at that time. I think it’s a bubble, not a permanent change to bank on.

The heat comes from servers running on electricity. The electricity is made by burning non-renewable fossil fuel. Burning the fuel accelerates climate change, regardless of what happens to the heat after it is generated.

The data centers are a massive net add to the amount of electricity consumed. That is a massive net add to fossil fuel burned, which is a net add to climate change. Finding a use for a small fraction of the byproducts does not reduce the impact in a meaningful way.

It’s a distracting token gesture like recycling plastic. Yes, some tiny amount of plastic can genuinely be recycled/repurposed. But it’s a fart in a hurricane. It doesn’t make a dent in the massive amount of non-renewable waste.

The heat from these closed loop systems is substantial. And it goes somewhere. Where does it go? The local climate. Areas around data centres get meaningfully hotter, interfering with local ecosystems.

It’s one thing to argue that something else is more important. Whatever. But these are bad arguments for deprioritising the climate impact because they’re uninformed.

They were saying that the first thing they have to teach grad students in any science field is this basic file system concept stuff. Physics, chemistry, engineering, whatever. People can get all the way through a BS and not really encounter how the computer organizes storage

Secure software doesn’t matter if everyone dies to climate change. Until we talk cost AND benefits, there’s no point in talking benefits. How much climate change and damage should we accept to use AI for “security” purposes?

And who is writing the fixes for the “security” findings? People or AI? How does this not lead right back to writing code with AI?

And why only security? Why not performance, also? Why not reliability? Why not portability? Accessibility? Why would we consider this one non-functional requirement—security—and none of the others?

A poll like this is easy to ask because all the hard things are silently resolved in each respondent’s mind. If a project tried to somehow limit AI use to “just security” it would fall apart quickly. It’s not possible to define or do.

More to the point, it is a very debatable position that companies like Microsoft should have no accountability (warranty, liability, whatever) no matter how bad their released software is. Microsoft omits how the law treats them so specially.

Microsoft wants the exploit maker held accountable. Microsoft is very interested in seeing the law applied to HIM. Laws holding THEM accountable for vulns? Suddenly they’re not as interested.

Heisenberg’s importance. Windows occupies two simultaneous states: so important that we must’t recklessly disclose vulns, but not important enough to regulate for the good of society.

First he goes on and on about the Turing test like it is some kind of law handed down. Like, the fact that sequences of output tokens so closely resemble speech they might pass Turing’s test. He views a moving of the goalpost (Turing’s test apparently isn’t enough to distinguish consciousness) as unreasonable. Like Turing got it right and it’s wrong to say otherwise.

And then he has these risible conversations: ‘I then asked her whether, when she read my novel, she read the first word before the last word. No, she read the whole book simultaneously.’ Let’s not ignore the ‘she’. The thing has a name. ‘Claude.’ It implies a gender. But Richard Dawkins genders it and genders it female. I don’t think that’s a random thing.

We know how computers work. It absolutely does read the book byte-by-byte, in a sequential series of input tokens. It does not matter that the thing output some words that said otherwise. It is wrong. Why doesn’t it matter that the output is plainly incorrect? Where does the disconnection between the reality and the words come into the picture?

I made a new logo for the site, by hand, in Inkscape. I put it out there for the community to look at. This guy uploads a few options that look really professional. Frankly, better than mine. I think "wow, I didn't know we had a graphic designer in our community." I should have known better.

He just used AI. And so when I go back to him and ask things like "hey, can you send the source file for that?" and "do you have it in SVG?" he doesn't even know what I mean. The PNG he posted (that the users liked) was the sum total of all he had. No high res version, no vector version. No ability to move things around. or anything. Just this one, final result PNG.

One thing that bothers me is that I will come across as a jerk if I push back, saying that I'm not going to do all the work required to bring his low-effort design to reality. His, for example, was on a white background. I need transparent to go with a dark theme or a light theme. I need SVG or some kind of high res source so I can make multiple versions for different purposes (icon, web logo, horizontal positions, vertical positions, etc.)

People suddenly feel qualified to do things in domains where they know nothing at all. And this guy thinks he's *done* something. If I tell him he hasn't he will point to the logo right there on the screen as evidence that he has.

I run an online forum and I'm about to relaunch it on Discourse. One of my users tried out the new Discourse interface and thought it was OK, but not great.

He sends me a message saying it could be better, and what do I think of this? It's just a fantasy layout he made with AI. He has no idea how any of this works, he's just making pictures. The layout he's sent can't be done. And even getting close would take weeks of programming and making a custom theme in EmberJS.

I tried to make the analogy of going to a car dealership with a picture of a car that you made in AI. All the dealer can do is offer you the car on the lot that comes closest to your picture.

If I put my multimeter on resistance (that’s what I have done, isn’t it?) and I touch the 2 probes together, I expect to see basically 0 resistance. But I see 12.59. Then I touch the probes to the 2 terminals of my thermistor. I get basically the same reading. That makes no sense to me.

