My theory is that many people do not understand the true productive potential of their land because many extremely productive plants have been crowded out over the years and through no fault of their own, they simply have not seen these plants growing on their land. The only way to really see the variety of plants which existed is to strip graze a piece of your land and then let it sit for an entire year. Obviously, you cannot do this with a large piece of land, but you can certainly do it with a small plot and then just let it grow back with whatever happens to grow. One of the incredible plants you will see grow back will probably be Pigweed. You have probably seen this growing in your working pens. It can grow 5-7 feet tall in a low rainfall environment (15 inches per year type of climate) and much taller (10-12 feet high) if you live in an area with 30-40 inches of rainfall. Many people will say that Pigweed is toxic to cattle and other livestock but this simply is not true. It might be toxic if it is the only thing your cattle eat, but in a pasture with a variety of weeds and grasses, cattle will eat a wide variety of available plants and won&#39;t get a toxic dose of any one plant. Plants such as Pigweed which some people consider to be Weeds have the particular advantage of being able to grow with very little water. They produce an abundant amount of &#34;plant matter&#34; which as any person with cattle knows is extremely important as cattle consume 20-30 lbs per day of food. When you start to see the incredible variety of plants that will grow on your land in addition to the grasses, you will understand that the land has much more productive potential than you might have imagined.