I mean, I think the thermistor has gone bad, but I also don’t understand whether I’m doing this right. Is this actually a common failure mode for thermistors or am I doing something dumb with my multimeter?

The open source maintainer who was the target of an AI’s rant saw this in an Ars Technica piece about the incident. Because his blog blocked AI agents, AI authors couldn’t read the site to actually see what he said. No worries, the AI Ars author just made up quotes and said they were in the blog post. This AI agent might have done the same. As long as it feels newsy it must be news, right?

What he said was that as much as 30% of code was generated by “software.” You could have generated header files or JSON configs in a repo and meet his definition. It’s just that all the headline writers and journalists WANT to say it was written by AI and Microsoft has no interest in correcting them.

I don’t know much about Windows coding, but I get the impression that there are a LOT of machine-generated code files. And let’s notice the “probably” that is doing some heavy lifting in that sentence.

It’s a travesty of a headline because “it just works” is not the topic of the article. How this LLM “works” any better than any other LLM is not discussed. Like Signal, it’s e2e encrypted. It’s private. But the privacy violations aren’t the reason LLMs do or don’t “work.” The privacy violations are by-the-by. Taking them away doesn’t mean the LLM’s results or performance will change.

Ok #homeautomation friends. I have a new wood burning fireplace. One of its features is a thermocouple thermometer in the catalytic converter. I’m supposed to use that temperature to help know when to engage the damper.

It has hard-wired leads that plug into the bottom of this device (that came with the stove). Fitting a new/additional thermometer to the fireplace is not realistic (I don’t think). But is there a device that can take these leads and can read the temperature? I want to add something to #homeassistant so I don’t have to look at the device and so I don’t have to keep replacing batteries in it.

I could hook up an ESP32 or similar with something going to a GPIO or whatever. But I don’t know where to start.

Any thoughts? Feel free to boost.

Like any normal #homeautomation enthusiast I just happened to have an ESP32 and a 4 amp 5V power supply laying around. So I bought a couple more strands of WS2811 lights, flashed #WLED on it,and poof! second holiday tree is lit.

Here’s a hot tip from a pro like me to any of you amateurs out there. These ESP32s perform much better when you plug the +5V wire into the 5V pin and the ground into the GND pin. If you put the ground wire on one of the communication pins, they don’t work as well. 😛 Don’t get discouraged. One day you’ll be as smart as me.

Now to add it to #homeassistant …

I just learned how to do some uBlock origin cosmetic selectors to remove elements on the page that invite me to use AI or take up screen real estate offering pointless AI summaries.

So many web sites use auto-generated CSS class names that you can't match on the actual classes. And you can't be sure that it will actually be 3 <div>s from the root or anything like that.

What I really like is the :upward() selector. I can basically match something like <h3>Try our assistant</h3> and then append :upward(3) to tell uBlock that regardless of what their names are, block the entire div 3 levels up because I found the matching text down here.

One of the things I'm hiding is a graphical button, so I use its aria-label to match it.

I was reading about [humans exposed to the vacuum of space](https://www.livescience.com/human-body-no-spacesuit ) and one of the interesting issues is that there's no matter to conduct heat to. You have to dissipate heat by radiating and that's hard.

So their conjuring of ideas like "data centers in space" is just more magical thinking like the LLMs themselves.

Microsoft tried the far more practical [underwater data center](https://news.microsoft.com/source/features/sustainability/project-natick-underwater-datacenter/ ), but we don't see more of that.

It’s not just the toxic owner. They have no commitment to moderating well. They have shown time and time again that they will change policy to benefit powerful right wing nuts or the wealthy. They have favoured majority over marginalised folks time and time again.

There are ample people still on X. If it changes hands AND they made a commitment to good moderation AND I saw some sustained track record with the users they already have, maybe I would go back.

They didn’t lose my trust over one person in one moment. They made a long series of decisions as a company over the course of years. That is what lost my trust. Getting rid of the worst person there would definitely help, but it’s not enough.

Most people who have done credible studies have discovered middling results. No massive improvement in efficiency, no massive loss, either. Just meh. We are using catastrophic amounts of resources to have a meh impact on code quality and speed.

The _belief_ that AI makes us more efficient is the goal. It softens the labour market by denigrating the value of skilled developers. A lot of skill assessment is judgement and opinion anyway. So, by using the belief in AI’s value to lower the value of programmers, they can both fire some and negotiate lower salaries on the ones they hire. That is AI’s goal: capital wants the same labour, just cheaper. AI is an ideological project, not a technological project.

Nobody is seeing more things accomplished with the same number of people. That is not what any AI-focused business is doing. They are trying to do the same as always, but with fewer people. Nobody says “thanks to AI, my people achieve so much more!” Instead they say “thanks to AI, we do what we do with fewer people.”

The vibe of the thing and its impact on labour markets is what seems to matter, not actual results.
